Volcano Gem

Guest: Cathy (Chapel Hill, NC)
Date of Stay: 05/01/12 Review Submitted: 05/10/12

Home was well stocked and comfortable. All amenities you could want including wi-fi, fireplace, cable television. Close proximity to the Volcanoes National Park and Hilo. The owner even offered us a late check out since no one was checking in the day we left! This is more roomy, private and less expensive for the space than a hotel. We will rent again when we are in the area.

A Fantastic Home

Guest: Fiona and Rob (Calgary, Alberta)
Date of Stay: 04/07/12 Review Submitted: 04/28/12

This is an amazing property which we would highly recommend to anyone. The pictures, although accurate, don't begin to capture the tranquility and beauty of the home and its surroundings. The home truely is a home away from home as every detail was looked after from a back up propane tank for the bbq, slippers at the front door, a well stocked supply of wood for the wood burning fireplace, supplies for laundry and additional wine available should you run out. Liz and Mike, the wonderfully helpful owners, provided books, maps and information of the area which we found very helpful when planning our days. A short drive away is the magnificent volcano national park, volcano winery, and lava tubes to discover. We found black sand beaches, saw sea turtles, hiked along incredible shorelines, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay on the Big Island.

Excellent home in Volcano

I was very impressed with the owners attention to detail. The home was very nice and felt like new. I would highly recommend this vacation home to anyone. The owners were extremely nice and helpful. I have stayed in a lot of vacation homes but I would give this one an A plus rating. I personally live in Hawaii and have traveled many times to the Volcano area but I have to say this was my favorite stay and accomodations out of them all.

This wonderful home is the perfect place to explore this side of the island from. You can explore the Volcanoes National Park in the morning and then come home for lunch and be off for more exploring in the afternoon. The home is very comfortable and has everything you need - it feels like you are getting away from it all, yet just a short drive from all the sights. We would highly recommend staying here!! Mahalo

Beautiful retreat

Guest: Teri & Dennis (Happy Valley, OR)
Date of Stay: 01/27/12 Review Submitted: 02/04/12

We stayed two nights in the middle of our 10 day vacation in Waikoloa and we are so glad we chose "Stay Ohia". We had been to the volcano many years ago during our 'Big Island in a day' trip and vowed we would return for longer stay so we could enjoy all the activities and sites we missed due to time constraints. We arrived a little early and were greeted by Mike and a warm fire. He graciously showed us around the house and pointed out the various amenities such as the lanai, the robes and slippers they provided, heaters in case the house got cold etc... We really appreciated the cleanliness and the luxurious bedding in the master. Not to mention all of the little touches souch as muffins, bagels, tea and coffee, chocolates, blankets and gas heater on the lanai, instructions on how to use the electronic equipment and so much more. We felt very comfortable and enjoyed our stay completely. We especially enjoyed going up to the Jagger Museum lookout both nights to view the glowing red Halema`uma`u Crater floor. Thanks for the jackets Liz, they came in handy! Dinner at the KilAuea Lodge was good but expensive so we ate at Thai Thai the next night and had excellent meals. We will definitely recommend Stay Ohia to friends and family traveling to this destination. Aloha!

Charming and comfortable

Guest: Divabooks (Santa Fe, NM)
Date of Stay: 01/26/12 Review Submitted: 01/28/12

Lovely, charming, comfortable cabin minutes from the Volcano Park and about a half hour from Hilo. It's a "cabin" in the sense that it's made of wood, but this is a very high end cabin, with beautiful red wood floors, high ceilings, a lovely back porch with a heater (like the kind you see on the outdoor patios of restaurants) big screen tv and all the amenities. We rented it on very short notice through the recommendation of a friend and the owner was very accommodating. Would recommend it to anyone and would stay there again.

Wonderful Stay in Volcano

Guest: Kerry (Boulder, CO)
Date of Stay: 01/05/12 Review Submitted: 01/15/12

We had a wonderful stay! Your home was the perfect mid-vacation stop for us. We tend to go-go-go on vacations. And though we spent plenty of time in Volcano's Nat'l Park, there are limited activities in the immediate area helping us to just relax, take our time and enjoy the surroundings as well as the park. Your home was so, so very comfortable... and quite beautiful. We ate meals in, wrote our postcards and mailed them in town, played cards, watched a movie, did laundry and were thrilled with how close we were to the park entrance as well as the grocery store. We also appreciated the recycling (as we hate to throw anything away). The beds are very, very comfortable so it's amazing we even made it out of bed each day! The fireplace is the coziest kind of heat and we warmed up every morning with it. Our favorite park activities were the lava tube, hiking down into and across Kilauea Iki crater and watching the steam and glow of the big Kilauea crater at dusk. Thanks for the great accommodations. We aren't able to get to the islands but every several years, though would love to stay again sometime. And will recommend your home to any friends and family who may be heading that way.

Perfect

Location, location, location… this “STAY OHIA” house in Volcano is a comfortable, clean, modern home conveniently located 3 miles from the National Park and 2 miles from the Kazumura Lava Tube caves. We (family of four) spent 3 nights here after four nights in Kona (we had a great snorkeling trip on the FairWind). It was a scenic drive over on Route 19, with a stop in Hilo for groceries. The listing was accurate and with a complete kitchen and grill we thankfully had all our meals at the house (except for one dinner at “Thai Thai”). We were at the volcano early am and came back to the house for lunch to eat and relax (plenty of space for a family of four), and then repeated to go back to see the Crater a glow after dinner. The 2 hour Kazumura lava cave tour was amazing and again so close to the house. The FREE Hilo bus to Kona is also amazing. My husband and son were invited to fish in Kona and took the bus back from Hilo while my daughter and I spent the 3rd day in Volcano. This home and location worked out well for the whole family. We hope to return to “STAY OHIA”, it’s a gem and it made our first trip to Hawaii a memorable experience. I have already sent the link to friends. Thank you to the owners for all their help.

Cozy Cabin with Issues....

Guest: LA & AK (Arcata CA)
Date of Stay: 11/23/11 Review Submitted: 01/02/12

The first Impression as opening the front door is a wall of mold smell, overwhelming, and so much so, we cut our three nights down to two. Also, the owne'rs personal belongings are all over the house, so one feels as though one is a houseguest rather than staying at a true vacation property. A few personal touches are fine, however the owners shoes, notes and personal effects are found throughout the cabin. Other than the smell and the personal items, the place is fairly comfortable and pleasant.Unfortunateloy, the dank mold smell is the overriding impression we're left with.

Owner response:For the first time in two years of ownership there was an issue of mildew back in Nov 2011, due to an unusually rainy month. It came to our attention when we went out there to put up the Christmas decorations and found out others in the neighborhood had similar issues. After that, we did everything to fix the problem and see it does not happen again. We had 5 star comments right after that and continue to do so. We have robes, slippers, and backpacks for our guests use. Notes are there to be helpful for information. There are pamphlets with tourist information on the local area activities and restaurants. We have a clutter free vacation rental and only supply items that we think will be useful to our traveling guests. Our constant goal is to provide a clean and pleasant place for our guests to enjoy. We appreciate everyone’s feedback and do our best to keep suggestions and comments in mind when making changes for the better. We would appreciate a timely response if serious problems arise so they can be addressed as soon as possible.

This home is very convenient to Volcanoes Nat'l Park. It's decorated very well, and immaculately clean. But it's a little scary to have such beautiful wooden floors (no shoes, please!) and black granite counters that you look at sideways and they smudge! A brief smell of mildew each time you enter the house. The house would benefit from a local area map and a listing of nearby restaurants. That said, the owner was very responsive before and during the rental.

We started a 12 day stay on the Big Island at this Volcano Bungalow! The pictures are right on. It is a home away from home and we were glad we stayed 3 nights. Lots to do around the area and the accomodations were remarkable. We would have stayed a week if we knew ahead of time how lovely it would be! SO FUN. Liz - thanks for all the little extra's! The house was so clean and comfortable! If we ever get back to the Island we will stay again!

Date of Stay: 09/20/11 Review Submitted: 10/27/11

Stay Ohia is an amazing retreat, away from busy, touristy Kona, and a nice reprieve from the heat everywhere else on the Island. Liz provided good information to help us get there and get set up. The location was perfect for us, as we wanted to see the glowing crater at Volcano National Park but we didn't want to face a long drive in the dark--Stay Ohia was nice and close to the park gate. Add the amazing decor and little touches (all the notes from Liz explaining where things are, pens and notepads, and the extra blankets) as well as the beautiful back deck, and it was like coming home after a long day. The cabin was maintained better than the other condos we stayed at, and it was sad to leave it at the end of our stay. I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Big Island, and I will definitely be staying here on my next trip to Hawaii.

What a terrific stay we experienced at this nice, secluded house in the Volcano area. The owners have thought of everything - a full kitchen with supplies, two nice size bedroooms, a living area to stretch out and relax in, a front porch and a back deck - there's also complimentary wifi and a washer/dryer (which helps tremendously if you pack light). We really enjoyed the location - close to Hilo, the Kapho tide pools, Volcano National Park, and even Black Sand Beach. The house is in a peacful, quiet area - we slept soundly both nights we were there - and, it's so easy to reserve this space - the owners even sent us reminder emails about our stay. We will definitely be back to stay longer!

The ‘Stay Ohia’ Volcano Vacation Rental is … Awesome … Beautiful … Cozy … Decorative … Enjoyable … Fantastic … Great … Homely … Incredible … Joyous … Keen … Lovely … Magnificent … Nifty … Original … Perfect … Quiet … Relaxing … Superb … Terrific … Unbelievable … Vacation-like … Wonderful … Xanadu … Yummies … Zesty. We stayed (sadly) for just one night at Stay Ohia. Although we were based on the Kona side this trip, we almost hated to go back to our condo after spending the night here. This cottage is direct from a magazine or HGTV show. Liz and Mike have thought of everything, right down to the fuzzy blanket over the arm of the couch on the back deck. The finishes and furnishings are spot on, and it couldn't have been easier to rent from the owners or access the cottage. Many mahalos for sharing!

Beautiful "Wood Cabin"

Guest: Oklahoma Traveler (Norman, Oklahoma)
Date of Stay: 08/27/10 Review Submitted: 09/11/10

This was a perfect house to rent for exploring the volcano side of the island. Just 5 minutes to the volcano and about 25 minutes to Hilo. The house itself is made of gorgeous wood and is decorated beautifully with a modern look. I took pictures hoping to decorate my own house that way! It is stocked with everything you would need for cooking. The owners thoughtfully placed coffee, tea, and muffins for breakfast. They also have all the essentials for hiking and exploring the volcano including backpacks, flashlights and ponchos. They had all the wood and starters for a fire, which was perfect after being out all day and feeling the crisp night air. We fell asleep on the couch relaxing by the fire!! The owner was prompt in responding to my inquiry and was very helpful in finding out specifics and planning my trip. We went on a helicopter ride around the volcano with Safari tours which was amazing. We actually saw the red, boiling lava and the very end of the volcano spitting out into the ocean. We highly recommend! We also loved hiking the volcano national park and would recommend driving the Chain of Craters road to see the sea arch. You must eat at the Kilauea Lodge---the staff is friendly, the food and wine selection fabulous!! I recommend this house highly!

The pictures online are wonderful, but do not capture the serenity of the location and how immaculate the place is kept. The owner is very organized, accomodating and responsive - we had zero issues getting in the house and she was helpful with questions we had while staying here. Additionally, it is very close to Volcano National Park (less that 2 miles) and is an easy drive to Hilo and other places you want to be. When staying here, make sure to carve a night out for dinner at 'Thai Thai' - an authentic Thai restaurant in Volcano Village. Possibly the best Thai food I have ever had...The experience of staying here has made our trip just that much better.

My husband and I have stayed in a number of VRBO homes, and this was the nicest yet. The place is lovely, spotless, comfortable, and convenient to the national park. The front porch is great for sitting with coffee or wine, listening to all the birds. Inside, we enjoyed the open floor plan, stereo (with a turntable!), HDTV, wood stove, and comfortable seating. The master bed was nice, and the bathroom was lovely. The kitchen had everything we needed, ( even wine to buy) and was again clean - important in any rental! Volcano National Park is well worth a whole day and we went at night also to see the pink "glow" from the caldera. Awesome and again convenient to the house. We spent another day in and around Hilo. We enjoyed the Tsunami Museum, the Botanical Gardens, and Hilo Coffee Mill. We stayed 3 nights, and could have stayed more. We highly recommend Stay Ohia.

This attractive and comfy cabin in a quiet residential area was perfect for our two days in Volcano Village. It was nicely furnished, clean as a whistle, well equipped and thoughtfully provisioned with breakfast items and toiletries. Lots of helpful little explanatory notes made working everything a breeze, and when we had a little initial trouble working the entry keypad on arrival, Liz sent assistance within 5 minutes. Though there were only the two of us, it would be an equally great choice for a family of four. We're recommending it to friends. Mahalo, Liz!

Date of Stay: 02/11/10 Review Submitted: 03/28/10

My wife and I were overwhelmed by this beautiful, clean, and spacious house. Liz thought of everything, with little note stickers where needed, and invited us to raid her candy supply and freezer in case we forgot to bring our own supplies. The house easily sleeps 4 adults in the queen and double beds. Heating/temperature: Although it gets quite hot in the sun at daytime, the mornings, evenings and nights are very cold in Volcano (Liz warned us), so bring long trousers, long sleaved sweaters, long pyjamas, thick socks (Liz provides spa slippers because the floor can get cold too, shoes stay outside) and do light the fireplace - even if it looks so spotlessly clean. There are also 2 portable lightweight electric heaters, which we made extensive use of). Kitchen/Living room: Beautiful, like in the pictures. We can well imagine that it would be a great place just for relaxing inside the house, reading books, listening to music and watching DVDs. But as we only stayed for a few days and wanted to make the most of sightseeing and hiking, we only used basic coffeemaking, bread toasting, take-away eating (see below) and the dishwasher. Bath/Shower: Liz supplied a lot of beautiful spa shampoos and soaps. No shortage of towels as in some other places. Washer/dryer: No need to bring your own detergents or softeners -Liz supplies hers. WLAN worked beautifully. We would have found a telephone a nice touch, because we left our European mobile phone at home (no phone calls during the vacation). We would definitely recommend this place to friends and relatives. Our sightseeing tips when based in Volcano: Volcanoes National Park, esp. the hikes (ask the rangers, plan at least 2 days for the park), the lava entry point into the ocean (3/4h drive - ask the NPS rangers at the Park HQ whether the lava entry is active), Hilo (25 minutes drive), Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens (3/4 hour drive, plan at least 2h for the gardens, last entry is at 4pm, closing time 5pm). Our eating discoveries: In Volcano, the Lava Rock cafe serves excellent food (e.g. suberbly fresh grilled mahi sandwich with salad for around $8 or $10) for eating inside or as take-away; in Hilo we were disappointed by the main street eateries which we found near the shopping malls but delighted with the Imiloa Astronomy Center restaurant's food.

Owner response:Thank you for kind review. We are so glad you enjoyed yourselves. All your tips about the restaurants and places to see will be really helpful to future visitors. Mahalo, Liz and Mike

We had a lovely time. It's obvious that a Liz and Mike put a lot of care into making this a home away from home.

We were celebrating our anniversary and couldn't have chosen a more beautiful, peaceful place! The cabin is gorgeous, quiet and private, and only 3 miles to the Volcanoes Park entrance. Sitting out on the veranda, listening to the birds, lounging in front of the fire, it was all superb. Liz and Mike have done a fantastic job of creating a cozy, warm homey atmosphere. We will be back, and will be telling our friends!

Blown away by the beauty, comfort and privacy of this place. A perfect spot for exploring the volcano. Also the best value we've encountered in Hawaii. We did NOT want to leave & can't wait to return! Mahalo Liz & Mike!

Loved loved loved our time in your beautiful house! It was a very comfortable and convenient base for our explorations of the volcano area. It was so comfortable actually that it threatened to trap us, but we dragged ourselves out to see the sites. Thanks for having us and making our stay so enjoyable!

Outstanding deal. We have been coming to Volcano about twice a year for 18 years and this has been the best place we have stayed. You can't touch anything this nice without paying twice as much. Gorgeous wood and granite finishes, comfortable bed, cozy wood stove, classics CD and DVDs and well stocked kitchen. Loved it and will be back.

Thank you so much Liz and Mike for your hospitality. It was our first VRBO experience and it was wonderful. As others have said - it was your thoughtful and personal touches which make this an exceptional rental experience. We appreciated the comfort, quiet and the convenience to the volcano. Thanks also to Mike for setting us up for the cruise later on in our trip. We will certainly recommend your property to anyone heading to the south end of the island. Aloha and see you again.

We went over for a quick trip from HNL to visit the volcano. We arrived at the home and immediately felt right at home. The house was super clean and stocked with everything that we could possibly need. I only wish we needed to stay longer. From the linens to the treats in the freezer, our stay at this home was perfect. Thank you for making such a quick trip easy and enjoyable. I will definitely stay here again when I take a trip to the Big Island.

A big "Mahalo" to Liz and Mike! We enjoyed our stay in this beautiful cabin and Liz's little touches made us feel right at home. The cabin was fully equipped with anything we might possibly need during our stay (including torches to visit the Lava Viewing area at night!!). We only wish we had more time to spend in the Volcano area, so we could spend more time relaxing in the cabin! Thanks again, Adrienne and Dave Young.
