Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1989
We are not the typical apartment rental business .We are a small family of academics and are opening our huge home to meet with the expenses, meet new international people and make friends. I am a principal of a school where we teach Italian language culture and cuisine and my husband is a journalist/ economist . Our daughter, 22 , is studying history of art at Siena's university . We have a lovely small dog and a cat .
Why the Owner Chose Sovicille
We bought the property 25 years ago with the dream to turn it back to its ancient splendor, keeping its atmosphere and respecting its ancient stones . We fell in love with the incredible site, the panorama, the quietness and its simple elegance. The villa is now composed of four apartments and we live permanently in one of them . It has been a great challenge that lasted a decade, and has given us huge satisfaction .
The Unique Benefits of this Country House / Chateau
Staying in our country villa will give you a taste of that world apart called "Tuscany" , the quietness with no city noises, the proximity to the many cities and villages that made Tuscany a dream under the sun . Siena, Florence, San Gimignano etc. We know many nice places and are always happy to give tips, ideas, itineraries and organize a special day for our guests.

Lovely and amazing - one of those memorable moments

My wife and I, and our daughter and son-in-law, wanted an apartment that the amenities we were accustomed to (as much as possible), a place with character and style, a good location to take daily trips and a place we could retreat to and find the comfort of a semi-rural location. Bareto (# 261106) had this and more. The "more" part was the owner (Sonia) and her husband (Pino). They were very helpful in organizing our daily adventures, talking about Italian cooking (since Sonia owns a cooking school), being sure we figured things out -- all those details the come up and can be a puzzlement. Plus, if you like hanging out and getting into interesting conversations about Italy and the world, both Sonia and Pino were good companions - whether at the pool, looking out across the valley to castle, or sharing some grappa. Having a car and a Garmin GPS device is helpful in going out to daily trips to other Tuscan cities. There are nearby walks, but there are many adventures to be had and a car is a necessity. There are nearby restaurants (with a car) like Astronave. Reasonbable and delicious. Shopping is more distant, but since we liked to cook in the evening and have a morning breakfast, we needed to go off to a Conad or a COOP for major food stuffs. Smaller produce places are also around, but we found the larger markets more helpful for our needs. Sonia gave us some veggies from her garden, up next to the clothes line where we could hang our clothing for a quick dry in the sun. We were there at the time of the July il Palio and so our time in Siena was a bit more momentous than what we planned. This was the kind of unanticipated event that needed an insider's explanation - which Sonia and Pino gladly shared (their English is great - especially since my Italian is non-existent). The photos understate how nice the place is. There should be panorama shots to show the breadth of how nice this place is. I would (and will be) recommending this villa to friends and family. And, of course, to you as well. Enjoy the good life!

We were a party of two couples who stayed at il Bareto Sept. 12-16. What a charming home they offer. It is a 1,000-year old farmhouse, furnished with antiques and what a setting! A lovely view of the "Prince's" castle as well as Siena in the distance. It is an ideal spot to use as a base for exploring the area and we took advantage of the opportunity to attend a cooking class one evening in Siena that Sonia arranged where she is the head chef. Pino was very helpful and gracious, attending to every need and giving suggestions for sightseeing. He also provided us with intricately drawn maps to reach our destinations. The gardener, John, laid a fire for us which was very welcome on the one really rainy day we experienced. He arranged for us to have dinner at the adjoining Agritourismo and one morning we awoke to about 300 sheep grazing in the meadow, complete with their shepherd who used a series of whistles and calls to control the herd. We had an enjoyable and unique experience.

Our family (2 adults, 3 kid) recently stayed for 6 nights at Il Bareto. It was indeed our "home away from home". Sonia and Pino are terrific hosts, recommending places to visit, local restaurants, and driving directions (which can be rather challenging in Toscana...). Our time in Toscana was the best that we had during our 2 week trip to Italy. We can't wait to return. The location of the house made for very accessible day trips to Florence, Siena, Montalcino (great wine), Chianti and other. The home is very cozy, and I agree that the photo's do not do justice. Look no further - contact Sonia and Pino and book now!!!

We are a family of 4 including 2 teenagers and had a very nice stay at Bareto. We received interesting and accurate informations from very sympathic hosts. We stayed 5 days but a wek would have been even better. From there, we visited Sienna, San Gimignano, Monteregioni, Chianti region and more. We ate only one evening in a nearby restaurant, Astronave, and we certainly recommend this unexpensive, good place to eat outside with a local atmosphere.

This villa is even nicer than the photos indicate. My family stayed in the two-bedroom apartment for a week and we had a wonderful experience. To have blackbirds singing all night and then wake up to the views of Tuscan hills and the Celsa Castle was incredible! The owners are very nice people and they offered lots of useful advice, from grocery store locations to tourist destinations. Although the house is near a bus route, you should have a car because this is a remote area. We took day trips to many sites, including Siena, Firenze, Monteriggioni, Pisa, and Lucca.
