Recent trip

Date of Stay: 03/30/12 Review Submitted: 04/11/12

The reviews are accurate, the garden is spectacular! We stayed in the rooms next to the main house and found it to be a very peaceful, quiet and relaxing place to stay. The kitchen equipment was clean and ample enough to fix breakfast and lunch. The gratuitous coffee was very good. Our rooms felt just like we were staying in a home (a very nice home) with good quality artwork fitting of the surroundings. Though the house is across the street from the beach access, we were close enough to the beach to hear the surf at high tide. This made a nice ambiance to a breakfast on the porch overlooking the garden. Waimanalo beach is my favorite beach in Hawaii and close enough to the house to make going back for stuff easy to do. We used to stay in a house right on the beach down the street but this house is so much better kept and comfortable. The location is convenient to Kailua and Hawaii Kai where we often spent much of our time doing water activities and other things. Indeed there is a climbing location very close which our family enjoyed. There are some very good restaurants in Hawaii Kai and Kailua which is just 15 minutes away. The owners are very pleasant and interesting but not intrusive. They were very accommodating and eager to make our stay enjoyable. We will definitely be going back to stay there the next time we visit Hawaii and I have already recommended it to a few friends.

Perfect place for a get away

Date of Stay: 03/18/12 Review Submitted: 03/26/12

We just returned from a week long stay at "Hale Ola Ohana". Everything was just as described. The room was clean, nicely decorated, and perfectly suited our needs. The location was wonderful - quiet and away from all the hustle and bustle of Honolulu and Wakiki - yet close enough to enjoy many great hikes, snorkeling at hanauma bay, or a drive to the north shore. The beach is only a very short walk away and it is very private and beautiful. Everything that we needed was there - beach chairs, umbrella, a grill, coolers, beach towels, boogie boards, etc. Having a love for animals, we really enjoyed Koa and George, the owner's two dogs. We enjoyed trying all of the small local restaurants in Waimanalo and really didn't find any that we didn't like. We hope to return again in the near future. Am not sure how anyone could be disappointed with a stay here!

Thank you for Sharing you lovely home with us. For us, it was the perfect location-away form the crowds and traffic, across the street from a beautiful beach and within a short scenic drive to everything we wanted to see and do. We loved it here and would highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to have a peaceful, relaxing, vacation in Oahu's southeast corner.

Not the place if you are looking for a romantic getaway!

Guest: VM (USA)
Date of Stay: 02/26/12 Review Submitted: 03/08/12

I do have to say the Garden was beautiful and the beach was a short walk away but there was no real privacy from the owners or the other guests so if you are looking for a getaway where you don't feel comfortable even talking in your room to you partner then by all means. I should also mention that the bathroom is a little too close to the sink used to wash dishes and prepare food, there were dog droppings in the yard (hard not to step in Yuck!!!) and the owners were inattentive and were unprofessional. My suggestion, skip this place and stay in a private cabin or go to a hotel.

Owner response:We are sorry your stay wasn't everything you expected. When we checked you in, we had told you to let us know if you need or want anything which included any concerns you might have. When Rick checked in with you midway through your stay, you said everything was great. In response to specifics in your review. You are the first guests that have complained about the set up of the room and your privacy. The photos of the room on the website demonstrate the set up of the room so most people are aware of the set up when they book. At no time, can we hear our guests in their rooms. As far as dog droppings, we make every effort to do our pick up rounds every morning and whenever we see droppings. We apologize that we weren't able to get to it before you left in the morning. Being inattentive and unprofessional is not who we are....we gear our interactions with guests based on whether they are approachable and appear to want their privacy. We feel you wanted your privacy, so we kept our distance to ensure you had your privacy. This is a case where you can't please everyone and sorry we weren't able to please you. Hoping for Happier Times for you and your new Husband.

A private, relaxing wonderful anniversary experience

Guest: Mike (Iliamna, Alaska)
Date of Stay: 01/17/12 Review Submitted: 02/06/12

My husband and I spent 6 nights at Above and Beyond. It was the most relaxing vacation we have ever had. Rick and Tammy could not be more accommodating. We stayed in the Pineapple room and found it to be very comfortable. The massage chair in the common room is AMAZING! They provided everything we needed to enjoy the beach (towels, chairs, umbrella, snorkel gear) They had small coolers we could take with us on our daily adventures. We also took the afternoon sailing excursion with Rick and Tammy and had a blast. The boat is very stable in the water and we enjoyed a wonderful steak dinner on the boat. We would have done the glider excursion too, but ran out of time. The location is perfect! We went to many of the beaches around Oahu and found Waimanalo beach to be the best. The amazing part is it is two minutes from your room. What more could you ask for? The community was quiet and we had the beach almost to ourselves. We definately want to come back and bring our kids. Thank you Rick and Tammy for a wonderful time!

Date of Stay: 12/13/11 Review Submitted: 01/19/12

Most important, Rick and Tami were delightful, always available and helpful from beginning to end! The house and gates and grounds were beautiful, (and the story behind them is amazing). The lovely room and veranda was very adequate and efficient: great comfy bed, "kitchen/bath" was clever, and worked really fine. We used the massage chair almost every night! Dogs George and Koa were nice and friendly. Easy access to the long secluded beach, with good snorkling short drive away. We liked groceries from Down To Earth health food store in Kailua. On several day trips we saw most of the island. We definitly recommend Waimanalo if prefer low-key over big city.

Not what we were hoping for but it worked

Guest: Rayna (Kaneohe)
Date of Stay: 11/10/11 Review Submitted: 12/07/11

My husband and I needed a place to our bridal party to get ready at for our marriage on 11/11/11. We loved the location (less than half mile from our ceremony and reception) and appreciated the B&B advertisement. When we first arrived I think we caught Tamy of guard as another couple checked in the same time. The house and grounds are impeccably beautiful. Rick is an amazing host too. Our only draw back was we are smokers. We had to walk not only out of the property (law is 20ft from public assess) and outside of the property is more than 20ft. But not only did Tamy ask us to walk outside the gate we were also requested to walk across the street and aroung the corner to avoid any possible wind carrying our smoke into the gated house. We also did not get our B&B which we kinda was hoping for. However overall Ricks hospitality was very warm and welcoming it was worth our stay and I would recommend this place for a nice relaxing and charming stay.

Owner response:Rayna, Sorry your stay wasn't everything you wanted it to be. We do try to make every attempt to accommodate you so would recommend us to others. I want to apologize for not being clearer in our designated smoking areas as it just outside the 2 gates on the North side of house instead of the one gate on the front side of the house. Regarding your breakfast, we had done away with our breakfasts due to availability of our time and we accidentally forgot to fulfill our commitment with your breakfast. I have sent you a refund and hope you feel we will go out of our way to show we care about you and opinions of us. Aloha, Tamy

Beautiful B&B

Date of Stay: 09/07/11 Review Submitted: 09/27/11

We stayed at Rick & Tamy's for 10 days and felt at home the moment we arrived. Rick showed us our accomodations and was very informative with the local attractions and restaurants. We were already familiar with the area because my son lived two blocks away and it was my second time visiting Hawaii but my husband's first. The grounds are nothing short of spectacular. We addopted Koa, their dog, as our new roomate. I spent my some of my mornings walking to the beach, which is just across the street, to watch the sunrise. I've been to many beaches in Puerto Rico and in Hawaii and Waimanalo Beach is one of my top choices. It's not crowded, very peaceful and spectacular. Some of my very best pictures are of Waimanalo Beach. Rick and Tamy have thought of everything you might need for your stay, from beach chairs and beach umbrellas, beach towels, coffee, tea, anything for non motorized water sports and even dish soap. Tamy is a sweetheart and always available for any inquiry you might have. I highly recommend eating at Sweet Home Waimanalo for organic wholesome food (try their blackbean burger or any of their smoothies). We are seasoned travelers and have experienced the worst and the best in accomodations, this B&B is at the top of our list and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place to destress and reconnect with nature. I would definately stay there again.

The perfect island retreat if you are looking to get out of the bustle of Honolulu/Waikiki. Location is close enough to any attraction for a nice drive, yet we were in a peaceful, idyllic spot just across from a fabulous beach. The accommodations were extremely comfortable and glorious. The gardens? Outstanding. Rick and Tamy are gracious, generous caregivers, responding to every question or need. Thanks again for an amazing vacation!

Perfection! We never wanted to leave!

Guest: Waimanalo Fan (Orangevale, CA)
Date of Stay: 03/13/11 Review Submitted: 04/27/11

We thoroughly enjoyed our 10 day stay at this beautiful Waimanalo Beach vacation rental. This entire property is beautiful. Our room was comfortable, immaculate, private and serene. Rick and Tamy were the ideal hosts... friendly, informative, available when needed, but never intrusive. While the room we chose was just a bit small, the lanai and living room made the overall stay quite comfortable. Next time we will choose the larger room, though. Everything was provided for our comfort, from beach towels, snorkel gear, boogie boards, beach chairs and mats, a bookcase filled with books all about the islands, particularly Oahu, including the great Oahu Revealed guide book, to all of the kitchen needs as well as shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. My husband's favorite thing was the massage chair in the living room! And the beach! Oh my gosh, what a spectacular and uncrowded beach just a few yards from the house...a person could not make up a nicer beach! Though the town is small, there are good places to eat and shop, including Serge's, a good Mexican restaurant (byob if you want a beer with your meal) and Dave's Ice Cream shop. There is a nearby grocery store. Waimanalo is very conveniently located, not too far from Honolulu, but it feels like it is further away because it is so peaceful...it is a beautiful and easy 10 minute or so drive to Hawaii Kai and Portlock, about the same to Kailua and Lanikai, and maybe 15-20 minutes to Waikiki. Close to great hikes (Koko Head, Makapuu) and less than an hour to North Shore. If you like, you can catch The Bus to many Oahu destinations. Tamy and Rick were gracious hosts who thought of every detail for the comfort and enjoyment of their guests. We will definitely return to this piece of paradise! I would gladly recommend Hale Ola Ohana.

Waimanalo Beach B & B #263629

Absolutely delightful place. Beautiful, relaxing with generous, kind and knowledgeable owners. This experience continues to confirm our enjoyment and choice of a good B & B with an interesting, home like atmosphere over an impersonal, large hotel. Renting a car is a must so that you can get to the B & B and then travel to the various places and activities on the island (all are doable with various day trips). We would recommend Hale Ola a me Ohana to others and be happy to return there ourselves.

everything about haleolaohana is outstanding..Rick and Tammy the owners strike just the right balance between warmth and helpfulness and leaving you with privacy..the plantation house is .beautiful..the white sandy beach across the street ,6-8 miles long must be soen to be believed.. we would see maybe 20=40 people a day..a stunning coastal drive gets you to honululu..if you so desire..Kailua about 15 minutes away also has an amazing beach ,plenty of good restaurants, etc. The price for the accomadation is more than fair..we would go back in a heartbeat

We experienced what a romantic, quiet vacation should be, while here in Waimanalo. It was the 2nd part of our stay on Oahu, as we opted to stay our first 2 nights in Waikiki. How I wish we would've added additional nights here in this perfect little getaway! The owners really did think of every detail needed to make us feel right at home. Gracious and considerate. Beautiful home, pretty grounds, friendly doggies too :). The quiet and beautiful beach is literally footsteps away. It was very hard to leave such a amazing place. Rick and Tamy, thank you so much for allowing my husband and I to retreat in your very own home. We so enjoyed the fresh breakfasts too! mmm, papaya, pineapple, pears, fresh berries like no other! We hope to return one day....sooner than later!! Mahalo and may God bless you both. We cannot imagine a better getaway. Rick and Tammy have thought of everything and are such gracious hosts. The hospitality was beyond compare. If you are into staying at a tourist resort, than this place is not for you. If, however, you like to stay at a place that allows you to enjoy the company and vibe of locals then this is the place to be. Steps away from the beach, they have all of the equipment that you could possibly want to enjoy your Hawaii island paradise - kayaks, boogie boards, snorkeling gear. We will definitely be back.

The location is amazing, just steps from the beach, and this is a true paradise. We are a local couple that got married in Waimanalo and we've seen a lot of great beach houses, but what sets this home apart is that you will feel genuinely comfortable and "home" the minute you enter the gate. The surroundings are amazing, the facilities are perfect, and Tammy and Rick complete the package by extending true aloha. And, the bed is so luxurious. Breakfast is delicious. The beach is super close. What more could anyone need?

My husband and I spent our 8 day honeymoon here. Rick and Tamy were so hospitable! fresh, delicious breakfast every morning.. lots of Hawaiian fruits! they provided us with snorkel gear, boogie boards, maps and lots of knowledge about local things to do. Rick took us on his glider plane, too! beautiful views of the North Shore (mountains and beach, all in one!) he has a sailboat that we were going to go out on but the day we planned it, it was bad weather. One of the best things about this location is the seclusion.. I've talked to many people who stayed in Honolulu or Waikiki during their hawaiian visit and complained about how crowded the beaches were (and everything else). This B&B felt like what Hawaii should feel like.. and we were pretty much the only people on the beach at all times! which I couldn't believe because it is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen! everything was truly perfect and we sooooooo cannot wait to go back!

First off we would like to thank Ricky and Tammy for the amazing stay. The hospitaly was perfect and sealed the deal for us. We enjoyed all of the activities they took us on. From the sail plane,to the sail boat and snorkeling in between. The lighthouse was beautiful and being able to see the live sea turtles in their own environment was breath taking! We have never experienced something this relaxing and would recommend it to be a number one vacationing spot.(In fact we already have!!!) The bed alone was worth the travel from California! The room included everything we needed, it felt like a home away from home. We had such a memorial time that we are planing to return again this time next year. They are awesome host and made us feel welcome and like we were a part of their family. This trip has been something to definitely write home about. We enjoyed a one hour massage here locally and it to was the best yet! The beach access was very convent and easy to get to for the morning sunrise and cup of coffee, we got to have daily. If you are looking for an amazing get away this is IT! Sincerely and Aloha Rod and Georgette Redding California (Aug.8th-Aug.14th)

this place is great...it's so close to the beach (basically walk across the street to the public path to the beach). the bedroom is a nice size, and there is this bonus room that separates the bedroom from the rest of the house (where the owners live). Rick and Tamy are super nice, and they do their best to help make your stay a pleasant one. i enjoyed hanging out on the front porch (that's kinda where the wireless internet works best...yup, had to work a bit....) and hanging with their cool pets (2 dogs and a cat....totally mellow and they stay out of your way if you're not into animals, but i enjoyed having them around). definitely worth staying here!

Waimanalo Beach is Paradise

Guest: Cook (Arlington Heights, IL, USA)
Date of Stay: 06/09/10 Review Submitted: 06/21/10

Whenever you take a vacation trip there is naturally some concern going in that it may not meet expectations. We quickly appreciated that there was no reason for worry. This property is gorgeous, the location fantastic, and the proprietors gracious, friendly and helpful. Even the dogs, George and Koa, seem to add to the ambiance. Everything is new, clean and modern. The B&B is less than a two hundred walk to the crystal clear Pacific Ocean, so you can start each day watching the sun rise while fishing, jogging along one of the most pristine and private beaches you will ever see, catching an invigorating morning swim or simply sitting in silence marveling at the beauty that surrounds you. On your return back to the property, fresh native fruit and pastry items await you. I also recommend night walks on the beach under the moon and stars. Very romantic. If you are a sightseer, you are truly in paradise. If you are looking for activities and adventures, opportunity abounds. Snorkeling, scuba, surfing (body and board), kayaking, hang gliding, ocean fishing and boat rides are all available within a few minutes by car. Waikiki is only 40 minutes away, and time flies by as you are transfixed by the abundant beauty that surrounds you at all times. Prepare to stop frequently wherever you choose to go: You will want to get pictures around every curve in the road. The famous north shore is only an hour away if you want to see the really big waves in the right season. I can't tell you much about the night-life or the local restaurants. We started our days early and by the time we returned, we were generally exhausted, ready to either take a walk along the ocean or just relax on the porch and retire, getting ready for the next day. If night life and local fare are critical to your location this may not be the best spot for you. But if you don't mind driving along breathtaking roads to find these spots, this might still be the place for you. The day we left was a sad day for us. Our 18 year old son was particularly quiet - none of us wanted to leave and this property was a major reason why. Whether you are on vacation, your honeymoon, of thrill seeking, this is the best way to go. Forget the big hotels. Experience "Paradise" as a local, not as a tourist. You won't regret it.

Words cannot adequately describe this bit of paradise. The room has everything you need to prepare a meal; the bed is the most comfortable one we have ever slept on, and even the sheets are of superior quality. The real treat is you can hear the ocean right from that comfy bed. Oh, those trade winds really keep you comfortable in the room, too. The breakfasts are delicious works of art, mangoes, papayas, pineapple and other fresh fruit plus a pastry and kona coffee and great teas. We enjoyed breakfast on the porch every morning. The landscaping is gorgeous. The beach is beautiful and literally steps away . Rick and Tammy are the perfect hosts. They are there for you, but they are very respectful of your privacy also. We hope to have the opportunity to return to stay with this dear family again.

Tamy and Rick, Thank you so much for making our first VROB and B&B stay so truely amazing and memorable. To have available all of the water toys (Kayaks,Boogie boards, snorkling gear) was what I thought I wanted, but then there were all of the sights & sounds that we had to enjoy, had to choose. Next time we will stay longer. The rooms were very comfy with any amenity one would want right down to snacks and sunscreen. You have done beautifully in the decor of the rooms and landscaping. Rick, you serve the ultimate Contintental breakfast, and beautifully presented. Also, thanks to Koa and George. Tamy and Rick, thank you again.

My wife,daughter(12) and I had planned to stay here for a few days and move on but we got so darned comfortable we stayed for over a week until we had to fly home! We'd have our morning debates about whether to leave the house and see the rest of the island or just lay in that cozy bed and watch Hawaii 5-0 after a lazy day at the local beach. It was nice to have snacks,Coffee and tea available and a kitchenette to prepare food in.And what a bonus to have access to the snorkel gear and boogie boards which we made good use of.The house is clean and recently upgraded and the Hosts,Tamy and Rick, are very welcoming and friendly but also respectful of your privacy. My only gripe was a weak WIFI connection but that could of been my itouch not finding their signal properly.Anyhoo I'll be recommended this B and B to friends and family if they go.

Dear Rick & Tamy, you were the most lovingly hosts we ever met (and we did a lot of travelling around the world). After a really long journey we arrived at New Year's Eve and we had this jolly party what was so much fun! Our room, with this amazing comfortable bed became our home for 10 days, we felt very familiar with you. The are so many good things to say, like the beautiful secluded beach just across the street, the tasty and healthy breakfast, the quiet area... but for us, the main thing was the openhearted manner of Rick & Tamy. So the highlight of our stay was to become married with "Reverend Rick" on his beautiful boat. Rick & Tamy got to be our 'ohana in Hawaii'.

This is a perfect spot. The accomodations were super clean and beautiful. It was magical to arrive from snow at night and wake up to birds singing and blooming flowers. The garden was lovely and we loved to sit outside and eat the delicious breakfasts provided. The beach was fantastic and quiet - a perfect spot for those who love to sit on the beach and soak up the sights and sounds. We love to explore and this is a very convenient spot as everything is close at hand. We can't say enough about our hosts. They are down to earth people and we felt at home there - like family

We had a wonderful experience staying with Tamy and Rick (and their dog Koa and kitty Tigger). The location is *perfect* for a quiet, beach-time getaway; you really can just walk to the beach in your swimsuit and carrying your towel (that they provide) to jump right in to the gorgeous water. The room itself is clean, comfortable, and very well-designed; we didn't even have to turn on the ceiling fan once, as the windows provide excellent cross-breezes to enjoy the fresh ocean air. Breakfasts were filling, simple, delicious and presented with care, and we really appreciated Rick & Tamy's local knowledge and recommendations. Rick and Tamy are excellent hosts, we couldn't imagine a better experience!

Excellent location, peace, sound of birds the ocean and the trade winds at night. Beach 100 feet from the house and when busy you might see up to ten people per mile. Waikiki is a 20 minute drive if you are interested in world class restaurants and entertaiment. Rick is an avid sailor(Captain) and pilot and can provide you with sailing on the water the air or flying around the island. With Tamy on the team you will have the best of hosts for a dream vacation. P.San

We had such a relaxing time while staying at Rick and Tamy's B & B. It was quiet and private and the breakfast was so beautifully displayed. We went on the tri-maran lunch cruise and had a great time soaking in the rays and hanging out in the ocean. The east side of Oahu is the perfect place to be to get away from it all! I would highly recommend Hale Ola Ohana! Thanks Rick and Tamy for making our anniversary a trip to remember!

I would recommend no better place to stay in Hawaii than with Rick and Tamy. Their bed and breakfast is located in the nice rural town of Waimanalo and is just a block away from the beach. If you desire a secluded island paradise than this is far better than touristy Waikiki and Honolulu. The house was simply beautiful. This Hawaiian plantation style house is painted a gorgeous shade of coral and the room we stayed in was spacious and clean. The bathroom had shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and fresh towels, along with silverware, plates, and a coffee maker. The room is connected to a living room equipped with a massage chair and a little library of DVDs and books about Hawaii. Rick and Tamy also extend to their guests a plethora of essential beach equipment. Great hospitality, beautiful, comfy rooms, perfect location-- you can't get anything better than this.

Rick and Tami are absolutely amazing hosts. The property is well secured and gorgeous on the inside. Rick and Tami made every effort to make sure we were comfortable and we LOVE this B & B !! We actually got married on Waimanalo Beach and spent next couple of nights at this B & B, we do not regret anything and will be telling our mainland friends to stay here, this beats the heck out of any hotel in waikiki......thank you Rick and Tami!!
