Light pours into this large, modern house on the spectacular rural road that was once the home of noted poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. Take a walk up quiet East Hill Road to her house, now a writing colony, or walk up a wooded path from the house to a magnificent 1/2 acre swimming pond surrounded by wildlife, where you can swim in summer, look at spectacular foliage in fall or cross country ski and snow shoe into miles of woods in winter.
The house has multiple spaces to read and relax. Wi-Fi, DVD player, CD. Private spaces include two huge bedrooms with queen beds and skylights, a large den with a brand new queen sized pull out bed and a kids room with three twin beds. Common spaces include a huge open living room/dining room/kitchen with cathedral ceiling and a wall of windows, a sitting room and a large deck with table and grill.
This is a great house to get lost in. But if you want some excitement there's downhill skiing, a great cross country ski center and lots of hiking nearby.
And to top it off there's culture and fantastic restaurants just around the corner. We're only 20 minutes from Tanglewood and all the theatre and fine dining of the Berkshires. At a great price, you can have it all!.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1995
My sister and I grew up in New York City, but we always wanted to have a place where we could escape and just be in nature. We both fell in love with Columbia County. Before either of us got married or had kids we bought our house in Austerlitz together.
Why the Owner Chose Austerlitz
We love Columbia County because each area is more beautiful than the next. There are farms, mountains, woods. It's less than three hours from New York City and Boston, but it's quiet and laid back. It's totally not touristy but we're only 15 minutes from the Berkshires so we have all the culture and great restaurants we could want. Living in Brooklyn we wanted a location that felt really rural so we searched till we found a house on an unbuiltup dirt road, set back, so that we could have total privacy.
The Unique Benefits of this House
We loved the house as soon as we saw it because of the open living space with its cathedral ceiling and wood stove, plus the beautiful 16 acres the house sits on. Our dream was to build a pond which we did in 1997. 12 years later the 1/2 acre swimming pond with over an acre of cleared land around it, about 1/8 mile from the house, is spectacular. We sometimes can't believe it's ours. It's an amazing, magical space with frogs and dragon flies where our kids have learned to swim. Three years ago, we realized the house just wasn't big enough for our two families so we added a large extension, two huge new bedrooms with skylights and large windows, a sitting room with a bank of windows, lots of closets and a bathroom with skylight. The house is now really large with many spaces for a large group or two families like ours to find space and privacy.

What a great experience! We had an amazing time- everything was perfect. Deidre, the owner was great and really easy to work with! When we arrived it was exactly what we wanted. The house was in the middle of NATURE. The property that surrounded the house was beautiful. When we walked inside the house, we were delightfully surprised! The pictures honestly do not do it justice! The house was big and bright with a ton of windows, and a small wood burning oven. Big table (which was perfect for our group). On the main level there were 2 ENORMOUS bedrooms (honestly 4 people could easily fit in these rooms) and a huge den. It had an additional bedroom upstairs. All the bedrooms were beautiful (I had a hard time choosing which one I wanted to stay in) with big windows! Our favorite part of the stay was the pond that they built. The short walk to the pond is very much worth it- even if it’s just for the view! It’s a mini oasis (which is perfect for those who are coming from the city!) We WISHED it was summer- so we would be able to enjoy the space. Needless to say- we had a great time and even requested (immediately) to rent the house again! Definitely recommend!!
Owner response:We love our house, the pond and the unspoiled land that it sits on. Living most of the time in Brooklyn, it's an oasis for us to gather as a family and enjoy nature. It's wonderful to know that others enjoy it as much as we do! We welcome you and any questions you might have.
Recommended for:Adventure seekers, girls getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.
