One of the best snorkeling beaches on the island is only a few miles south of Kona Reef. KaHalu’u Beach Park lets you get up close and personal with the Green Sea Turtles (protected don’t touch) and a large variety of tropical fish. Some of our favorite places to go are: • Kona Farmers' market - downtown Kona, Wed – Sun. • Hilo Farmers' market - Wed., & Sat. only • Akaka Falls near Hilo • Waipio Valley (need 4 wheel drive if you actually go down into the valley – nice overlook for those like me that go for the view) • Volcano National Park • Hapuna Beach Park & many other beautiful beaches • Several Kona Coffee Plantations, if you enjoy coffee • Macademian nut farms • Waikaloa Village shopping center • South Point, the southernmost point in the US • There are several historical sites on Alii Street alone For eateries: • Bite Me for fresh Seafood • Costco, lots of local food items • Kona Inn Restaurant • Huggo's • Volcano House • Mrs. Barry's Kona Cookies My favorite activity is to pick up some good steak or seafood, grill it on the gas grills located near the pool at Kona Reef and sit back and eat on the Lanai of our unit, relaxing and watching the waves, surfers, boats, dolphins and other marine life....morecollapse

We rented this unit through VRBO. Bruce, the owner, was very helpful and provided all the information needed without us having to ask. The people at Kona Reef were also friendly and were more than happy to answer our questions about the Kona Reef complex and local attractions. The condo was just as advertised and the pictures on the VRBO web site were very accurate. The unit came fully stocked with all the needed paper goods for the time we were there. Swim gear (boogie board, snorkeling gear, towels) were also provided. The lanai over looks the ocean and we especially enjoyed sitting out there, having breakfast and watching the surfers and the occasional sea turtle. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to rent this unit again.

We just returned from a two week trip for our 35th wedding anniversary where we stayed in two different condos. The first week was spent at Bruce and Karrie's Kona Reef condo. The condo was clean and well-stocked, which we appreciated even more after arriving at our condo on Maui and finding it fairly limited in supplies. A-26 was very well stocked and I liked that there were some things left from previous renters (interesting jams, some coconut syrup, etc...). The AC worked great and kept the entire unit cool, along with the ceiling fans. We love our AC, but actually had to do without one night due to a power outage all through Kailua-Kona. The unit actually was quite pleasant, even without the AC. The bed and couch were very comfortable. Everything in the kitchen worked great and the washer and dryer worked really well for a stackable pair. There were 6 beach towels, which was great and a large pile of nice extra towels in the closet. It was great to have the safe in the closet as well. The view from this unit is incredible and we so enjoyed eating out there on the lanai. It is very private, as you are on the 3rd floor and we found the unit to be very quiet and peaceful. It is difficult to hear anything other than the wonderful surf. A few thoughts for improvement: adding 1 other comfortable place to sit in the living room, a couple of lounge chairs for the lanai, and maybe updating a little. But everything was cared for, comfortable and clean- just not fancy... All in all, we had a wonderful time and a great experience renting from Bruce and Karrie. They were very kind and flexible with us and that was very appreciated. The Kona Reef complex is incredibly well cared for. There are 4 grills, which are maintained to perfection. Each day they are made to look new again! We loved the pool and hot tub and the chairs out by the ocean were great at sunset and in the mornings. We usually bought food and ate in the condo because it was so easy to grill and enjoy the view from there. But we did walk down to Huggos on the Beach one night and really enjoyed our drinks and meals there. We also ate breakfast at Bongos and that was very good as well. I would highly recommend doing the manta ray night snorkel- we went with Captain Jack's and they were fine. It was an amazing experience! We enjoyed snorkeling at Kahalu'u beach, although it can be crowded and getting there early is important

Thank you for sharing your lovely condo with us. We absolutely loved sitting on the lanai listening to the waves crash against the shore, watching the sea turtles in the tidal pools and the surfers waiting to catch the perfect wave. The kitchen was well stocked which was a nice surprise and in-suite laundry and Wifi connection was great. The Kona Reef is well maintained with a great oceanfront pool and BBQ area and the location is perfect, easy walk to town and the main road is designed for runners and walkers, loved my morning runs! A26 is far enough from the road that you can't hear any traffic and oceanfront for a fabulous view, you can't get any better than that. The whole process from booking to payment to getting the key was seamless. Mahalo until next time. Tina and Herb

This is our 2nd time staying in this condo - we absolutely love it. Everything you need is supplied (and plenty of backup supplies in the closets). The washing machine/dryer is a godsend. We love being right on the ocean - I pass by other condos and feel sorry for them when they are across the street or have no ocean view. This is truly oceanfront. We saw lots of whales, love walking to town and jogging each morning and then having breakfast on the lanai. We hope to come back again.

This was our 3rd time to the Big Island of Hawaii and our 3rd time staying at a condo at the Kona Reef. Bruce && Karrie's condo was the best one we have stayed at. Everything was there!!!!!!! On our way to the condo we stopped and purchased paper products, cleaning supplies and Tide. All of these items are usually not in abundance by the condo owners. However, everything we needed for our stay was there. What a wonderful surprise! We spent all of our mornings looking out over the ocean and watching the Green Sea Turtles in the sea in front of the condo. It was the best vacation we had ever had on the Big Island. The communication was excellent. The property manager was great also. We hope to enjoy this condo again on our next vacation to Hawaii. The island is so large and there is always so much to do. Or you can just relax on the balcony of this condo. Also, you can walk to Kona by using a path that goes straight from the Kona Reef to town for shopping and eating. Julie & Larry Rice Camarillo, CA

We stayed at the condo in Kailua for our honeymoon and we had such a great time! The details that were most important to me when picking a place to stay was it's distance from the ocean, bugs, and air conditioning. I am so happy to say that I was very happily content with each of these categories. The condo is right on the water. We could almost feel the spray from the waves below our lanai. The air conditioning was awesome at keeping us Alaskans comfortable and there were no bugs to be seen anywhere while we were there. We visited Kailua often at all different times of the day and we did use the pool a couple times. The location of the condo was just perfect for us. We rented a jeep and explored all over the island. We swam with some dolphins out at the Kekaha Kai Beach Park. We saw a monk seal out at the Whittington Beach Park and had a romantic swim at a deserted pool with it's own mini waterfall off the scenic route just north of Hilo. The gear at the condo provided us with everything we needed to do all the activities that we wanted to do. We are very happy and definitely will come back.

We enjoyed a month in this lovely Kona home and plan on returning for a longer stay next time. The location, the view, the amenities, the support from the local manager all combine to make B$K's Kona Reef an ideal place to vacation. We particularly enjoyed the musical opportunities for listening and for playing. Peter & Linda

The pictures are a true reflection of this condo, everything is as you see. The views from the large lanai cannot be beat. Your able to view whales, dolphins, turtles as well as the local surfers. In walking distance to Kona's famous waterfront with lots of restaurants and shopping, many restaurants with the beautiful views as well, there is all price ranges to choose from. We rented this property for three weeks and it worked very well for us. I'm sure it would as well for shorter stays. The washer and dryer within unit is a great plus for extended stays like ours.

Hi, this is the perfect place for a romantic and restful getaway! The condo is well kept and stocked with everything you need to exist from cooking to laundry facilities. The highlight though, is the balcony. You are on the second floor just 20 feet from the oceanside where the waves role in, the turtles sun on the rocks and you can see porpoises and the occassional whale through the binos. We spent every morning having coffee watching the day arrive and just about every evening watching the day close out with a beautiful sunset in the eastern sky. It's about a 7 minute walk to the south end of the tourist area along Alii Drive where there is an abundance of restaurants, shops, etc. In the bigger picture, you are well situated to explore the northern, southern and central island by car. The complex is on the smaller side so it is quiet and the other tenants were friendly. The pool looked a little smaller than usual but we were having such a good time with other things that we never bothered with any pool time. All in all, I don't know what could be added to make this place any better - a great location and friendly, courteous owners. We'd definately stay here again, mahalo, R & K.

                  Year Purchased: 2009

About the owner: Bruce & Karrie Ahrendt.. Currently living in Salem, Oregon where Bruce retired from the BLM and Karrie from the State of Oregon. We're both very involved with activities at church and in the building and now operation of a Community Hall in South Salem. Karrie is originally from Mililani, Hi on the island of Oahu. After 30+ years she's slowly making her way back to Hawaii.

Why the Owner Chose Kona Reef:
We chose the Big Island for it's more relaxed/laid back atmosphere, not to mention the many activities available on the Big Island. Kona Reef Condos was the logical choice for a vacation rental location. Easy access to the entire Big Island as well as easy walking distance to downtown Kailua, Kona (it's shops, restaurants and Farmer's Market), as well as the beaches and other activities along Alii Drive.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
Kona Reef complex comes with a well maintained Jacuzzi and salt water swimming pool, gas grills and a central outdoor dining area with free wifi. Our unit is located right on the ocean front. The lanai lets you enjoy relaxing or eating while watching the surfers, sea turtles, whales and spinner dolphins or possibly just a front row seat for the Hawaiian sunset. We try and make our place feel a bit more like a home than just someplace you would rent to stay in. We provide those little extras like snorkle gear, a cooler, beach chairs, beach umbrella, sunscreen, boogie boards, even a pair of binoculars to get a better view of the ships as they sail past. For those needing internet access we have a private, secured wifi router for use inside our unit or on the lanai.
