Baltimore cottage description

Avalon Cliff Guesthouse, winner of the 2008 Heritage Restoration Preservation Award, is only 8 minutes to Baltimore City, BWI airport: 35 minutes to Washington, DC (by train). 20 minutes to local area hospitals.

Ours is an historic, pet-friendly and green property! Built as a guest house from materials taken from the 18th century sailing ship, the Somerset, this comfortable retreat property offers two levels, with a first floor bedroom. Other rooms include a completely renovated kitchen, bath, great room, breakfast room, private laundry/changing room/1/2 bath for pool and outdoor use and 2nd floor loft (lots of space for kids) which runs entire length of the house built from rare California Redwood. Look out from your front window to view an English formal garden and watch the sun set over the Patapsco River Valley.

The summerhouse is the perfect place to relax and watch the rain fall or the fire roar. Numerous gardens, orchard and vineyard surround the wooded 4 acre, very private property. Sit out on the back deck to see the forest and streams that run below. Truly a place to relax and renew. Visit our new Swim Spa! Our property is located in the historic town of Avalon, Maryland in Baltimore County. Ask about our seasonal specials!

Gene and Wendy are wonderful hosts. I was in town on business and stayed at Avalon Cliff for 3 weeks with my 2 dogs. Pet friendly!! They provided a dog bed, bowls and treats for the pups. The photos of the cottage were more than accurate and left little to the imagination. The grounds were more beautiful than expected and I knew exactly was I was getting when it came to the accommodations. The cottage felt like an "oasis in the trees". It is not the place for anyone afraid of nature and more than 4 people would be tight for the size of the cottage. Yes, there were stinkbugs but Gene warned me of that information upon my arrival and offered to remove them daily; There was not an abundance of stinkbugs. (There was also a great little hand held dirt devil to remove the ones that ventured inside at an instance). The house and linens were clean and I was able to use the private laundry facilities downstairs in the garage. The kitchen was well stocked and WIFI on site was a huge help as well. I was able to secure a dog walker (Erin with "Tails and Trails" was FANTASTIC and reasonable!) and having the park down the drive was a great convenience. The sun room was a perfect place to have the dogs during the day (no fenced area unfortunately) and the porch just off the kitchen was a great space to unwind and have breakfast. Overall, my stay was very enjoyable and I look forward to returning to Avalon Cliff next year! Thank you Gene and Wendy!

The owners are SUPER nice, but I am confused by the other reviews. We have stayed at other VRBO homes and I am just perplexed. It is in a nice state park. Inside is old. Apparently, there is a stink bug problem in Maryland? But when we entered the house, there were dead bugs everywhere..... on the windowsills, stairs, carpets, lamps. Things were falling on my head. Thwey were bugs. We spent the first day of our vacation cleaning out the dead bugs. That was very frustrating b/c they were obviously EVERYWHERE. After our daily outings, we would return to find 20-30 LIVE stink bugs in the house again. Some in the beds. Our young 3 children cried every night b/c they did not want to go in the beds and sleep. Everyday, for 6 days, we would return to find LIVE bugs crawling all around the house in our beds, food, ceiling, lamps, clothes. We would DAILY clean the house of bugs. I just couldn’t understand how we were expected to live like this. Obviously, I gave my husband an earful when we got home. When we came home and unpacked, there were live stink bugs that had followed us home to CA. Maybe the this cottage was better maintained in the past. Our experience was quite contrary to the other reviewers. I hope that it is brought back to its glory days.

Owner response: We have been serving guests now for over 10 years as innkeepers. Our guests have enjoyed their stays, especially the ones who return every year. We have enjoyed being hosts and admit this is our very first bad review. It also appears that both our experience and the experience of our guests was not positive. Starting with expectations... Meeting the expectation of our guests is important, however we cannot help our guests who choose not to read our listing prior to their visit. • We are located in a forest next to parkland. Nature makes its way into our world. Certainly the issue was not to the extent mentioned in this review, however nature clearly was not the guest's goal of this visit. • As with the main house, the guesthouse was built from repurposed materials from the 1790s with wonderful inlaid wood paneling and antiques, updated with modern conveniences. It is old. In 2008 we won a heritage preservation award for which we are very proud! • We respect the privacy of our guests and will only enter the unit if requested. We hope our guests respect our property in the same regard. With this policy, we do not offer daily cleaning and laundry services for our guests during their stay. • We offer a generous allotment of internet service to equal to 4G per weekly guest stay to permit guests to keep in touch. Our recent guests: • Arrived during a heat wave and experienced bugs flying in through open doors. • Stated they were phobic about nature and so we offered removal of these specific insects after their arrival, yet they declined our offer to remove them (during any time in their stay). • Expected daily cleaning and laundry services as in a hotel. • Used more than 11G of internet downloads, exceeding the allotted amount of 4G although we alerted them after this amount had doubled; they expected this overage usage to be acceptable to us. • Left items all over the unit when departing; in the dishwasher, on the floor and surfaces; left overflowing garbage onto the floor; generally a mess, and definitely disrespecting the property. • Failed to follow instructions of leaving the property in ‘as found’ condition, rather, left the house in “filthy” condition, as stated by our external cleaning crew. As innkeepers, we respectfully request that you consider this review in the company of so many others who have recently and positively reviewed this property.

I cannot express enough my gratitude to the owners Gene & Wendy for such a comfortable and enjoyable stay. We were there for the 2012 Junior Olympics and I was not familiar with the area at all, and to be quite honest scared to drive around in Baltimore. Gene eased my fears and helped guide me to anywhere I wanted/needed to go. He was always available when we needed him with grace and patience that was so much appreciated! The house was lovely with such character. The swimspa was clean and relaxing. The beds were comfortable, everything was clean and the gardens were lovely! It was so much more than I had anticipated and Im so glad we chose their home and no one elses for our stay in Baltimore. Thanks Gene & Wendy!!!!!

My husband and I shared this home with our friends for a week. We are 4 adults and 2 children ages 8 years and 10 months. Avalon Cliff Guesthouse is a perfect home base for day trips to Washington DC and downtown Baltimore. Conveniently located between all the attractions of the two cities. The property is more beautiful than the photos represent. What a wonderful fall retreat! Gene and Wendy are very friendly and helpful. Gene makes fabulous wine and invited us to help with a few batches. We will return to Avalon Cliff Guesthouse!

Recommended for: Families with young children, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing, adventure seekers, girls getaway.
