Maison De Village in Picturesque Les Salces in Languedoc

Les Salces is a picturesque village in Languedoc, one hour west of Montpellier. It is located close to the two charming market towns of Lodeve and Clermont l'Herault, in a beautiful region known for its outstanding wine and lovely scenery. It is close to a river and lake which afford excellent swimming, as well as the Mediterranean. Within close range are several wonderful walled towns and villages, including Carcasonne and la Couvertoirade. Also nearby is the spectacular viaduct near Millau, a feat of modern engineering in a striking setting.
The House:
This non-smoking house is a traditional “maison de village” with a wood stove in the fireplace and a lovely terrace overlooking the hills and valley surrounding the village. The house is comfortably arranged, with a good sized bedroom, and large “sejour” or living/dining/kitchen room, and another living/sleeping area upstairs, with a radio and television, sofa bed and easy chairs, as well as a single bed in a separate alcove. There is a bathroom with a shower and clothes washer. A good sized terrace with a BBQ and lounge chairs as well as a clothes line is upstairs off the living room.
The Region:
The charming Languedoc village of Les Salces, where Ian McEwan bought a home that inspired his novel “Black Dogs”, is conveniently located west of Montpellier, in a beautiful region becoming known for its wonderful and competitively-priced wine as well as for its diverse artistic community. Next door to our house a sculptor lives and works and there are several others in the adjacent villages, as well as a thriving group of potters 20 minutes away in St. Jean de Fos, a village with a rich clay bed. Local markets are fascinating and full of excellent local produce, without the crowd of tourists present in many other areas of France. The village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert is just a few kilometers away, and was declared a National Site in 1999. Several local swimming and hiking spots as well as the nearby Mediterranean beaches and towns make this destination one with limitless local attractions for those with an interest in the arts, outdoor activities, food and wine.

The house is full of character: both the character of a traditional French village house and the character of its owners and their friends and family, who have left a wonderful library of books, pictures and all the little touches that make a house welcoming and interesting. Everything was clean and tidy for our arrival and in good order. It's not a five-star hotel but what it lacks in luxury it more than makes up for in personality. The region is spectacular, with wonderful walks and landscapes, and the city charms of Montpellier not far away. Les Salces is a charming little village whose only drawback is a lack of cafe and epicerie. However, there are good restaurants only about 20 minutes away in Lodeve, Montpeyroux and La Vacquerie. Our stay has been sadly too short - if only we could stay longer!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thank you so much for a truly wonderful stay in Les Salces! We stayed for a week in April and could not have asked for a better experience. This extremely charming French house is located in a quaint village with some of the most stunning vistas around. We sent a picture taken from the kitchen window home and relatives thought it was a postcard! Beautiful hiking trails surround the village and we really enjoyed the 5 kilometer jog next to a stream through the vineyards to the neighboring town of St jean de la blaquiere. Built up a good appetite for the delicious local bread and olive oil. We also enjoyed day trips to Montpellier, which is one of the best cities in the South of France. As for the house, it was a pure delight. The woodburning stove added real charm and the terrace was perfect for lounging, reading, and getting a bit of sun. The house was spacious, clean, and stocked with a terrific library of books and guides. We highly recommend this house as the perfect getaway in the South of France!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Annie an I arrived at Les Salces for a short stay in October. We had a tremendous time. The village is completely unspoiled and authentic - no tourist trap. Set at the foot of a big escarpment so the local walking - straight from the front door - is lovely. The house itself is great - full of character, delightfully old fashioned but with broadband if you absolutely have to stay in touch. And a very secluded sun terrace which we both enjoyed! We had only a few days so spent time at the local market, swimming and cycling. All very enjoyable - the cycling especially is very good, if a little strenous. I'd recommend this property and location to anyone who wants to get away from it all and live for a spell in real, rural France.Owner response: So glad you enjoy the house as much as we do. The local markets, restaurants and vineyards are other great local attractions!

We stayed at this small, but charming little stone village house with our 2 teenage sons. We loved the beauty of the village and its history as the centre for sharpening stones (meules), and the surrounding countryside. We found fantastic walks, although our sons preferred swimming in the freshwater lakes at Salagou and St Jean de Fos, about 20/30 miins away, and canoeing down the stunning gorges of the River Herault. Clearly quite a few artists and sculptors are working locally, so the area has a definite arty feel. The house is basic but comfortable, and we found it very clean. When we went the weather was very hot and sunny, and we ate on the terasse at the top of the house most of the time: it was especially nice in the evenings sitting there with a glass of the local wine watching the swallows circling overhead in the sky! We'd recommend visiting the many good local wine caves to sample the different wines, which are exceptionally good value. We had a very nice meal at l'Auberge des Causses in La Vacquerie, and the drive up there is spectacular in itself. This area would be good if you're into hill cycling - we saw lots of lycra-clad cyclists. Make sure you visit the local markets, which are very colourful and much better for local food produce than many markets elsewhere in France. If you don't want to be there when the annual fete is on, involving loud music and drinking in the village place until the early hours, avoid the weekend near to 15 August (Feast of the Assumption), which is a public holiday in France. However, it didn't spoil our holiday, and we would certainly go again. A great place to relax and unwind. Graham Laylee - London, EnglandRecommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+.

The house is traditionally French, and matched the description given, with a spacious bathroom, and a well-stocked kitchen. The terrace is tiled and open, and a nice place to sit out on warm summer evenings. It is in a great location walking distance to wonderful hikes, and several beautiful swimming spots can be enjoyed nearby (Pont de Diable and Lac Salagou especially recommended). The small rural village is a great place to relax and escape hectic city life, though it is easy to get to more urban centres like Lodeve (which has a wonderful market), or Montpellier (many museums, galleries, concerts, etc), if desired. A wonderful place to visit!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/3

Small town France, far from the tourists. A tiny, quiet, charming village, with fantastic walks all around. Tons of stuff to visit right near by, fairy rocks, neolithic sacrificial stones, Dolmen, abbeys, canoe rides in the gorge, caves, vultures in the Larzac plateau. The house has absolutely everything you need, and has a really nice comfortable feel. The terrace is great for apperitif at sunset. We were with our two girls (7 and 10), and we all fell in love with the place.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+.

“Dear Beth, Just a brief note to say how much Kathy and I enjoyed our week at your place in Les Salces in June 2010. We found the description that you provided for the accommodation and the facilities to be accurate. Everything was clean and in good working order. Most of our time was spent walking and hiking in the immediate area … as well as reading or just hanging out on the rooftop patio. Les Salces is a very attractive quiet little village. We did take the time to visit Lodeve,Roquefort, Cirque de Navaceles, Millau …all interesting places. Also had a great day hiking around St Guilhem le Desert. All in all great week. Sincerely, Peter and Kathy Seybold Toronto, Canada”Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

About the owner: This house is a family property that has been loved and enjoyed for many decades. It is very well equipped with cooking equipment and linen, books and music.
Why the Owner Chose St.-Privat:
Les Salces is in a lovely but relatively un-touristy part of France, with fantastic wines, scenery, swimming opportunities and history. There are great hikes criss-crossing the area and it is close to the Mediterranean and to many lovely ancient towns like Carcasonne. The people and charming and there is lots to do and many fascinating places to explore.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our house is in the middle of an artistic community, which spans the area. A sculptor lives next door and several others work in surrounding villages. Close by is a group of potters and an artistic retreat is just up the hill. Another set of neighbours make their own outstanding wine and sell it locally. Others again harvest fruit and wild asparagus - delicious!
