The town of Hawi is located in the historic and diverse northern part of the Big Island of Hawaii known as the district of North Kohala. It is a rural area rich in the history of old Hawaii. The birthplace of King Kamehameha I, North Kohala’s town of Hawi is the center of this previous sugar plantation community. A great get away from the crowds, traffic & fog of the southern Kona coast. The area is a mix of fine art galleries and restaurants with entertainment of famous musicians as well as casual eateries, ice cream/coffee shops and cafes where you can trade stories with the locals while reading the paper with Kona coffee and fresh baked goods. Things get a little busier for a week in October when the Kohala fair and the Iron Man bike Race come to town.

The magnificent Pololu Valley with its black sand beach is close by as well. It is a 30 minute drive to the white sand Resort beaches and world class golf courses of which Hapuna Beach and Mauna Kea Beach are in the top 10 in the world.
Within a few miles is the 8500 acre Kahua Ranch for horseback riding, wagon rides, and petting zoo as well as an evening of story telling, music, dancing, and BBQ at a working cattle ranch. Continuing along the mountain road brings you to the Paniolo (cowboy) town of Waimea/Kamuela, and it’s famous Parker Ranch (the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the country) as well as fine restaurants and shopping.
Beyond Waimea is the beautiful Hamakua Coast, with the rodeo in Honoka'a, the spectacular Waipio Valley, Akaka Falls, a coastal scenic drive with spectacular botanical gardens to Hilo Town, home of the famous Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, in April.
Upon your arrival to the house, our manager will meet you and give you all the information you may need for your stay. If you need specialized amenities and assistance with your stay ... that can be arranged as well.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2005
Anna was born and raised in Sweden and met Reed von Gal in California before they moved to Hilo in 1974 for her to attend nursing school. Since then they lived in Sweden and Vermont but are working on getting back to the Big Island and the best spot on the Island, Hawi. We purchased the 2 acre lot in Maliu Ridge subdivision in the year 2000 and collected building materials, furniture and art from the U.S. mainland, Canada, Mexico, Sweden and China. The construction of the timber frame started in 2005 and the house was completely finished in 2009. We split our time between Vermont and Hawaii and look forward to developing relationships with people who appreciate the beauty of our dream house and enjoy sharing it with us.
Why the Owner Chose Hawi
Having lived on the big island and visiting the other Islands we are convinced that this is the best spot in the state and because we split our time between Hawi and the mainland we are able to share our home with others to cover some of the expenses.
The Unique Benefits of this House
The house has an elegance yet is very cozy. It can accommodate a big family or 2 separate families traveling together - while not feeling crowded. Families can spend time together in the large living room, prepare meals in the spacious kitchen and eat/entertain in the grand lanai/courtyard or have more private time in individual kitchen/living room areas. The property is located in an upscale and safe non-gated community. There are horses grazing in the back yard and a multitude of activities within minutes.
