Location: Orange, Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire, USA (20 Miles East of Lebanon, NH, 45 NW of Concord, NH)

Accommodations:  Yurt, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-5)

Our yurt is spacious, well furnished, and accessible. It is a "green" as any property available for vacation. LED light in kitchen and bathroom assure a minimum of electric use. Propane refrigerator (silent) and stove provide efficient, but convenient cooking. A propane lantern is available for more evening light should you decide you want a card game or reading before bed. Other than that, we use a generator to vacuum the yurt between visitors.

Sitting on 57 acres abutting Cardigan Mt. State Forest means that it will be a back country experience, yet it is close to the road and amenities in the nearby town of Canaan. It is private, but remote enough that the sight of moose tracks on our property is relatively common. (Bear tracks less so, but they’re there) You can hike, ski, or snowshoe to the top of our property, while enjoying wonderful views, enjoy a picnic at our brook, or simply enjoy the nearby trails of the state forest. Our campfire ring is available for cooking or just enjoying the evening. A local waterfall is less than 100 yards away. You can fall asleep to the gentle sounds of the night critters and the waterfall just down the road. When the stream in front of the yurt is running, it only adds to the background noise of nature.

It IS a back-country camp, with back country plumbing - or lack thereof. We provide a composting toilet, and don't expect the guests to empty the buckets. (There is a spare). (If this makes you squeamish, I assure you it is FAR better than an outhouse, and even better than a porta-pottie. It is more convenient (in the yurt), and it is amazing that the cover material that assists composting also kills the smell. The ultimate green toilet!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2007

My husband and I purchased this property for retirement. We haven't built our retirement home yet, so that means your vacation experience will be private, and quiet. We love the fact that from the top of the property, we can see very little evidence of civilization, but plenty of mountains. We actively hike the property frequently, and have a "critter cam" so we can get pictures of the local fauna. So far, we have pictures of moose, deer, bear, turkeys, and fox.

Why the Owner Chose Orange

We're country people at heart. We love being surrounded by nature. One requirement for my retirement property was that it had to be within hearing distance of spring peepers! I love sitting by the deck and just listening to the sounds of nature - whether it's the hoot of the local owl, the pecking of the resident piliated woodpecker, or the occasional sound of turkeys clucking as the forage through the woods. Located in a spectacular private valley, the site also offers wonderful star-gazing. Be sure to check the moon phase if you want the best star-gazing! http://stardate.org/nightsky/moon/

The Unique Benefits of this Yurt

Whether you choose to hike Cardigan Mountain on your stay, go berry picking on the mountain, or ski at nearby Ragged Mountain, your stay will be relaxing. It's close enough to Canaan that you can choose to eat in town, or cook in our fully furnished kitchen.

    • Our family - including our 3 sons - 13, 10, and 4 - enjoyed a wonderful week-long stay during July, 2009. It was a great back-country experience with hiking, nature, berry-picking, and peace and quiet all included. This is a very comfortable accomodation, and while private to the extreme using the fine roads one can pop into town in 10 minutes to pick up a pizza if you get the urge or just need supplies. This was a vacation that will be talked about in our family for many years, and the price was right!
