Accommodations:  House, 7 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 5.5 Baths (Sleeps 22-24)

Inside the barn you will find a magnificent two-sided stone fireplace, spacious new granite kitchen and dining area complete with cozy fireside sitting area and pizza oven, stocked pantry, library stacked with books, DVDs and games for all ages, a media room complete with wet bar, Foose ball table, Sony Playstation and giant flat screen. An observatory complete with wooden inlaid compass, 360 degree views and crow's nest awaits you at the top of the stone silo. A favorite spot for star-gazers.

Two master suites are situated upstairs on the main living floor. Downstairs are two guest rooms with shared bath, another junior suite and two bunkrooms with Jack & Jill bath.

This is a much loved and well cared for property. A real gem. It has proven to be an excellent spot for weddings and big events - a big white tent looks lovely on the lawn.

The stone Milk House is available during summer and fall for additional fee. It is literally a milk and ice house renovated into an adorable one bedroom cottage with full kitchen, sitting room with sleeper sofa and full bath. Very sweet.

Also for overflowing guests, my parents George and Linda West are innkeepers and live next door - they have just completed renovating Sunapee View B&B with three beautiful guest suites. My mother is a gourmet cook and caters some truly amazing food that will make your mouth water.

A short history of Well Sweep's stone barn...
This historic stone barn was architected by Prentice Sanger and built by Clarence Hay in the early 1900's. This was originally part of the John Hay Estate; Hay served as Abraham Lincoln's Personal Secretary and Teddy Roosevelt's Secretary of State. The property is adjacent to The Fells, a rambling maze of hiking trails that culminates at the Hay Estate where acres of gorgeous flowers and gardens and meadows are enjoyed by all who visit.

In 2003 we purchased this 7,000 square foot barn and converted it into a truly luxurious home. The property is lovely - 5 acres of sunken courtyard, meadow, lawn, woods, patios and tennis court. This is a wonderful place for children and families.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2003

I'm Vanessa Gobes. My husband Michael and I live just north of Boston. We have 4 kids ages 17, 5, 3 and 8 months (girl girl girl boy). Michael works in finance and I own a small sportswear label - though these days I'm primarily taking care of my little ones.

Why the Owner Chose Newbury

Sunapee is exactly 90 minutes from Boston and is a stunning area on a pristine lake peppered with quaint harbors and a wonderful family ski mountain. Additionally there are numerous challenging mountains within driving distance including most of the big guns in Vermont. This region is not over-commercialized like Winnepesauke. Sunapee is a special little corner of the world with sophisticated residents who love peace, nature and New England charm.

The Unique Benefits of this House

The range of outdoor activities is superb and the home is breathtaking. You could stay indoors all week and cook, drink wine, enjoy the fireplace, star gaze, sit on the deck, sneak up to the observatory, read great books... and still not feel trapped or bored. Outside is amazing and full of wonderful spots to explore - without even leaving the yard! Relax and forget about the world for awhile!
