Location: Durham, Connecticut, USA (Halfway between New York & Boston, New Haven & Yale nearby)
Accommodations: House, 5 Bedrooms + Den, 4 Baths (Sleeps 8-10)
The House... is a beautiful, 4000-square-foot, 1720s farmhouse with four enormous fireplaces (with two bread ovens), a wood-burning stove, and original wide-board floors and wood-panelling throughout. It is thoroughly updated with a huge master bedroom suite (with Italian glass-tiled shower), large family room with vaulted roof, two further formal living rooms, a beamed dining room, and recently renovated attic space (2003) comprising two enormous bedrooms/studies with high ceilings and wall-to-wall custom closets. The kitchen is fully-equipped and has hand-made, Mexican-tile counters and a sunny breakfast nook. A wireless high-speed modem and satellite TV bring the house into the 21st century. The house is furnished with antique furniture and is a charming, quiet, ideal place to rest and relax in a rocking chair or perhaps on a window seat or in a hammock overlooking the lush, mature gardens.
The Garden... is a stunning, carefully landscaped, two-acre lot with mature plantings (including fruit trees and several hundred-year-old maples). Wooded wetlands border the property. The yard also contains an antique milking-shed and picturesque, ivy-clad barn.
The Pool... is kidney-shaped and surrounded by a rustic patio, completely enclosed and invisible from the road. The pool area contains more mature plantings, with a pool-side steamer, bench, and deck chairs ready for your use.
The Town... is a small, historic, community -- founded 1699 -- filled with 18th- and 19th-century houses (the center of town and the Green is one of Connecticut's Historic Districts). The town's shops are in easy walking distance from the house.
