If you're looking for a place to lay back and relax, then this is the place for you. Catch up on your reading using the rockers on the back porch. Bring a blanket or lounge chair to get some sun in the spacious back yard. My wife and I ate most of our meals on the back porch table while enjoying the scenery. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The cabin is very clean and well kept. We would definitely recommend this cabin and hope to return to this cabin in the future.
Owner response:Thanks for the positive comments. We hope to make each person feel welcome. Hope you can return again soon.

Fernwood Cabin is not a rustic cabin, it is a beautifully designed home in a rural setting. You immediately notice that great detail and attention, and love, went into the building of this home. Tucked deep into the hills of Virginia, you are able to sit in the back porch rockers, and know that you are at one with nature. It's quiet, and the stars are literally right above your head. The owners are friendly, prompt, and professional people. They go out of the way to make your stay enjoyable. For us they furnished fresh baked bread in a basket along with maps, directions, and a catalog of local attractions and things to do. They even will have some fluffy robes hanging in the closet for you. They will route you to the cabin through Galax, so you will have an understanding of the location of groceries, etc, and that route will seem like a long way the first time you drive out. But after you get your bearings, and look at the local map, you will see that you are only a short distance from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the interstate. We loved being right in the middle of The Crooked Road, Virginia's destinations for old time music. Don't miss the midday free music at the nearby Blue Ridge Music Center. Here you get an up close experience with the musicians, not just performing on a stage, but interacting in small group settings. Fernwood Cabin is indeed a hidden jewel. We can't wait to return!
Owner response:Thank you so much for you kind words. We would love to have you back soon. The Aldermans

I stayed at the Fernwood cabin near Galax for Memorial Day weekend with a friend. We had a little difficulty meeting up with Judy after a long drive from Washington, DC, but she was waiting with freshly baked bread, directions, and suggestions for our weekend. The cabin itself, while a little out of the way, surpassed our expectations. It was clean, very large (we wished we had brought more friends!) and quiet. The kitchen was modern, we used to the provided grill to cook steak and brats, and were even able to watch movies and TV. Judy's guidebook allowed us to pick a few recommended trails to see along the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cabin is also very close to Mt. Airy, NC, a great town to grab a meal in. Be prepared to not have cell reception though! Also, a perfect addition would have been a hot tub. But all in all, a great experience, and dark enough to bring the telescope for stargazing! I would definitely go back.

We found this beautiful cabin while searching for lodging for the Nascar race in Bristol March 20, 2011 and the cabin is a winner. We arrived a couple days before the race and left a couple days after the race. The whole area is full of wonderful things to explore and do or just sit on the porch and do nothing. Once we got the lay of the land it was easy to find our way around and the area is full of a variety of things to do. The owners were a pleasure to work with and provide all the information you need about the area. The basket with local baked goods was an added bonus. The only downside and it could have been just our cell service provider was we did not have cell service at the cabin and there is no other phone there. We had to get a few miles away from the cabin for cell phone service and Galax had several places with Wi-Fi. We had a great time and give our experience 2 thumbs up!

Fernwood Cabin is tastefully decorated, has updated appliances, clean, well-maintained, and the photos do not do justice to the beauty of the cabin. The owner provided names/address of nearby eateries, directions to area attractions, vital telephone numbers and fresh-baked bread! This cabin has a loft with an extra bedroom and a sitting area, as well as the downstairs amenities. The fireplace made for a romantic, toasty atmosphere and the variety of DVDs and music CDs had something for everyone's taste. For those attending the Fiddler's Convention or wanting to mingle with bluegrass music artists in Galax, this would make a great getaway for a couple or a family. I would recommend this cabin and say "put this one at the top of your list".

We were very impressed with the cabin. It was spacious, comfortable and clean, with some lovely features. The owners provided lots of local information and they were very keen to ensure that all our needs were met. The location is a little remote and you have to drive everywhere, which is a minor inconvenience, but the setting is quiet and peaceful and it is a great place to relax. As travellers from overseas we needed laundry facilities and the lack of a washing machine is the only reason we do not give 5 stars. All in all a lovely facility in a quiet location, with perfect hosts.

My family and I had the pleasure of staying at this lovely cabin this past weekend and we had an absolutely wonderful time. The charming town of Galax is not far away and was easy to get to for shopping and great local festivities. The cabin itself was in immaculate condition and we were very satisfied with all of the amenities that this property offered. It provides the best in luxurious, modern comfort with the most wonderful, laid back and peaceful of country retreats. The owners have kept the property in like new condition and everything from the landscaping to the small details inside were just amazing. Stainless steel appliances, flat panel TV, stone fireplace with a beautiful mantle, a breathtaking, postcard like view from the back porch and the woodwork on the cabin was just immaculate. No detail has been missed. The property was even surrounded by blackberry bushes that we spent an afternoon picking which were heavenly. A small, babbling creek is just down the mountain side and makes for a fun and easy little hike to visit. You can truly tell just how much the family that runs this cabin care about it and the experience of their guests. The owners were kind enough to even bake homemade muffins as a welcoming gift for me, my wife and small son. I cannot say enough about this charming piece of paradise and cannot thank the owners enough for their level of hospitality and ensuring throughout our experience that we were well taken care of and had every possible thing that we needed. I would go back in a heartbeat and highly recommend this cabin experience to anyone wanting a peaceful, beautiful and charming cabin retreat with all of the creature comforts of home, coupled with more southern hospitality than you can shake a stick at! We will definitely be back again.

This cabin was just as beautiful and clean as the pictures showed. The surrounding environment was peaceful and the perfect place to relax. The house was well stocked and the bed was deliciously comfortable! Judy was very helpful in giving directions and ideas of things to do in the neighboring towns. Overall, a very relaxing and pleasant experience!
