Owner Description

The Homestead was originally built by Cyrus Goulter in 1883. His son Charles raised a large family at Hawkesbury and was famous for breeding Merino sheep. The property remained in the Goulter family for over a hundred years. My husband and I bought the property some years ago and have extensively renovated it so that it is now back to its full splendour and available for guests to enjoy.

Perfect Wine Country Getaway

Guest: DS (Mountain View, CA)
Date of Stay: 02/19/11 Review Submitted: 09/28/11

Three of us stayed here in the middle of a two-week tour of New Zealand. The overall trip was packed with all kinds of activities and excitement. However, my favorite part of the trip was relaxing at Hawkesbury House. The kitchen is wonderful, the patio is a delightful retreat, and the neighboring vineyards are fantastic. LInda and Charlie are extremely gracious hosts, and we thoroughly enjoyed their company on the first night of our stay. If you stay here, you will not be disappointed.

Great for Family, Friends and Business

Date of Stay: 03/10/11 Review Submitted: 04/03/11

Six of us used the Hawkesbury Homestead for a long weekend the back-end of a business trip in Sydney. The night we arrived, Charlie and Lynda greeted us with some of their local wine (First Landing, the Sauvingnon Blanc, was sensational) and a cheese plate that were over the top. Making the evening more special was the great conversation we enjoyed with our hosts. The next day we went fly fishing in gin clear water (you could drink the water right from the stream) and finished up the night telling stories in front of the fire place at the Homestead. The following day, we had a leisurely outdoor lunch at a local winery followed by some touring and tasting of the local wines (fantastic reds and whites). Inspired by the local wine, we played tennis before settling in for dinner. Again, we ended by telling stories in front of the fire. For us, this was the best business trip ever. But it easily could have been the best couples weekend, boys weekend, girls weekend or family getaway. We highly recommend the Hawkesbury Homestead if you want to get away and be surrounded by vineyards and nature. Yet, it's just 15 minutes from the airport and downtown Blenheim. Five Stars!

Honeymoon in Marlborough

Guest: Brooke and Mac (Denver, Colorado, USA)
Date of Stay: 11/19/10 Review Submitted: 02/16/11

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon in November 2010. It was a dream for both of us. Beautiful wine country, lovely historic home and the amazing owners (Lynda and Charlie)... made it a dream vacation for both of us. It is so peaceful and the gardens are stunning. We spent hours on the patio watching the birds; other days we took the bikes out for rides to the vineyards. If you want to stay in a beautiful home in a prime location this house is perfect for you.

A wonderful gem in Marlborough!

My husband & I spent a week at the Hawkesbury Homestead and loved it! Lyndia and Charlie Kelly greeted us on a rainy Saturday afternoon with a beautiful dinner and a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. A perfect way to start our first visit to New Zealand. As we shared dinner with Lyndia and Charlie we began to unwind as we looked out the picture window of the rolling hills with horses running and playing while the rain came down and made a wonderful sound on the tin roof. As I expressed to our host and hostess it was a magical moment one that you would read about in a novel! We are avid readers! Hawkesbury Homestead is a beautiful 4 bedroom home from the 1800’s and one of the first homesteads in Marlborough. It is right in wine country so you can walk or ride bikes to the local wineries. Bikes and helmets are provided. The homestead has been re-modeled for comfort and function. A big kitchen that is fully supplied for enjoying meals at home, outside BBQ for hanging by your private pool or sitting on the back or front porch enjoying breakfast, lunch or dinner with a nice New Zealand wine. If you enjoy playing tennis then there is a private tennis court that looks out to the vineyards and rolling hills. We stayed in the master bedroom downstairs that looked out on the vineyards and we enjoyed the 4 poster king bed, fireplace, updated master bathroom with claw tub for soaking! My husband and I spent our nights (after wine tasting and exploring all day) in front of a huge roaring fire (there are 3 fireplaces in the home) in the sitting room at the front of the house while reading and having a glass of wine. Also, in the front sitting room you will find many brochures, maps and information for things to do and see around Marlborough. Lyndia and Charlie were always available to answer questions. We only used the first floor since it was just the two of us but this home would be perfect for a family get together or for friends who like to travel together. In addition to the downstairs Master there are 3 spacious bedrooms upstairs with bathrooms and one of the bedrooms has a full porch for you to sit and enjoy the view of the vineyards. Owning a wine shop & tasting room, we are constantly searching for new wines and therefore we usually stay at a working winery or private home. We would highly recommend Hawkesbury as a place to explore wine country, unwind, re-kindle/re-charge your relationship or as a gathering place! Thank you Lyndia & Charlie!

Wonderful Marlborough Experience!

Guest: DG-USA (San Francisco, CA USA)
Date of Stay: 02/28/10 Review Submitted: 03/27/10

Our group of seven adults had a wonderful stay at the Homestead in the Marlborough Wine Country. The house was a perfect way to enjoy the local experience... right in the wine country and close to all the vineyards. The rooms were well appointed and in great shape. Our hosts, Lynda Marie and her husband Charlie were very attentive to our needs and helped us with planning our daily adventures. Their suggestion to prepare dinner for us the first night we arrived was not only a wonderful meal, but also a perfect way to meet them and learn more about the local area. We would not change a thing. We all enjoyed ourselves and would plan to return again soon. The only comments we could add to help improve the experience would be to correct the banner ad for this unit to acknowledge there are 3.5 baths, not 4.5 available to the renters. Also, window coverings on the ground floor bathroom would help to provide more privacy. These are minor issues and in no way detracted from our overall exoerience. We look forward to our next visit.
