Troubling Experience at Hidden Glidden

The cottage itself was fine, generally clean with the exception of the screened-in porch. The kitchen's set of post-and-pans are only adequate for the most basic cooking. But overall, the residential location was fine and the property has nice outdoor space, though it's a hike to the water's edge. The description of the cottage listed on the site contained the usual effort to upsell a modest home (i.e. an acceptable level of exaggeration), with the exception of the term "luxury" which was a bit of a stretch --only worth a few chuckles to me and my companion until shoddy tilework in the bathroom led to a soap dish literally coming apart in my hand and falling into the bath. Despite my immediate notification to the owner and what seemed to be a polite conversation, the owner decided to take advantage of the situation and tacked bogus charges for damage that neither I, my companion, nor any of my coworkers who gathered around my desk could actually see in his "photo evidence." After receiving increasingly ugly emails from the owner, I just told him I'd send him a check to be done with it, which I did the very next day. Imagine my shock when I found he also started charging my credit card without my permission. The entire incident is worrisome and a true shame, because while the property is theoretically nice enough to rent again, it's simply out of the question for obvious reasons. I have rented several properties in the area before with no problems whatsoever. Troubling!
Owner response:Our track record of returning the Damage/Breakage Deposit over a period of eight years is that once we have kept the entire amount, due to a guest burning our garage, and this time, we kept part of it only to cover the actual cost of the repairs necessitated after this guest vacated the cottage. The responsibility for damage that occurs during a guests stay is clearly stated in our rental agreement, which was signed by this guest, and it was stated that this financial responsibility was to be taken from the Deposit, which was provided in the form of a credit card. This guest also removed the Guest Book, which we had to call to follow up on and was then returned to us. We have rented to litterally hundreds of guests over the past eight years and never had one who tried to shirk responsibility for damage that they caused. If other Owners read this and want to avoid a situation like this, please contact me.

My wife and I bought my parents a weekend at the Hidden Glidden Cottage as a gift for their 40th wedding anniversary. They absolutely loved this place! The cottage is in a secluded area across from Lake Michigan. Even though are plenty of things to do around Sturgeon Bay, my parents said they stayed in at the cottage on two of the nights because it was so relaxing. They grilled out and walked to the beach. If you want a great meal out, the Glidden Lodge is right down scenic Glidden Road, which they enjoyed on their 3rd night. My parents raved about the Hidden Glidden Cottage. I think I'll rent the place for my wife and I in the future. Finally, the owner, Kevin, was as easy to deal with as anyone I've ever dealt with. Thanks for showing my parents a great time and thanks for making it easy for me!!!
Owner response:Tim, we are so glad your parents enjoyed the cottage! Thanks for letting us know. We would love to welcome you and your wife as well as your parents for a visit anytime!

Off the beaten path, this cottage was perfect for our family vacation. It's a short walk to the beach with all the comforts of home. The screened in porch is perfect for reading and relaxing or just listening to the sounds of nature. It's about a 10 minute drive into Sturgeon Bay and located in a residential area. It's clean and comfortable - highly recommended! We felt at home immediately and would definitely stay here again. Downside: One crabby neighbor on the lake side who kicked us off his private beach. No big deal, there are plenty of beaches in Door County.
Owner response:Kelly, Thank you very much for this wonderful review. We hope to have you and your party as our guests again in the future!
