Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2007
Originally from California, made a career move to North Carolina over 15 years ago and immediately fell in love with this beautiful State and it's people. I work in the legal technology industry and my husband is an aerial photographer. Though we live in the city, we are lucky to have enough room for three large rescue dogs, a cat and organic garden. We enjoy our city life but escape often to the mountains to unwind and relax.
Why the Owner Chose West Jefferson
We decided to buy our mountain farmhouse because with our busy schedules and the dogs, we didn't get to travel as much as we liked. We decided to buy something we could easily get to and escape our everyday lives. We had vacationed often in and around West Jefferson and were already in enamored with the area. We fell in love with the "farmhouse" the moment we stepped foot on the long front porch and were embraced by the cool breezes and peace and quiet of the mountains.
The Unique Benefits of this House
The Parkway Farmhouse is a beautifully furnished and decorated home with many touches from local artists including art, pottery, lamps and soaps. The Farmhouse is located less than a mile off the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway. Walk out the front door and hike to stunning waterfalls or mountain vistas. Take the parkway to breakfast or lunch in Glendale Springs or the Historic Lodge in Doughton State Park. Dine at the River House or the quaint mountain town of West Jefferson. Float down the "New", fish for trout, or just sit on the front porch and watch the deer cross the yard and the birds on the feeder. Whatever your definition of a good time, you'll find it at the Parkway Farmhouse.

Ellen, Thank you so much for letting us stay in your gorgeous mountain home. My family and I had such a great time. The house is beautiful inside and out. We loved the decorations and "style" of the house in general. The location was so convenient. We hiked down to the waterfall just down the road multiple times and found new places to explore every time. Within an hour's driving distance, we found Price Park, EB Jeffress Park, Moses Cone Park, Mt. Jefferson Park - all great hikes for us and the kids. Sitting around the warm fireplace sipping a warm drink on a cold rainy day was a highlight of the trip. Roasting marshmallows and making S'mores by the fire pit was fun. The kitchen was so well stocked with spices, pots and pans, tools, etc. We cooked some great meals at the house and also discovered some good local flavor. The neighbors were so friendly - Joel who lives down the street was kind enough to give me about 2 hours of his time on Saturday diagnosing and fixing a problem with the battery on our car. I would have been stranded if not for him helping out! Altogether, this was a magical vacation for us and the beautiful house was a large part of that! I can't wait to come back again in the summer and canoe, go gem mining, hiking, and on and on. Thanks again - we loved it!

We did have a lovely time and would love to rent your home again (in the near future if this heat keeps up!). We did go to the Virginia Creeper and it was both very beautiful and very enjoyable! My husband (after he got back to normal after turning green on the hairpin ride up) and kids loved it and said they want to do it again. Thank you so much for recommending it!!! The weather was not great on Sunday when we left so we decided not to tube on the New River which disappointed the kids, but on the way out we were honored with a mother deer and her two young ones that still had their spots. On the way out we stopped at the Thistle Winery which ended up being a lot of fun for my husband and I as well as the kids since they have a creek out front that they invited the kids to enjoy in their bare feet...allowing us to relax. The two ladies that were facilitating the tastings that day were so personable and pleasant. It definitely gave me the break I need from trying to balance work and family. You are fortunate to have such a lovely getaway.

A lovely well equipped house and very secluded and private, the few neighbors we saw were very eager to wave hello. VERY quiet and peaceful. Notes: Litttles Gym in Jefferson was, very accomodating. Dont miss the Fresco Church just up the road in Glendale Springs and the Mountain Aire restaurant seems to be the closest place to eat in the off season. GPS is a bit sketchy up in the mountains so arrive in day light!

The Parkway Farmhouse was wonderful. It felt just like we were walking into a warm, welcoming home, not a rental house. It was great to sit on the porch in the morning drinking coffee and enjoying the peace and quiet.

What a wonderful home away from home. Just loved the house, beautifully decorated, fireplace to relax in front of with a nice glass of wine. My "HUSBAND" just could not stop walking around the house taking in the beauty of it all. Perfect location, right off the Blue Ridge Parkway.......if you stay here, you have just got to take the ride from Jefferson to Mt. Airy on the parkway, breathe taking views.

This house was so much more than the pictures and description given. It is very comfortable, yet wonderfully decorated. The owners have great taste. We were told they had a few CDs and some books. To our surprise they had a wide collection of many different types of music (no need to take any CDS) and a vast collection of books, from Studs Terkle to Kaye Gibson. I loved the kitchen because it is equipped with top of the line cooking materials, making me feel very much at home. The dishes are brightly colored and add so much to your dining experiences. The house is not difficult to find and is secluded enough not to be bothered with traffic or loud neighbors. We enjoyed the easy drive to W. Jefferson several times for shopping and dinner. It was the first time that I honestly did NOT want to leave when our time was up. The house is very open and easy to care for that I am not so sure we would hire the maid dervice again. I think it would be very easy to clean before leaving. One mistake we did make was not talking the trash to the dump on Saturday and bring it home with us. Needless to say, our trip home was a very fragrant one! The owner, Ellen, goes out of her way to make you stay as easy as she can. Anytime that you have a question she is very quick to reply and her directions are perfect. There is a small part of me that did not want to share what a great place this is for fear of it not being available for me when I want to rent it again. Trust me, if you decide to rent it, you will be glad that I was not selfish and shared this review.

Ellen, Everything was great. We had a marvelous time. If you could see the pictures of me sitting on the porch drinking Pomegranate Martinis.... you would know just how happy I was at your home. :-) It was the most relaxed I have been in a l-o-n-g time! I know it probably isn't easy to share your beautiful home, but I am so glad you do. You have it decorated beautifully and I loved the dishes! It was exactly the break we needed. We had lots of porch time. It was absolutely wonderful! Thanks again, Faith

Ellen, Just wanted you to know that we left the house today and thoroughly enjoyed it. We watched fireworks at Tweetsie Railroad, walked to the waterfall, ate lunch at Doughton Park, and went tubing down the New River. The house worked great for us, including the fire pit. We look forward to recommending the house to our friends and making use of it again ourselves. With thanks, Andy

Ellen, We had a wonderful weekend in your farmhouse! Thank you for sharing your little gem in the woods with us! We enjoyed every inch of the property. We walked to the waterfall, climbed the rope ladder, rocked on the rocking chairs, and enjoyed the peace and quiet. We biked the Creeper Trail, ate at Brick Stone Pizza and Sweet Aromas, and drove around on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Your recommendations and tips were very helpful. It was our first time to the area so your guidance and suggestions were invaluable. The weather was perfect! Can't think of anything that could have made it more enjoyable except for a longer weekend! Thank you for allowing us to enjoy your home! We would love to come back again! Fondly, Christine
