Location: Centro, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Central Mexico, Mexico (3-1/2 Hrs, Mexico City(MEX), 1-1/2 Hrs, Leon (BJX) Airport.) View Map
Accommodations: Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)
Keywords: Penthouse, casita, views, patios, roof terrace, vistas, house with town view
Located just a ten-minute walk to the Jardin (the town center), the Casa Las Palomas ("The Doves") has a bird's-eye view of San Miguel's church spires, house-studded hills to the East, tile roofs and leafy valley, masses of purple-flowering jacaranda trees, as well as a broad vista of the distant mountains of Guanajuato from the private roof terrace. You can also see houses of the up-scale Atascadero part of town further uphill, as well as the Los Picachos ("The Peaks") to the East.
Comfortable furnishings: This snug aerie (about 1000 sq.ft. plus 2 private patios and a private roof terrace) is perfect for a family of 4, or two couples. There are two bedrooms--each with king-size bed. The master bedroom in the main apartment is 18 feet long that looks out on the green hillside through three south-facing, arched windows. You can see the downtown Parroquia (the cathedral symbol of San Miguel) from the king bed... The second bedroom, across the entrance patio from the main apartment, has a sunroom facing south, and you can see trees and flowers in the back yard, as well as the trees and greenery of the hills and and a little bit of Los Picachos. Furnishings to the two bedrooms are casual, with "equipale" (rustic wood and leather chairs) covered in native fabrics, hand-woven cotton curtains, native hand-carved wooden bedsteads, original paintings, serigraphs and native handicrafts. The second bedroom has its own bathroom with hand-decorated tile shower and lavatory. The second bedroom comes complete with king-sized bed, clothes closet, a gas heater, as well as a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, and a modicum dishes and silverware in the sunroom.
The living/dining in the main area of the apartment has exposures on 3 sides with a view from the dining room table of the Parroquia Church nestled in the valley below. Couches (one of which is a double hide-a-bed) and chairs, plus a wall of closets behind custom-made wood doors, a gas heater, TV (cable TV with four English-speaking channels provided) and small stereo complete the furnishings. Orginal paintings adorn the walls and handicrafts ornaments and hand-woven textiles and pillows accent the furnishings.
The compact kitchen in the main apartment has tile counters, custom cabinetry, hand-painted dishes and hand-blown glasses, pots and pans, silverware, coffee maker, microwave, the toaster-oven and a refrigerator and stove; the master bath has a deep-soaking tub (with shower) surrounded by colorful tiled walls, and with punched-tin light fixtures and custom-made wood cabinetry. The second bathroom has a colorful tiled sink, 5-foot mirror and tiled shower enclosure.
Ample private terraces: An umbrella table and chairs provides al fresco dining in the entrance terrace between the main apartment and the second bedroom. Up a short flight of steps is the private roof-top terrace with amazing 360-degree views. This upper terrace is furnished with cocktail table and chairs. And there are dozens of plants, with a gardener to take care of them!
.
Services: Our trusted maid, Remedios, comes twice a week to clean up, and tend to the sheets and towels. She will do the guests' personal laundry in the owner's machine for 60 pesos (US $5.00) a load (as long as the guests furnish laundry soap), and ironing for US$5.00 an hour. The gardener comes 3 times a week to care for the potted plants. There is a private cell phone, a Vontage phone to provide free long-distance calls to US and Canada (200 minutes/month) as well as a wireless Internet for your laptop, a cable TV, and two small radio/CD players.
This apartment may be rented separately as one-bedroom, one-bath unit with living/dining room (with double hide-a-bed) and kitchen--formerly called Casita Los Colibris (see guests' comments and rate schedule below).
Terrific location: The Botanical Garden (great for an evening stroll beside the lake, an early morning jog on gravel paths, or bird-watching) is just a fifteen-minute walk away (entrance fee). The new mall, with a large supermarket, banks, a department store, specialty shops and restaurants (sushi, Chinese, Mexican, Italian coffee shop, even a MacDonalds!) is a 35-minute walk (take a taxi back for the equivalent of US $2.00). Academia Hispana, a Spanish-language school, is just a five-minute walk--at the head of Calle Mesones. The closest restaurant is La Puertecita at the hotel five minutes walk up (away from town) from the Arcos on Santo Domingo. The central Jardin, with restaurants, galleries, shops and museums is a 10- minute walk down (a 20-minute walk back up--excellent built-in aerobic exercise!). A small spa with lap swimming pool and exercise room is available a 5-minute walk towards town. They charge approximately US$80 a month/person, or $5.00 a day/person.
Option: The two apartments (check out the other at VRBO #1122) can be rented together, if they are available, to form a 3 bedroom, 3 bath place (with 2 living rooms and dining table for 6, and two and a half kitchens). This large apartment has a balcony, 2 patios and the roof-top terrace, and it sleeps up to 6 (or 8 if you count the hideabed). Check with the owner for availability and cost. Also check availability calendars on the two webpages.

Map & Owner's Profile
Penthouse, 2 Bedrooms,2 Baths, Views, 10-Min. Walk to Centro
Year Purchased: 1985
Why the Owner Chose Centro
We live downstairs... I first heard of San Miguel de Allende in 1955 when I sadly waved my boyfriend and one of my girl friends good-bye in the three-day bus trip from Albuquerque to San Miguel... My parents said I had to earn money that summer, but I swore I would go to San Miguel sometime... Only 29-1/2 years later, I achieved that goal--January 1, 1984!!
Owner's Map of Centro
I wish I was as "colorful" as this picture of Igor the Iguana that I took in Sayulita this past winter, but honestly my husband and I--David Hernandez and Judy Arnold--are a friendly Mexican-American couple who take pride in making our visitors feel at home in our two apartments: Casita Las Golondrinas (1 bedroom, 1 bath) and Casa Las Palmoas (2 bedrooms and 2 baths)... David is a San Miguel native, and we met here 27 years ago... We have one dog (Roja), one cat (Liso) who might visit you (if you leave the gate at the bottom on the stairs open) and one wolf-whistling parrot (Caco)... Remedios and Miguel Angel help us (and you, if you choose to stay wth us) in the house and gardens and 200 potted plants!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in San Miguel and at this property and will definitely return. The location is lovely and the casita is very charming. There are a couple of changes that I believe would make the property even more appealing. First, the shower head must go. It has a (demented) mind of its own and delivers water everywhere except on the bather. Second, the upper terrace could use some TLC such as new pads for the patio chairs and a few decorative items…maybe even a chaise or two. This is such an important part of the house that it warrants special attention. We loved the view especially at sunset and so spent a lot of time on the deck. Those are my only criticisms of an otherwise lovely apartment. The kitchen and bathroom are well provisioned and the bed is comfy. Also, the housekeeper Remedios is delightful and very helpful.
Owner response: I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself, Vicki, and it was a pleasure to have you here... And I appreciate your observations about the shower and the roof-top terrace... My husband bought a beautiful lounge with yellow cushions, and he and the gardener have already scaped the walls clean preparatory to painting them (when it stops raining!!), and replace one piece of tile that was missing.... We are going to move other plants and flowers up there, also... There are new cushions underneath the stairs to the roof... I also told my husband to replace the shower nozzle, to a more up-graded model! We will be very happy to welcome you back, when you come... Judy

5/5Guest: margaret and henry jaques(ottawa, ontario, canada) Date of Stay: 04/03/09 Review Submitted: 04/03/09 We spent March staying in the charming Casita Los Colibris. It offers every feature advertised, and more. For example, we enjoyed waking each morning to the sight of a jacaranda in full blossom outside the bedroom window and marvelling at spectacular sunsets with friends--and margaritas--on the roof patio. The landlady, Judy, is delightful and accommodating. A terrific complement to the wonderful attractions of San Miguel de Allende, itself. We look forward to our next visit and stay in Casita Los Colibris. Recommended for: Did you find this review helpful?13455Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
