Step from your car and take a breath of cool mountain air. Hard to believe you’re 28 miles from Charlottesville, eighty-nine miles from Washington. The edge of the wild, this land borders Shenandoah National Forest, the most populous black bear country on the East Coast, with stunning views of the Blue Ridge mountains and the tiny, picturesque community of Graves Mill in the valley below. If you prefer hiking mountain trails, fishing a trout stream or sipping a drink on the wide two-story porch, this is the spot. Wintering in? Let it snow. The house is brand new, completed May 2009.
The whole-house generator automatically keeps things cozy with a 1,000 gallon underground propane tank. Add a steam sauna, two-person Jacuzzi with a view, Rumford fireplace in the Great Room and winter becomes a dreamer's paradise. Springtime brings Mountain Laurel and eagles. Summer offers cool relief from the flatlands. Then comes Autumn, a season you have to truly see to believe.

Recently, my wife and I and three other couples stayed at this beautiful home! The place was incredibly breathtaking with the mountain views. The interior was very clean and was very well built. I met the owner and he was very courteous, helpful and polite. He actually designed the place himself, and he did a wonderful job! People in our group especially liked the fireplace, the rain shower, the sauna, and the amazing rooms (especially the master bedroom and the cottage adjacent to the house). You know you're staying at a great place when you and your friends start talking about returning the following year. We loved the place and recommend it to anybody looking for a relaxing getaway, whether it's with your family or a group of friends.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Our goal is to make each guest's stay as relaxing and carefree as possible by providing all the amenities and comforts of home. We want to provide an environment that invites repeat visitors for years to come.

Our family of five enjoyed a week in early August at this beautiful home, and found it an ideal vacation spot. The combination of a luxurious facility, with all the amenities one could ask for, and the beautiful, quiet, remote setting with views all around, was just what the doctor ordered. My husband and I have three children – ranging in ages from 6 to 12 – and they had a great time, too, very quickly claiming the upper level as the “Kids’ Zone”. With ping-pong and foosball tables, plenty of space, music, and an endless supply of very well organized books, it was little surprise they’d want to set up shop upstairs. We were somewhat cautious about booking something sight unseen over the internet (first-time users), but we could not have been happier. The owners were a delight to work with from start to finish, and this property not only delivers on, but far exceeds, expectations. It is truly a gem. The location is remote enough to be an escape, yet close enough to a variety of attractions, landmarks and hiking options to satisfy many interests and ages. As for hiking, there are a variety of options near to or on the Appalachian Trail to accommodate multiple skill levels. We took two excursions with the children up the nearest climb—Jones Mt.—with the reward of a stunning view at the summit that was well worth the entire visit. Day trips to Charlottesville and national landmarks like Monticello are easy, as is access to a few good local restaurants. That is, if you ever want to leave the gourmet kitchen and every appliance and gadget the inner chef in you could ask for. We developed a new tradition on this holiday: family vacation dinner night. Everybody brought something unique to the table, and we had a great time preparing and enjoying it. As a mom of young children, I can’t remember the last time I finished an entire novel in five days. Not to mention enjoying it from a gentle porch swing with glorious mountain views and sounds from nature all around, including the brief “distraction” of a visit from a hummingbird to the planters very nearby. When we weren’t reading, hiking, taking pictures or cooking, we were catching up over a multitude of great board games on hand, enjoying a steam shower or Jacuzzi bath, or watching the kids make s’mores at the fire pit. I highly recommend this spot—we have nothing but good things to say, and very fond memories to cherish.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

I wasn't sure this property would live up to its photos and descriptions. My expectations were exceeded! This was a fantastic place for our large family and we had a wonderful time. The owner met us there and gave us a detailed tour of his beautiful, spacious, immaculate retreat. We have joked that we were NOT going to submit a good review, so that we could keep this find a secret for ourselves. There is nothing negative to say, though, unless you have an aversion to stairs (which are clearly visible in the photos). As the mom, I really appreciated the comforts and supplies of this property, including laundry soap, grill, charcoal, spices and generous supply of dishes and cookware. Being able to walk in with a few bags of groceries and not having to worry about these basics was a treat. We made use of the well stocked books, movies, cd's, board games as well as ping pong! Thank you for making our trip so enjoyable!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

What a great house! Looking out over a beautiful valley to the blue ridge mountains it is in a lovely situation, with easy access to hiking trails and even a swimming hole, which the kids all loved. We had a two-family vacation at Etlan in July. All the rooms are well-furnished and tasteful, the beds are comfortable and there was plenty of room for 8 of us have our own space. The house was extremely well-equipped and cared for. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. Even the selection of books and games was well above average for a vacation rental. We loved the little guest cottage, which although less luxurious than the house, was a cute and quiet retreat. The only change we would make to the main house would be to add a screened-in porch so sitting out and admiring the view on summer evenings could be more comfortable. There are a lot of flying insects in the mountains in July! The owners are very responsive and helpful and put a lot of love and care into their mountain home. It was among the best houses we have stayed in and we thought we got a lot for the money. We would definitely recommend it and would love to return.Did you find this review helpful? This beautiful home was very accommodating for our family of 9 adults and one toddler. We wanted to get away from the DC metro area while all of our children were home, and we booked this house for three nights. The pictures accurately showed how spacious and graciously decorated and furnished the house was. If anything, it is more spacious than the pictures show. There is a little guest house in the back yard that is equally nice with its own full bathroom as well. The back of the house looks out on the beautiful Virginia Blue Ridge. One suggestion from us was that we wished the owners might make more of that view from the porch by clearing some of the trees right at the edge of the back yard area to open it up. Two large porches with swings and comfortable furniture make them favorite places to hang out. Maybe some day, the owners will screen in one of those porches--even better for spring and summer :). The house was immaculate. We were met by the owner himself who gave us a thorough orientation to the house. Since it is so far out in the country, it is hard to leave and "go do stuff" without spending a long time. So if you go, plan on enjoying the property itself or nearby state park where we went both by car and walking (2.5 miles) to splash and swim in the river there. Very pleasant for all, including the beautiful countryside passed while either walking or driving there. Access to the house is by very steep gravel drive, and that's another reason that once you get in, it's nice to stay. There is a completely outfitted entertainment room with big screen TV and reclining couch as well as many electronic and board games. The kitchen is large and easy to use and fully stocked with everything you could need. Access to Shenendoah National Park is very close, so if you enjoy hiking and want to drive there, this is also a convenient spot. Enjoy!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

All our dealings with the owners were professional and friendly. The instructions given were extremely clear and finding the property was easy. The house is in a beautiful spot and as advertised. We had 9 in our party and we all had more than enough space for everything. This is the best house we have ever rented and you would think you were at home. Everythings is provided to make your stay enjoyable. The attention to detail is incredible. Everywhere was clean and tidy. There is so much to do in the surrounding area that out three nights were woefully short. You will not find a better place to stay.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

We spent 4 nights here with two children (10&13), grandparents, and another family with kids the same age. The house was as beautiful as the pictures and extremely clean and well cared for. The game room, kitchen and cottage were especially great for our group. The location was absolutely stunning and the hosts were a pleasure to deal with. We hope we can come back!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2
