Location: Siena, Siena Province, Tuscany, Italy, Europe (Florence and Arezzo 70 Km Distance, Pisa 140 Km)
Accommodations: House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)
Keywords: House
Built into a slope in a sheltered spot, nestling into the hillside, the house faces towards the hilly farmland at the rear. The garden and pool area command views the towers of Siena on its hilltop in the distance. Departing from the road behind the villa, a regular bus service connects in ten minutes to the centre of Siena, only four kilometres away.
Our property is composed of 4 apartments.
Opposite the entrance to each apartment else is parking for the car.
This villa is situated in the area of Colle di Malamerenda, in the Val d’Arbia, which stretches along a ridge, either side of a main road leading to Siena. The house has a little garden area in front of the entrance door, enclosed by low-level laurel, olive and Cypress trees. From here you step directly into the living-room, with large table and twin sofabed.
Fully equipped, fitted kitchen unit extends across one side-wall. Issuing off this area are a double bedroom and a large tiled bathroom with shower, including an ante-room which accommodates just a handbasin.
- In the apartment there are the dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, oven ,stove top burners.
In the apartment there are WIRELESS INTERNET FREE
THE GARDEN AND SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT: The property can be approached from the main road through either of two separate sets of automatic gates: one at the top, leading to the upper part of the driveway and its informal parking area; one at the bottom, leading to the lower half of the driveway and its own parking area.
Tall Cypress and pine trees screen the fenced-in grounds from the road, while an olive grove extends to one side of the house. Colourful rosebushes and petunias in big terracotta pots decorate the garden. This is the ideal spot for al fresco relaxation and dining, especially as the BBQ and pizza-oven are just alongside!
HISTORY: According to historical records, the village takes its name from a particular episode in the long-standing feud between two powerful Siennese families: the Tolomei and the Salimbeni. In the year 1331, during a meal at the local inn, eighteen relatives from the Tolomei family were brutally slaughtered in an act of revenge by members of the Salimbeni family. So it was that the inauspicious ‘merenda’ (light meal) really did finish ‘male’ (badly)!
LOCATION: WE are strategically placed within easy reach, both by car or public transport, not only of Siena, but also of many other celebrated Tuscan towns, such as Montalcino, Pienza and San Gimignano.
Town buses into Siena run every 30 minutes on weekdays, hourly on Saturdays, with a coach connection on Sundays. The journey time is 10 minutes and the bus-stop is situated only 50 metres from the villa. So this is a particularly excellent location for those wishing to explore the major sights and the wealth of cultural heritage of Tuscany’s historic towns.
OTHER FACILITIES AVAILABLE NEAR BY: Near by you can also find: horse riding, bike riding, hiking, wine tasting, fabulous dining, thermal spas, Hot air balloon flying, designer out let shopping, Etruscan ruins and Renaissance and medieval art and architecture.
Siena, the territory: The territory around Siena offers a wide variety of itineraries that allow you to discover the natural wonders of the landscape, medieval villages in perfect condition, archaeological sites, and cities of art like Siena, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Pienza.
An attractive circular gazebo in wooden latticework with ‘tufo’ stone flooring stands nearby. This is the ideal spot for "al fresco" relaxation and dining, especially as the BBQ and pizza-oven are just alongside apartments.
Siena Il Palio: Without the shadow of a doubt we can declare Il Palio delle Contrade to be the most famous, beautiful and deeply felt amongst all Italian, popular events. It brings together and enhances the characteristics of an event that is religious and civilian at the same time. It is a fascinating display that brings to light historical and cultural meaning that culminates in an unrestrained horse race in which the pride and the passionate competitive spirit of the Contrade comes to life.

Our three weeks at Villa Malamerenda were FANTASTIC! Located in a beautiful country setting on the edge of Siena, we found it easy to go out from there to see everything we wanted to see, and we saw a lot. The Tuscan Hill Towns, Florence, Assissi, Pisa and all of Tuscany are an easy drive from the villa. Most of all we enjoyed getting to know our truly gracious hosts! We had special moments at Villa Malamerenda. The highlight of these was the cooking class provided by our hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed the cooking tips, participating in the food preparation and the wonderful Tuscan meal we ate. Truly a special occasion! We have so many wonderful memories of our time in Tuscany and Villa Malamerenda. They will last a lifetime.

We enjoyed our stay at Villa Malamerenda in Tuscany. This is a good central point to visit many of the lovely Tuscany towns nearby, especially Siena, Montepulciano, and San Gimignano with its majestic towers. The appartment was comfortable although the bathroom was definitely smaller than the picture indicates. I suspect we were given the smallest of the 4 appartments as none of the pictures represent our unit. But it was adequate. I agree that having a washing machine when you are travelling several weeks is a big plus. In our unit there was limited supplies: We had to ask for dish soap and dishwasher tablets. The other issue for us was that we did not speak Italian; with the help of a dictionary, we finally understood some of the directions/informations. Elisa and her husband were extremely pleasant but communication was difficult as they do not really speak English or French. But we are in Italy! so we managed. While there is a bus stop nearby, the bus runs only every hour (every 2 hours on Sunday) so one really has to have a car to enjoy the area to its fullest. And there is easy/secure parking on the premises. If you do not feel like cooking, the Pizzeria at 1.6 km down the road is excellent. The menu is varied enough that you can eat there more than once with plenty of excellent choices. Grazie mille Elisa.

We just returned from spending about 3 weeks in one of the apartments. Very beautiful property that is well maintained. The washing machine was an added bonus. The Scarpone family was very welcoming and were of great help when our luggage failed to arrive at the airport. While the bus stops just in front, if you'd like to get around the area at all, a car is a must. Would certainly recommend to friends.

We stayed at four different locations in Italy and this villa was, by far, was the most comfortable. The location provides the serenity of the country while allowing nearby access to Siena. In fact, if you're tired of driving, there is a good pizzeria less than one kilometer down the road. The couple in the next apartment used the grill by the pool about every night. Except for one evening, we ventured into Siena for dinner. I would recommend that you stay here somewhere around the middle of your trip as there is a washing machine in your apartment. The WiFi was not expected and took the data roaming load off my iphone. The most memorable aspect of the stay, however, was the graciousness of our hosts. They joined us with wine, cheese and bread, and later with pasta prepared with tomatoes, basil and garlic from their property. Book it with confidence.

Finally a place that 'exceeds all expectations.' We arrived in Siena in September 2010. The pictures do not do justice to the charm of this property. The apartment suite was extremely clean, spacious, and comfortable. The kitchen was very well-appointed. We cooked there every evening. We were especially pleased to have access to a washing machine. Given this was mid-trip, being able to do laundry was a god-send. And the swimming pool was a bonus. After a long day of sightseeing, we loved to come home to a brisk swim in the pool. The location is ideal. It is centrally located and easy to travel to some extraordinary sites. We took day trips to Siena, Florence, Montepulciano, Chianti Region, and San Gimignano. What really made this property special, however, were our hostesses, Elisa and Marta. From the moment we arrived, they attended to our every need (including providing fresh tomatoes and garlic for our pasta creations). In spite of some language barriers, they managed to provide us with answers to all of our questions: Where do we get the bus to get back home? What's the best way to get to Florence (not by car!!) Where should we have breakfast in Siena? And, before we rented our car, Elisa even kindly offered to drop us off to get groceries (going well above and beyond what one would expect from a rental). We were so honoured to be invited for a traditional dinner to their home midway through our stay. We were joined by two of Elisa's friends, Rita and Marinella, from Florence. It was the most delightful evening of our stay in Italy. Elisa served a traditional Italian meal with anti-pasto, two kinds of pasta, pizza, and wine. When you plan a trip, you hope that you might have some authentic experience of the culture and people. In our visit to Malamerenda, we had just that. And we hope that we will continue to be in touch with our extraordinary friends. When we think of Italy, we will always think of them.

We stayed at this wonderful home mid June 2010 and could not have been more pleased! The apartment was clean and fully stocked. The view from every window was beautiful. The gazebo is a wonderful spot to relax. The pool looked great...a little too rainy for us to fully enjoy. The owners are fantastic! Full of great information and suggestions....thanks to the translating ability of their wonderful daughter Marta! They invited us to a wonderful homemade meal under the gazebo with pizza straight from the outside oven. The apartment itself is just a short ride from Sienna and about an hour from Florence. We would absolutely come back again!

We (me, my spouse, and 2 daughters aged 21 and 19) enjoyed the most memorable stay of our 2-1/2 week European vacation at Villa Malamerenda. We spent 4 nights there, using it as a base for some great day trips in the Tuscany region, including Montalcino, Pienza, Volterra, and, of course, Siena. Elisa was an incredible hostess throughout our stay! She invited us to share wine with her and a few of her friends the day we arrived, during which we received great advice for local places to visit, local restaurants, and advice for attending the famous Palio event in Siena, which we went to on our last day there. Additionally, she treated us to a home cooked pizza dinner (including salad and wine) with some other friends of hers on another evening, and she even acted as our "taxi driver" into Siena on the day of the Palio so we wouldn't have to fight the crowds. The accommodations were very comfortable and clean and the pool was quite nice. The location is convenient for visiting Siena itself, but it is about 10 minutes from town. Bus service into Siena is very convenient from Villa Malamerenda, but the buses don't run too late into the night. Like many others, I believe the Tuscany region is best visited when you have a car, so the location was no issue at all for us. We left feeling we not only liked our accommodations, but had experienced terrific hospitality and gained a friend. This type of experience is SO much nicer than simply staying in a hotel! I would certainly stay here again if I'm ever in the area!

Staying at the villa Malamerenda was a wonderful experience! I just spent two weeks traveling through Italy with my family and my brother and I decided to stay in Sienna for an additional week. We quickly found Villa Malamerenda on the VRBO website due to the availability feature. The photos of the pool sealed the deal and the price was right. The entire transaction occurred online with ease. Upon arrival, we found a charming and very clean apartment in a beautiful setting. The pool was alluring, the perfect temperature and very clean! We were please to meet the wonderful owners who invited us to a fabulous homemade Italian pizza dinner cooked in the outdoor oven, under the stars, with fabulous wine and conversation! Good food and new friends....it was the best night of our trip! I would highly recommend this property!

We initially chose Villa Malamerenda for its ideal location to travel throughout the Toscana/Umbria regions and found most generous and delightful hosts that made our trip all the more memorable. Elisa, her husband, and daughter were quite thoughtful in providing us with guidance and a few special bottles of wine. Making fresh pizza with them and their friends in their outdoor brick oven by the pool was a great time. The location is convenient enough to be able to drive to Siena in ten minutes (parked). Close to both north/south and east/west higher speed roads makes travel quite convenient to the Chianti area or Florence, Lucca and Pisa, or in other directions to the "Brunello" towns, or to Assisi, Cortona, Arezzo, and Urbino --with the caveat that there is no convenient route to Urbino! Special mention of the Sienese restaurant La Taverna di San Giuseppe. It is in a different league from the often-mentioned restaurants in the regions, and is quite reasonably priced considering how distinguished the cooking.
