Why the Owner Chose Sunapee
Hemlock Harbor has been in the family since 1957. We never intended to rent the property but can not live there full time yet and want to share it with others who will appreciate it (and to pay the outrageously high property taxes!)
The Unique Benefits of this House
Hemlock is a marvelous place to relax, gather with family and friends, write/paint/create (27 books were written here) and play. The Great Room is the gathering place inside with a huge table and benches for eating, playing cards, visiting or working on a project in front of the fire or looking out over the Lake. Player piano and marimba provide lively entertainment if you don't want to watch Cable or just read in the seating area. Five bedrooms provide plenty of space; there are seating areas and desks in most.
There is limited access to the pristine class "A" waters of Lake Sunapee and very few properties with 550' of shoreline in a quiet cove. We can see neighbors' docks but no other houses. Winter is magical whether there is snow over the ice for cross country skiing and skidooing or clear for skating. It's a magical place, charming, not flashy or modern but with what a person really needs available.
Consider an off season retreat with family or friends. Facilitate a retreat for writers, scrabble players, kayakers, photographers. Proprietor available to prepare meals for groups if pre-arranged.

With Hurricane Irene bearing down on New England, it wasn't at all clear that our planned vacation on Sunapee would work out...but we ended up with a perfect week of weather, in as an idyllic a spot as you can find on the Big Lake, tucked in the back of a quiet cove with a long water view out through the channel and Mt. Sunapee in the distance. You can see how the house survived the 1938 hurricane. Swimming was great for the kids (lots to explore in the rocky waters), the dock accomodated the power boat (tho some navigation in the rocky channel is needed...), the entertainment areas of the house wonderful for us and the friends who visited, house large enough to provide quiet spaces when needed, and the four plus acres around the house make it very private indeed. The Youngs are interesting/interested people and perfect hosts...Greg stayed in the carriage house next door during the hurricane to make sure all was well, and Mary a wealth of information on the pedigree of the old house and the surrounding area. We'll be back....
Owner response:It's wonderful to have guests who appreciate watching a hurricane blow by from our three season porch! The following week of sunshine was ample reward for the day of rain, but Hemlock Harbor has always seemed to be a place where it is comforting to "hunker in" and read, play cards around the big table or just relax. We are delighted to have guests who appreciate the special qualities of our quiet, rocky harbor and the details of a home that has heard a lot of music and laughter.
Recommended for:People with disabilities, girls getaway, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers.

We have been coming to Hemlock Harbor with our extended family for a number of years now. We have enjoyed our time here more and more every year. All members of our family, from babies to grandparents, have enjoyed spending time at this wonderful house. The house is spacious and overflowing with charm. The master bedroom is large and has its own access to the deck overlooking the lake. Everyone morning we would wake up to a picturesque view of the lake out our window. There is a large porch on the back of the house with a table that had room for our whole family. There is another large table in the great room in front of a beautiful stone fireplace, which was a great place for games in evening. The kitchen is well stocked with whatever you need. There is a large pantry and two refrigerators which is wonderful when feeding a large group. The location is fabulous. It is located on a quiet cove that is perfect for kayaking, swimming or just relaxing. They have a great dock, with room to tie up our power boat and canoe. The house is located at lake level, not that common on Lake Sunapee, which makes it easy for the youngest and oldest members of the family to access the water. The property is very private making you feel that you almost have the lake to yourself. The house is located not from Sunapee Harbor. My sister and I enjoyed many early morning walks along the lake to the Harbor. Finally, Lucy and Greg are wonderful hosts. They go out of their way to make you feel at home in their house and truly seem to enjoy sharing their little bit of paradise with others.
Owner response:It has been a delight to share Hemlock Harbor with extended families. Each year we meet sisters and brothers, new little ones and members of the older generations. Family vacations seem to work well here because there are places to gather and enough space to have time away from one another. We appreciate our returning renters and welcome new people who will appreciate our home and the beauties of Lake Sunapee as much as we do!
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, people with disabilities, sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers.
