Villa Chiara is a comfortable family summer home located just above the village of Ricco' del Golfo in Liguria. The villa is located on a 15 acre estate of vineyards, within easy walking distance to the village where there are local shops and restaurants. The village is a 15 minute drive from La Spezia and about a 30 minute drive into the Cinque Terre towns.
The Autostrada is a 10 minute drive from the villa, which makes it a convenient base for visiting towns like Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Portofino. Perched on the top of a hill the villa also offers wonderful views of the surrounding hillside and the village below. Guests will enjoy daily excursions to many wonderful places and coming home to their own relaxing villa for the evenings.
Villa Chiara dates to the early 1900's, and the there are many antique furnishings, paintings, and memorabilia. It has the authentic feel of an Italian country farmhouse yet it is just behind the hills and sea of the CinqueTerre. For expert hikers, some of the famous hiking trails of the CinqueTerre park start about a mile away from the villa and reach what is know as the High Path that leads down to the village of Vernazza. Otherwise, the CinqueTerre may be reached by car or by train from La Spezia.
On the villa's first floor is a comfortable living room with original ceiling frescoes from the early 1900's and a large fireplace. Adjacent is a generous dining room that is connected to the kitchen, newly remodeled in 2005, with a gas oven, dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator/freezer, microwave oven and American coffee maker. From the kitchen window is a lovely view of the garden and vineyards. Exiting the kitchen door is a lovely furnished patio area in the garden for al fresco dining.
All of the bedrooms are located on the second floor. They have all been tastefully and comfortably furnished. The master bedroom has a nice balcony with a view over the vineyards and the local village below. Three of the bedrooms have double beds and two of the bedrooms have twins. The two bathrooms are also located upstairs. One has a shower and the second has a tub with a handheld shower.
Villa Chiara is well located for touring Liguria and enjoying the Italian countryside. The owner is American so she can help you lots of local information. Cook and maid are also available. The villa also has wireless internet and has been well equipped for a comfortable stay in this beautiful area of Liguria.
For wine lovers, at Villa Chiara, the owners grow with great passion the local grapes to produce wines like Vermentino,Albarola and Barbera. Twice a year, there is a kind couple that stays in a separate apartment on premises to allow for the pruning of the vineyards. They are very discrete. Note that between the end of September and the beginning of October, it is harvesting time and Villa Chiara is actually a working vineyard. Guests who wish to participate and experience what harvesting is all about...are more than welcome.
We are sure that guests will enjoy Villa Chiara with it's authentic atmosphere and beautiful surroundings!

Dear Sarah, We have enjoyed getting to know this village and it's charming surroundings. The view from our dining table is extraordinary, especially in the mornings. Becoming acquainted with this historical villa has been quite intriguing. Thank you for the lovely flowers, wine and candy! We cannot thank you enough for the extensive notes that you left in the house book telling us about local attractions, best gelato, the stuffed mussels at Locanda Lorena, the train schedule, ferries, etc I do not think we would have found our way to San Terenzo&Lerici without your notes; we loved the sun filled day we spent there and would have missed it without your hints; I daresay these two villages are not highlighted in many guide books. We will treasure the memories we take away with us. We have taken loving care of this historic villa and so appreciate having been here.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We stayed in this villa for a week. The owner was very helpful in answering questions prior to our arrival and, since she was out of town when we arrived, her assistant was equally helpful in making sure we easily found the property and were well acquainted with all necessary information. The owner had left a notebook with key information about the area, etc. that was most useful in finding what we needed in the area. The location was great for us to tour during the day and return in the evening for peaceful relaxation. We visited Pisa, spent a day in Luca, did the Cinque Terre and spent a day in Portovenere. After visiting the over crowded Cinque Terre and Portovenere, we were very pleased that we were staying at the more rural villa and not among the throngs of people at the beach. Also, as an avid cook, with great fresh ingredients available, we used the kitchen quite a bit once we returned in the evenings. The house has a patio outside the kitchen were we spent the majority of our time, including for meals. The views of the vineyards surrounding the house made experience exceptional. Everyone we met in the town were very friendly and helpful and the restaurant owners were extremely hospitable. We are hoping for the opportunity to return in the near future. The entire experience was a joy.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: After all the planning I was so sorry not to meet you but I am happy that Alessia was a good substitute and that she was able to help you all out during your stay. Thank you for the wonderful review and it is evident that you were able to enjoy what Villa Chiara is all about.....relaxing with a good glass of wine after a long day out and enjoying the rolling hills and countryside! We hope that you decide to come back someday soon.

Villa Chiara was the perfect place for our family vacation. As a group of 6 adults and 7 children, including 2 babies, we found all the place we needed both inside the villa and out in the garden. We really enjoyed the elegant yet cosy charm of the house, which we also found very comfortable. It is a perfect place just to relax and to contemplate the beautiful nature around it. However, it is also very conveniently located near the pleasant city of La Spezia and nice beaches. The owner of Villa Chiara was very welcoming, and the wine produced on its land very tasty! We will definitely come back soon!Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: It was such a pleasure to have your family at Villa Chiara and I am so happy that you all enjoyed your stay. Thank you for the wonderful review and hope to have you all back soon in this beautiful area of Italy!

We have just returned from a week long stay at this property. It is very comfortable-- large rooms, nice clean bathrooms and kitchen with a great terrace to enjoy your wine and book, and centrally located in a quiet village with easy access to the Cinque Terre and the La Spezia train station. We enjoyed shopping at the village grocery and local fruit shop and drank white wine made with grapes grown at the villa. We especially enjoyed meeting and speaking with the villa owners and hearing about the history of the villaand surrounding areas. We toured in different directions every day but always looked forward to returning to "our" villa. We took the train to Florence one day, drove to Pisa one day, and if we had any questions, Sarah was always available by phone. The view of the village and the church bells were enjoyed by all. We enjoyed every minute at this charming property.Recommended for: Girls getaway, pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: It was such a pleasure to have you all at the villa and I am so happy that you were able to fully take in the villa's easy country lifestyle. A good book on the back porch enjoying the views with a glass of wine in your hand!! Next time I hope you all can make it for grape harvesting! This year was amazing. Thank you very much for the great review!

My husband, 2 boys, parents and grandmother all stayed here for 2 weeks for an unforgetable family vacation! The villa provided us with a true taste of the Italian life-- going to the market each morning for fresh bread and produce, a truck that would come to the end of the long driveway with cheeses, meat and pastas. And of course the villa owner gave us wine from property!! This is the perfect spot for relearning how to stop and smell the roses. As the villa is quite serene there plenty of activies near by. We were able to go on day trips to Florence, Cinque Terre, Portovenere and Pisa. The owner even gave us a ride to the train station and helped us make arrangements for a few days in Rome. As we are trying to plan another trip, my mind keeps drifting back to unwinding on the back patio overlooking gardens and vineyards with a great book and a glass of wine!! I could go on and on about how lovely this property is, how it's perfectly located, that the owner was beyond helpful, and THE FOOD.....but then it may not be available for next trip!!!! Honestly breathtaking and life long memory making. ENJOY!Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.

About the owner: My name is Sarah Ferrari and I have been living in Italy for 18 years. I met Franco, my husband in Portofino over 15 years ago. That is what brought me to the beautiful area of La Spezia which offers so many alternatives for an outdoorsy like myself. This property belonged to my husband's grandfather and was their summer estate. For over 12 years now I have had the opportunity to share the villa with many guests who have truly enjoyed the authentic atmosphere, the peaceful setting amongst the vineyards and the vicinity to so many places of interest.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
From the villa you will enjoy wonderful views of the surrounding hillside and the village below. A unique characteristic of Villa Chiara is that guests can actually walk down the little road that leads down to the village and do their daily shopping at the local bread store, vegetable store etc and enjoy a coffee down at the local bar. For avid hikers there is even a trail that leads over the hills and into the CinqueTerre town of Vernazza. We have been promised that in the near future there will even be a funicular shorten the distance between Ricco' del Golfo and the CinqueTerre. In Italy though.....time runs very slowly!!! Let's keep our fingers crossed!!
