Perfect Getaway

Guest: Jamie (Los Angeles, CA)
Date of Stay: 04/30/12 Review Submitted: 05/09/12

Thank you Bill and Dondi for the wonderful condo. It was better than we had expected. The condo is fully furnished and larger than it appears in the pictures. Bill and Dondi were exceptional at providing places to eat while on the island. The condo itself is located in a great area with plenty of restaurants and grocery store within walking distance. The beach in front of the condo is very family friendly and is a great snorkeling spot. Lahaina and Whaler's Village are very close by (5- 10 min drive). I would highly recommend this rental and look forward to renting it again on our next trip to Maui. Mahalo.

Perfect place to stay for a relaxing week in Maui

Guest: ML (Washington, DC)
Date of Stay: 04/16/12 Review Submitted: 05/18/12

We spent a week here in April and couldn't have been happier. The pictures on the website don't do the condo justice, the views are amazing (both the view of the ocean as well as the view of the West Maui mountains from the extra bedroom). A perfect view to see the humpback whales jumping and splashing just off shore on their winter/spring visit to the islands. The condo feels modern and spotlessly clean with all the amenities of home and we definitely enjoyed being able to walk to the grocery store in the evenings, cook dinner in the kitchen, and eat out on the lanai watching the beautiful sunset. No complaints at all--especially as a comparable room at one of the big resort hotels would have cost three-four times the price! Will definitely stay here again next time make it back to Maui.

Clean, updated Mahana unit-Great for the family

Guest: Dana H. (OC-CA)
Date of Stay: 03/31/12 Review Submitted: 04/09/12

The Mahana is a great property. We normally rent a one bedroom unit when we come by ourselves. Since we were traveling with our nieces this time we decided to rent a two bedroom-they are located at the corners of the buildings. We knew the view would be spectacular; it was fabulous. We saw turtles going by almost every day. One day we saw so many humpbacks we couldn't keep track. One pod was less than a quarter of mile from the shoreline. The unit has upgraded appliances and bathrooms. We liked the tile floors-it was easy to keep clean. It was really nice that the mgmt co., chosen by the owners, provides clean crisp linens and substantive towels. The use of a keypad for access is so much more efficient. Carrying those credit card keys is a nuisance. Mahalo.

Uninspired Place with Great Ocean View

Guest: CCH (Pacific Northwest)
Date of Stay: 11/04/11 Review Submitted: 11/09/11

I read reviews and base my selection of those reviews so here is mine. Pros: Enormous ocean view, lots of windows all with views. Owners seemed nice. Cons: uninspired furnishings, every utensil, coffee maker, drawers, cupboard, and beach chairs old and cheap. Toilets hard to flush, one bedspread missing with mattress showing- all just a bit warn, windows in 2nd bedroom and throughout do no open (except slider in living room and master bedroom) and are non-functional without cranks. Had to prop open the front door with cardboard to get air flow. This could be an amazing condo with a little attention. Furnishings could be even be used but comfortable. Feels institutional. On the other hand we met people who love the condos so much that they would put up with anything.

Owner response: As a successful motel operator and owner for the past 30 years, we have always appreciated and solicited feedback and comments from our guests in order to improve our guests’ experience and satisfaction. As a result, we have always been highly ranked on online trip advisor sites. However, not all feedback comments are necessarily helpful or true. Our new AC system at the Mahana is designed to save energy around a 2 zone system where the guests may select whatever temperature they desire. Alternatively, fans, or opening one or more of the 3 doors can be used for cross ventilation. Any one of these methods alone are quite effective at achieving a desired comfortable environment without the need to open windows. Previously, energy was wasted by running the AC with the windows open. This is also no longer possible in studio and one bedroom units at the Mahana. Propping open a door with cardboard makes no sense since the doors have adjustable openings. In addition, our furnishings are updated frequently and our appliances are almost new without exception, including the coffee maker. We have newer Kohler low flow toilets. We pride ourselves on having a complete kitchen. In addition, our beach chairs are higher grade aluminum and canvas with drink holders. Although we don’t claim perfection, almost without exception, our guests have enjoyed their stay evidenced by the large number of repeat guests that return to our condo year after year.

Gorgeous Sunsets...perfect condo! Don't pass this one up!!!

Guest: Beth T. (Antelope, CA)
Date of Stay: 09/26/11 Review Submitted: 10/10/11

This condo was PERFECT!!! It was everything we asked for...and more!! This place is just amazing! It is incredibly spacious and the views are breathtaking!! Bill was a dream to work with, communicating quickly and answering all our questions, including recommendations for activities & favorite restaurants. We came to the islands to celebrate our parent's 50th wedding anniversary and spent the last week of our vacation here at this condo...and we felt we ended on the highest note possible!! Our parents were so impressed and kept raving about how beautiful it was! I was a little nervous that the "check in" process was done through a computer (with no human to respond to problems), but it was fast and seamless...I worried for nothing! All the codes worked great and the resort is amazing! We enjoyed breakfast every morning out on the lanai (what a life!) and loved the gorgeous sunsets! We also enjoyed many late night dips in the pool and hot tub! The barbeque area was perfect for a couple of steak dinners during the week! With the exception of food and drink, the condo is stocked with every item you could ever need! We loved having a washer and dryer to use also! The only negative I could mention is that the living room gets very hot in the afternoon if you don't draw the drapes and keep the air conditioning on high...but it is very minor compared to all the positives! We fell in love with Maui and it was due in large part to our experience here at this condo! We will definitely be back!! Mahalo!

Great condo, great location

Guest: Mark (Anaheim Hills CA)
Date of Stay: 09/09/11 Review Submitted: 10/03/11

This is the second time we've stayed in this condo having had such a great experience in 2006. We've stayed in the Mahana 4 times now but we're sold on this unit. The unit is on the 11th floor on the corner and has beautiful views of ocean, and the islands of Lanai and Molokai. The unit is stocked with all the kitchen utensils one needs to cook (for real), the bedding is comfortable and nice. The master bedroom has access to the lanai and it is nice to sleep with the slider open listening to the waves breaking below. The lanai is nice with glass rails so there's little obstruction of view. We ate outside for nearly every meal...just so relaxing. For those planning to rent this condo, don't go to the grocery store before looking at what is there--you'll otherwise be buying things not needed. Although I don't think the owner stocks beer, there was plenty for us left from the earlier guests, and we left plenty for the next guests. This is true of condiments and seasonings. Now outside there's absolutely wonderful snorkeling just a short walk down the beach. The coral is beautiful and there are every imaginable tropical fish, eels, octopi, turtles. You'll be swimming with them all. It's fun to play in the gentle waves on a boogie board or just float about. We stayed two weeks and left on excursions only two days...now we've been to Maui 4 x so we've seen most of the common sites...but it's just so nice that if you want to relax on the beach this is the condo to rent. I should say that there's a nice pool and hot tub for those that don't want to deal with the sand or just want to lay out in the sun. There's plenty of places to lay out on the grass area in front of the building, too. The Mahana added a small snack stand that serves simple meals, smoothies and shave ice. The Mahana is a resort. You just can't go wrong here. The price is great. The condo is great and the location is great.

Aloha Bill & Dondi!! This was our second stay in your ocean front condo at the Mahana. As our previous stay your unit was incredibly clean, spacious and provided gorgeous views that are second to none!! The BBQ area was the best not only for cooking but socializing with other guests, sharing each others adventures of the day. We ate our dinner on the lanai while watching beautiful sunsets and listening to Hawaiian music on the stereo. The views from your condo are like being on a cruise ship, without the crowds. We loved the new floor tile that was installed as well as the new see through railings on the lanai which provide an unobstructed view of the ocean. Dealing with you is a always a pleasure!!!! All of our questions are always responded to immediately. Going back to your condo at the Mahana now feels like going back home. On our future visits to Maui we would not consider staying anywhere other than your beautiful unit, our home away from home. Thank you for a beautiful vacation, and making us feel like your ohana.

Mahana - July 2011

Guest: DJAC (Scotts Valley, CA)
Date of Stay: 07/21/11 Review Submitted: 08/17/11

Our stay at Mahana was just fantastic and the condo was just awesome for the family. The accommodations were perfect, spacious enough for our family of four. First time staying in a condo, we will not hesitate to contact you again visiting Maui. It’s the way to go! I have already told numerous folk of our great trip and wonderful condo with a view to die for. I have had no hesitation in recommending your home away from home. Its all about location and Mahana has it! Within easy walking distance to shops/market 5mins and a leisurely walk to the larger resorts along the beachfront. Napili and Kapalua are only a short drive away. Dont miss stopping at Honulua Bay. Only 15-mins away and just fantastic, got to swim with sea turtles and just made my son's day! Lots of folk pay big $ and go ther by boat excursions but its on your doorstep. Park at mile 33 marker and take a short walk through tropical forest and your there.. As for reccomendations on activities, we were quite busy! We booked many ouf our excursions at Boss Frogs about a 5min drive from the condo. Parasailing (West Maui Parasail $60each) was awesome as well as snorkeling at Molokini ($84 each breakfast and BBQ lunch provided). Booked with Boss and he gave a discount, went to Molokini, Turtle Town and South of Makena to see the spinner Dolphins - pretty cool when they chase after the boat.. Tip - the water does get cold at Molikini and Turtle Town when your are in the water for a couple of hours - rent a wetsuit on board for $10 its worth it! Boss Froggs try hard to get you to rent underwater camers but its pricey and you spend most of the time fidgety with the camera and missing the eels and fish! Restaurants - Fish Market Deli was great located on right just before Boss Froggs, best breakfast was at Plantation House (pricey but worth it for the view!). Kobe Tepan in Lahaina was good, Dukes right next to Mahana was really great and become our local for happy hour!! Best restaurant was Pacific O right on the beach in Lahaina (pricey but special!). Go there first for a meal around 7pm and you get a sneak peak at Feast of Lele. Awesome Laua show and well worth the price, good food and lots to drink!! Whalers Village - tried Cane and Taro - not bad but Hula Grill was overated and just to busy. Ventured down to the shops at Wailea for dinner at Longhis - we all had Italian dishes and it was awesome. To Mahana Owners - Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful home

Date of Stay: 07/16/11 Review Submitted: 07/27/11

We really enjoyed our lovely condo on Kaanapali beach. The rooms were very spacious and very clean. It was located very near restaurants and grocery stores. The new Sea Walk on Kaanapali beach starts just to the south of our condo. Nice beaches to the right and left and directly in front is great snorkeling with turtles to swim with in the coral reef. My son in law liked it better than Honolaua Bay. The view from the condo is so good that you feel like you're on an ocean liner and surrounded by the sea. The owners are very easy to deal with and give you a great list of nearby good restaurants. The snorkel gear was appreciated. We would definitely stay here again.

11 Days in Paradise

Date of Stay: 06/02/11 Review Submitted: 06/22/11

I have stayed in both of Bill and Dondi's Mahana condos over the last 6 or 7 years and they are always clean, comfortable and have unbelievable views of the ocean and the two islands (Lanai and Molokai). This unit is a corner 2BR unit with breathtaking views to the west and north. It was just partially remodeled with new kitchen appliances and tile floors throughout. All you need is a bathing suit or two and some t-shirts. There is a washer and dryer in the unit which I always use-nothing like flying home with all clean clothes. Wait till you see the most gorgeous sunsets you have ever experienced while sipping a Mai Tai on your lanai (deck). Bill and Dondi are great hosts and are very responsive to any needs you may have and the Mahana is one of very few properties that is actually ocean front, not just ocean view. Walk outside the Mahana and you are on the sand with great snorkeling only steps away. Go next door to Dukes Restaurant for Happy Hour cocktails or walk to several restaurants and a super market a block away. After you stay here once, you will return!

Your condo was extremely comfortable and beautiful. My brother was so captivated by the view we had a hard time getting him outside. Everything in the Condo was as it should be and that made our stay in Maui just as we had hoped. Your recommendations for restaurants were excellent also, especially the Deli down the road. I can assure you, when we go back to Maui (and we will), our first inquiry will be to you. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

King & I had a wonderful vacation, sharing Maui with our daughter and son-in-law and our son and his girlfriend. The Mahana #1109 was a perfect fit for us- large, well-equipped, and with a view that will last a lifetime. Great beach, hot tub and pool, and lanai. Bill & Dondi's activity and restaurant recommendations were a big help. It's obvious that they consider the needs and desires of their guests in their attention to details.

One note for future guests-- they do recycle at the facility, but I didn't learn until the end of our stay. I recommend sorting out the recyclables-- the locals (and nature!) will thank you!

Just returned from a great stay at Bill & Dondi's Maui Paradise Condo. I love this location as you are right on the water and you do not get that with the typical Maui resorts.Depending on the season, the lanai is a great spot for whale watching and looking for sea turtles. It was flat when we were there but I know there are generally quite a few surfers to watch as well.We swam and snorkeled about 100 yards from the buildingThe condo is huge and one could not ask for more windows. The beach chairs, umbrella and boogie boards were a nice addition. There was even a 2010 Entertainment Book provided (which we did not use).Mahalo for a wonderful Maui vacation!

Thank you, Bill and Dondi, for allowing us to stay in your beautiful condo in Kaanapali. My wife and I, and our 3 children (ages 8, 10, and 18) had a wonderful time. The condo is in an excellent location in Kaanapali, and is a real value compared to many similar offerings nearby. There are several restaurants and a grocery store within walking distance, and the remodeled pool with the gas grills on the pool deck is a great touch. We'll be back!

Aloha Bill & Dondi, Thanks for making our Maui trip better than we could have imagined! The 1109 was extremely clean, well stocked with anything needed, quiet and very comfortable! Of course, the views of the ocean and mountains were second to none! The Mahana common grounds were also extremely clean, quiet and peaceful. Everything was working and the bbq area was the best. In fact we used the bbq everynight and ate on the lanai watching the most incredible sunsets ever while listening to the waves and some Hawaiian music we played on the stereo. Thanks for the tips on places to eat, get food and to visit. This saved a lot of time wandering around figuring out what to do. We also loved the closness to Lahaina but far enough away from the crowds to be quiet and restful after a day sightseeing. The tradewinds were so refreshing that we never had to use the ac!! I think it was about 10 degress cooler at the Mahana than it was in Lahaina! We look forward to staying at the Mahana on our next trip and will stay at your condo again!! Mahalo!!!!

We had a fantastic time -- 1/17 - 1/27! The condo was the best furnished one we've ever stayed in. The whale-watching view from the 11th floor was fantastic, snorkeling was great (remember to go about 300 yards from the condo towards Black Rock), grills on the ground floor are top notch! The deli food was so good we ended up not eating at a lot of restaurants -- definitely 4 stars! Hearing the whales singing while we were snorkeling was one of the true highlights of the trip. We'll definitely stay again.

We stayed in 1109 from 2/15 to 2/28 2009 and really enjoyed the unit. My wife and I have stayed at the Mahana many times. We brought friends with us to Hawaii who had never been and they could believe the views from the lanai, they can't what to go back. My cousin who lives on O'hau also came to visit us and he and wife could'nt get over the number of whales and turtles we saw from the lanai. They now understand why we spend so much time at the Mahana. Thanks again Bill & Dondi. Aloha. Tom & Julie Larsen

What's not to like? Our stay at Mahana #1109 was absolutely wonderful. This two bedroom corner unit was a window to the world, a visual delight on the water. Hearing the waves 24/7 was a calming, relaxing experience. I can only rave about the condo that provided for our every need, was located in a terrific area as a base of operations and never felt crowded. We followed this great stay with a three night stay in Waikiki and for all three days wished we were back at Mahana #1109 soaking up the Maui experience we had reluctantly left. Thank you Bill and Dondi. We will be making plans to return in 2010 and hopefully will be able to once again stay at your condo. Mahalo Martin Sweney

Great condo in a perfect Kaanapali location. Bill and Dondi's wonderful unit had everything we needed to feel at home and comfortable during our stay---from cable TV & DVD players, to extra detergents for the dishwasher and washing machine, to beach toys for the kids. With stellar views of Lanai and Molokai, well-appointed accomodations, and a great location, this is a great place to stay on your Maui vacation. Highly recommended.

Bill & Dondi, Thanks for sharing your little piece of paradise. What a view! Not only on the beach side but a beautiful view of the West Maui mountains on the other side. Location is just perfect for most all activities. Very nice complex, plenty of parking, fast elevators and helpful personnel. We can't wait to go back and stay at your condo again. Mahalo

Bill and Dondi-We had an absolutely incredible time and your condo was perfect! We feel quite lucky to have been able to stay there. The sunsets were all gorgeous, we spent many an evening on the lanai enjoying it. We also really liked drinking coffee and watching the ocean in the early morning. I could go on and on, but I just wanted you to know how much we enjoyed ourselves. Thanks so much! Lisa

We just returned from an awesome time in unit 1109! The accomodations were very comfortable and spacious. The views were awesome & could not be beat!! There is a huge picture window in the living area & the lanai is perfect & very private, there are 5 chairs & a table. The condo had everything you needed for cooking & the beach, including beach chairs, umbrella and boogie board. Liquid handsoap, bar soap & dishwasher detergent were provided for you, as well as an ample supply of towels and beach towels. You will need to bring your own shampoos, which I always do anyway. You can pick up small size laundry soap boxes at ABC store, right up the street on the left. Star market is practically across the street, but more expensive than Safeway, which is only about 10 minutes away on the right on the main road(HWY 30). As mentioned by others, there is a pizza/ice cream place & subway, right across from the condo area. Maui Dive shop is also there for any rental needs. It was cool and windy some days we were there, but I expected that this time of year. The water was too cold for us personally, but we're from the south and used to warmer water temps. We saw a beautiful rainbow from our window the first day there, it went from end to end! We also could see the whales daily. They were too far for our camera, but binoculars helped. A telescope would be even better I am sure. We also had surfers and wind kite surfers at different times. We drove up to Kapalua Bay, awesome waves and the surfers put on a great show for us. We went on the PWF whale watch, awesome, the Old Lahaina Luau, awesome and the Road to Hana, incredible views, hairy ride! Don't miss the gift shop in the Old Courthouse in Lahaina, also the visitor center. It is across from the harbor behind the Banyan tree. They had some nice and different items in there. There is a pool, not a fancy one, but that doesn't matter to us, we'd rather have the view we had. There were plenty of lounge chairs at the pool& the beach area, on the lawn. The jacuzzi was also up & running & we saw people using it. The staff we encountered were friendly and we had no trouble checking in or out. There is a 75 cent charge for local & 800 phone calls from the room. There are computers set up in the lobby & you can get on the internet for 20 cents per minute. They also have free wireless if you take your laptop. There were beach towels in our room, as ResortQuest only has towels at the pool for those who

You will also hear the waves as you sleep, what an awesome sound! Bill and Dondi were very good at responding quickly to calls & emails. They will help you in any way needed and answer questions for you. Feel free to email me with any questions and don't hesitate to book this condo! Debbie

We stayed at the Condo From January 3rd 2008 to Janaury 10th 2008. We had a wonderful time. The condo was great. We loved being able to sit out on the Lani and watch the whales while we ate breakfast, lunch or just relaxing. The weather was perfect when we were there. We had no rain and hardly any wind. The lack of wind gave us low surf which made playing at the beach great and safe for my children. The beach about 300 yards south of the condo turned out to be the best for us. Perfect white sand with no broken shells in the surf for about the first 10 yards out into the water and then a great reef for snorkeling after ten yards. The water visibility had to be at least 75 feet for a couple of days just 10 yards off the beach. We made the joke that a couple of days we were able to snorkel from the condo lani. The water was so clear you could see fish on the reef in front of the condo from the lani. The pool was open, but not the hot tub. We heard from people that the pool had been previously closed for some time while they had been refurbishing it. It was great that it was open and the kids had fun playing in it when they came in off the beach. We did manage to leave the condo and visit some of the other sights on the island. We went to Molokini, Haleakala, the road to Hana (even though we didn't make it all the way to Hana) and the blowhole east of Kapalua (I can't remember how to spell the name of it but I think it is something like Nakalee). There is a hike down from the road to the blowhole, but it is well worth it. The vast diversity of the landscape of the island was fascinating. We had a lot of great meals including Mama's Fish House, Roy's, The Rusty Harpoon and Hula Grill. We had a lot of fun at Bubba Gump's and Cheeseburger in Paradise. We also got take out from the the little place in the strip center just north that you had recommended and ate on the lani at the condo (I can't remember how to spell it but it started with the letter O). All in all we had a great time and would love to go back.

We stayed in Bill and Dondi's condo in October 07. It was absolutely incredible and one of the best vacations we have had, thanks in big part to the accommodations. The views from the balcony were spectacular and my favorite part of the day was getting up early with my coffee and watching the day begin there. The snorkeling was great, we took a trip to Molokini which is definitely worth it. The food was fantastic as well. I also very much enjoyed daily walks on the beach, it was a perfect way to start the day. And Bill and Dondi made it very easy and convenient, giving us guides on local cuisine and activities. I highly recommend this condo.

Bill & Dondi’s condo lacks for nothing and is so comfortable you feel like you are at home. The views from either side of the unit are incredible, and we often found ourselves running between the front and back of the condo to photograph double rainbows, sunrises or sunsets. The snorkeling was incredible and we didn’t even have to drive to most of it. Walk down the beach almost in front of the condo to Old Airport Beach and you’ll see turtles, octopus and many beautiful tropical fish. Walk a bit further down the beach to Black Rock, where your head spins with seeing so many turtles, moray eels, sting rays and even more diversity of fish and corals. You should also take a trip to snorkel in Honolua Bay Marine Preserve. The fish are huge and incredibly beautiful. Hint: We bought a great book across the street at the Maui Dive Shop called Hawaii’s Fishes: A Guide for Snorkelers, Divers and Aquarists. Each day after snorkeling we enjoyed identifying the names of all the new fish we saw. And the photos are wonderful. We really took advantage of the dining guide Bill and Dondi provides. It was as simple as running to the Star Market across the street; walking to the Okazuya Deli 2 blocks away and getting great takeout of fish and chips or mahi mahi in lemon caper sauce; going to Hula Grill in the Whaler’s Village or saving the best for last at Sansei for some of the freshest sushi ever. And don’t miss the fried tempura ice cream for dessert. Bill and Dondi, Mahalo for sharing your home with us and for your prompt and professional manner in helping us set up a fabulous vacation time. We will look forward to our next visit.Shirley, Michael, Carol

We stayed three weeks in Hawaii (April 28, 2007 to May 18, 2007) with the first week in Maui at Bill and Dondi's Mahana #1109. The condo met and exceeded all expectations. We should have made this our last stop in Hawaii, not the first. And we should have stayed longer. It is in an area that is so relaxing. We walked the beach to the Whaler's Village twice (we were told this is about 2-3 miles). The view from the lanai at night is spectacular. Some nights cruise ships pass by between the islands of Maui and Lanai and Molokai. The sunsets are breathtaking. Lanai and Molokai look like a stone's throw away and if the sky is clear enough you can just make out Oahu in the distance further to the west. We could go on and on about how great the room and the surrounding area is but you will have to see it for yourself. We are already planning our next Hawaiian vacation and this condo is most certainly part of that plan.

Our family of 4 stayed in unit 1109 for 9 terrific nights in August. This unit has everything you need, even beach chairs! It was immaculate, and so well stocked. There is a market right across the street. Make sure you look at the guidebooks in the drawer under the television in the living room! They were very helpful. The washer and dryer was great to have, we took less clothes knowing we had it in the unit and we still brought too much! The Mahana is a wonderful location, great beaches surround it to the right and left. Plenty of great snorkeling. The sunset from the balcony and through the floor to ceiling glass windows is amazing. Bill and Dondi are a pleasure to deal with. The space we had in the unit for the cost was far greater then any hotel suite could offer us as a family of 4. You won't want to leave! We know we will return in the future!

We have one word that sums up Dondi and Bills condo...WOW!!! The view is INCREDIBLE and we had everything we needed to call it "home" for the week that we were there. It's also very centrally located, as in close to Kaanapali, Lahaina and great beaches. We will DEFINATELY be back!!!

We were lucky enough to be able to stay in unit 1109 from March 10-24, 2007. This is the second time we have stayed in one of Bill and Dondi's units and we are currently making plans to stay in a unit of theirs in January of '08. The view out the livingroom window (which filled the whole living room wall) was incredible as was the view that greeted us each morning from the bed. You simply can't get a view like this in a hotel room om Maui!! It's great to find such trustworthy people to rent from!

We were delighted to stay in 1109 3/2-3/9/07 with another couple. It was the best supplied condo that we have ever stayed in (most of the others have been time-share exchanges, not private owners). So many extras available. The location itself was absolutely perfect for us. Everything I have read in the comment section I would agree with. No large crowds while we were there. Since we were in the "master bedroom" we could see the beautiful moon shining over the water at night. One point...we felt it was a good idea that there not be lights on the lanai..keeps the late night noise to a minimum, we think. Carolyn and John Stern
