Zadoc Brewster House, Great central Maine coast location and gracious hosts:

Brewster house (upstairs apartment) met all our needs for a week on the Maine coast. Its kitchen was well equipped (maybe lacking a few spices and condiments). The washer/dryer were a convenient addition. We had 3 comfortable bedrooms to choose from for just the two of us. The upstairs apartment can easily accommodate a larger family or several couples. The living room/ dining room was spacious. The personal computer was an added touch we have not run into in other VRBO listed properties; it was very handy. We enjoyed our deck and the barbeque available for guests. The home has a filtered view of the Rockland harbor; if you want to sit on the water this is not the spot. It is very convenient to all the area has to offer and very fairly priced. Our hosts, Catherine and George, were gracious and very helpful in helping us explore the coast. We would not hesitate to stay there again.

A perfect place for our family

Guest: Kate (Tucson, Arizona)
Date of Stay: 08/15/10 Review Submitted: 09/09/10

This was our first time to rent a house online. I was a little nervous. We liked the fact that we could rent this property for the time we needed it, staying over on a Saturday evening. Most others were Friday to Friday rentals in the area. This house rental was flexible which met our needs. I felt confident from the photo's that the place was going to be cheerful if nothing else. It exceeded our expectations in so many ways. It was super clean with fresh paint, fabrics appliances, etc. Very lovely china and furnishings...and all the necessary items we needed to cook. Cathy and George provided excellent customer service and have exceptional attention to detail. Our family walked everyday and enjoyed the ocean breezes and views of the bay. We even walked to shopping and food. The workout room was well equiped and clean. We now have very fond memories and would love to return for another visit. I would definitely reccommend it to others.

Owner response:We love perfect guests like you! Please, please come again. WIth fond memories of you and your family, Cathy and George

Home Away from Home

Guest: Family Vacation (New York, NY)
Date of Stay: 07/02/10 Review Submitted: 07/11/10

Our family of four (with two young kids) spent 10 days in the upstairs apartment in early July 2010. We had a fantastic vacation. The unit is immaculate, tastefully decorated, and well-cared for. It truly feels like a home and not just a rental property. The owners have clearly put a tremendous amount of thought and effort into the property, and it shows in many different ways. They met us as we arrived and gave us a brief tour of the apartment. We had also arranged for a crib for our young daughter, and it had already been set up in one of the bedrooms. The three separate bedrooms ended up being ideal for the children, and because the weather was so warm, we used the air conditioning at night. Because of our small children, we had several meals in the apartment, and the kitchen had everything we needed. All in all, the apartment made traveling with small kids not just possible but actually enjoyable -- which is no easy feat. The owners were terrific. They were readily accessible when we locked ourselves out (twice!), gave us great suggestions for where to go with our kids, and were even kind enough to bring us a bottle of champagne to help us celebrate our younger child's 1st birthday. The home is more a "city" property, just north of downtown Rockland and right off Route 1, but Rockland harbor is just a few blocks away and it is a short drive to some local parks on the water. Although we found it a bit too far to walk to Main Street with our kids, it was a quick 2-minute drive to all the restaurants and shops and galleries, and it was also very easy to run up to Camden or Rockport too. There's a great grocery store just around the corner. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend the property. It definitely felt like a home away from home and was a great place to sample Mid-Coast Maine.

Owner response:You are special people and it was a pleasure to have you at the Captain Zadoc Brewster House. We were very pleased to know that enjoyed your vacation and thank you for your kind words. With all best wishes.

We had so much fun at Bayview Square … I still go on and on about it! Many mornings I wish were mornings like the ones in Rockland Our stay was a delight from start to finish. The rooms were spacious and bright, warm and inviting. We felt at home immediately. The amenities were first-class and our hosts were gracious, fun and knowledgeable. There were some days I would have been content to stay in the house all day! We'd highly recommend a stay at Bayview Square when in Rockland – all the comforts of home and so much more. We certainly intend to pay a return visit. George S.

Home Away From Home

We stayed in the upstairs apartment for two days at the beginning of our week long trip to Maine and 2 more days at the end. I loved it so much that I couldn't wait to get back. This is absolutely a wonderful home away from home. The linens were of good quality, the beds were cozy, and the towels were thick and fluffy. The house even smelled wonderful and I'm particular. We don't have pets and I'm unfortunately allergic but even though the home is pet friendly I never detected a trace of pet odor or even had a tickle in my nose. There are plenty of windows for natural light and fresh air. We never needed the air conditioning. The house is full of interesting things to read and look at and is beautifully but comfortably furnished. There are plenty of sights and restaurants with in walking distance or a short drive. The Owl's Head Transportation Museum and Breakwater Lighthouse were some of our favorites. Camden and other lovely villages are close by as well. I loved having tea in the afternoon from a real china cup (no styrofoam!) The neighbors that we met were friendly- a couple of hospitable little girls shared there bikes with our little boys! Cathy and George have thought of everything and are so gracious, helpful and friendly. I highly recommend their home.

A relaxing coastal vacation

Guest: D.P. Raspanti (Providence, Rhode Island )
Date of Stay: 10/22/08 Review Submitted: 01/20/09

Late last year, my girlfriend and I spent a few days at the Zadoc Brewster house in Rockland, Maine. I've visited Maine a lot over the years – I live down in Rhode Island – and was worried that Rockland might be as cluttered as Old Orchard Beach or as touristy as York. But the experience here was nothing short of invigorating – not a lot of crowds, beautiful scenery, great restaurants, and some great hikes within a ten minute drive. Better still was the house: the antique furniture was beautiful, and the kitchen perfectly appointed. We wanted to go out and eat the first night in Rockland, but we ended up with a bottle of wine and some home-cooked food back at the Brewster house. Plus, the caretakers, George and Cathy, were very helpful when it came to local activities. Unlike some B and B owners – you know the type – they left us mostly alone, but made themselves available when we needed them, and were always welcoming and friendly and kind. For anyone looking for the best scenery in coastal Maine, without the sweaty mobs of tourists, this is the place. Can't recommend Rockland highly enough: great galleries, bookstores, and coffee shops, and everything within a short walk from the Brewster house. P.S.: There's a very cute dog floating around the property – we ran into him a few times. Jake, I think his name was....

What a charming inn!

If I ever had an Inn, I'd want it to be like this one. It was such a nice place to stay during our visit to Rockland, which is a lovely town-no wonder Andrew Wyeth painted such beautiful pictures! The inn is also very nice to look at--filled with lots of beautiful woodwork, china and antiques. My favorite were the embroideries. And the innkeepers were lovely--made us feel right at home, yet delightfully away from home.

The House Is Just Wonderful

The house is just wonderful. My son adores it. He calls the back his wing so we both aren't on top of each other. I'm fascinated with all the beautiful needlepoint. We do love every inch of it. Separate bathrooms are a blessing.

A House That Feels Like A Home

Guest: T&MM (SC)

Thank you Lord for the craggy isles. Harbors, inlets and granite Maine. For waterways of a million miles. With foggy morns and days of rain. We loved every lobstah, clam 'n chowdah. And endless places to which to roam. Thanks to George and Cathy. We saw it from a house that feels like a home.

We had a wonderful visit. The house is beautiful and proved to be in a great location for visiting our daugher at Alford Lake Camp in Hope. The sea breeze was a fabulous change from the dry mountain air of Colorado! Thanks so much.
