This cozy cabin is located in the spectacular San Luis Valley in South Central Colorado just 5 miles south of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Located 1500 feet above the valley floor (at 9000 feet) the cabin and large deck have 360 degree view of 14,000 ft. peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Range, an expansive view of the vast San Luis Valley including the far off San Juan Mountains and the Great Sand Dunes National Park. If you are looking for unequaled quiet, wildlife, (eg. bears, elk, antelope, deer, bobcats, coyotes etc.), amazing views, and hiking, this is the place for you - spring, summer, fall or winter. There is great hiking right outside the cabin door. We leave directions for a terrific hike to Zapata Falls (the back way!) Spring, summer and fall brings us three kinds of hummingbirds not to mention many other songbirds and raptors. We are dog friendly.
Other attractions nearby include: Rail tours on the Toltec-Cumbres Pass Railroad & Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, Old Ft. Garland, San Luis Stations of the Cross, The Gator Farm, numerous cultural heritage sites and museums, hiking trails, bird watching, Greater Sandhill Cranes (Mar-Apr, Oct-Nov), summer farmers' market, local festivals, and rock climbing or hiking at Penitente, a famous climbing area with beautiful rock formations. A natural hot springs pool, The Sand Dunes Pool, is within a 30 minute drive. The Pool features a large "hot tub temperature" pool and a somewhat cooler very large swimming pool (no chlorine) with deep end and diving boards, baby pool, and small restaurant which has recently expanded its menu. You may eat there whether or not you choose to swim. They raise and sell their own organic tomatoes. Joyful Journey is a spa located about 1 hour north just south of the intersection of 285 and 17. They offer massage and several natural pools. They are located near a large bat cave where you can observe the bats emerge in the summer evenings. (The Orient Mine).
San Luis Valley Regional Airport airport is located in Alamosa (35 minutes away) and has daily connections to Denver.

Why the Owner Chose Alamosa
We chose Zapata because of the unique valley bordered by two mountain ranges that provide a range of outdoor activities. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is right next door and numerous hot springs allow for a good soak after a long day of outdoor activities.

We spent a few days at this cabin and were completely pleased. The listing information was extremely accurate and there were no surprises when we arrived. Kim and Mike ( owners) were very pleasant to work with from the initial reservation all the way to our departure, but at the same time they respected our privacy and allowed us to have a great vacation time. The cabin was clean, comfortable and had all the convienences anyone would need. The Zapata falls where great and the sands dunes were less then ten minutes away I would highly recomend this cabin to anyone that is interested in renting a cabin in this area. We will be back.

Our family of three spent a week here and used it as a base of operations for a vacation that spanned most of Southern Colorado. The cabin has spectacular views, comfortable bedding and a well-furnished small kitchen. The owner called us during the stay just to see if there was anything we needed or questions we had. The cabin is well maintained and clean. We may need to go back in the winter to see the area in the snow. We've already recommended this cabin to two other families.

Christmas in the Mountains

We felt very blessed to be able to spend some family time in this comfy, cozy, secluded cabin in the mountains over the holidays. We were invited to spend Christmas with family in Alamosa; however, we have a couple of adopted four-legged family members that wouldn't appreciate Christmas in town. We couldn't have been happier about finding a cabin that allowed them to join us. This is such a different experience than a hotel because it allows you an opportunity to really connect with family and nature in a way you couldn't get in town. Thank you for allowing us a beautiful taste of cabin living. It makes us really want to look for a cabin to purchase for ourselves.

"What a lovely place! We had a great time - The panoramic view is amazing. The hummingbirds' antics kept us mesmerized. Great place to bring kids - especially with the WiFi (Netflix & internet games capablility!) when they are needing some "down time". Very comfy cabin - Thanks for making it SO easy! Couldn't find a guest book, so feel free to add these comments. 5-29-10 Mary, David et.al. " (Manager's comment: Netflix is not provided by owner. Guestbook now in place)

The pictures do not do this cabin justice. The views of the valley and Sand Dunes are breathtaking. The cabin is cute and very cozy. It was in the perfect location for taking the kids to the dunes, hot springs pool and alligator refuge. The owners gave great directions and were available if we needed them. We had a fun filled weekend and definatley want to visit again.

I've been fortunate to stay at this delightful getaway spot several times throughout the year. Snuggled up against the Sangre de Cristos, this private and secluded spot is one of my favorites! Strolling through the old growth juniper and pinon forests is incredible, with magical views of the Sand Dunes peaking through the trees now and then. The valley itself has so many places to explore - I really enjoy the numerous hot springs. Thanks, I'll certainly be back soon!

We stayed at this cabin for three days and two nights mid-January 2010. The cabin, furnishings, views, and hiking opportunities are fantastic. We thuroughly enjoyed meeting the neighbors who manage the cabin and made us feel at home immediately. We'll definitely be back soon - renting this cabin was a real bargin.

My wife and I loved this cabin! We stayed here over the holidays with our three dogs and had a great time. The views of the Sand Dunes and the Sangre de Cristos are incredible. There is even a dog door leading out to a fenced dog run that was really convenient. The cabin itself is small but quite cozy and has lots of big windows that overlook the surrounding area. We were a little disappointed in the video library but with the wifi we were able to access our Netflix account and watch movies on our laptop. We would definitely consider staying here again in the future.
