Santiago de Puriscal house description

Stellar Heights, Cima Estelar, is strategically perched 4000 feet above sea level in the mountain town of Puriscal, Costa Rica. Views of the Gulf of Nicoya (Pacific Ocean) are as common as commanding views of the entire Central Valley of Costa Rica from your mountain perch. Median temperature is 75 Fahrenheit or 24 Celsius year round.  Night views are just as spectacular as the stunning sunsets which enable one to see the sun sink into the Pacific as it performs its kaleidoscopic magic in the sky.

Set in the mountains of Costa Rica enjoy watching toucans from your balcony and watching the clouds roll up the mountain. This house has some of the best views in all of Costa Rica because of the altitude and views of the Ocean and Central Valley from one spot.

My mom and I visited this March and stayed for about 4 days. The property is absolutely beautiful. You feel like you are living in the clouds. The weather, the property, and the host , were all magnificent. The bunker has everything you could possible need and even internet! The property was clean and well maintained. It looks just like it does in the pictures, no surprises. It is perfect for wanting to get away and disconnect from it all. Our host took us horse back riding, to a sugar cane farm, a traditional Costa Rican lunch, the beach and ziplining. It was more of the "real" Costa Rica rather than what just the tourists see. I was surprised at how far away everything touristy was. It may be helpful to rent a car when you visit and know exactly what you want to see. I had heard about a lot of tours/sites in the other part of the country and didn't realize we would be 4 hours away. I will just have to go back to Costa Rica! Overall it was a great trip and I would recommend it for those that want to retreat into the mountains and experience true Costa Rican life.

I arrived at the above for a 2 month stay. The host had to leave after I was there for 3 days due to an emergency in the US. The host's son took over for him. First of all if you are going to spend any time here, you need a car. There is a bus but its a tough walk down the mountain. The chillout place was nice however there are no curtains at all and in the afternoon when the sun hits. Its very hot in the house. The time I went the wind blew every night and it makes it hard to sleep. The main host was gone for a month and I was not asked once if there was anything I needed. I had to beg for garbage bags and never did receive them. I had to borrow a broom to sweep the floors. The views from both places are breathtaking and cannot be put into words. Very beautiful. It took about 3 days of asking if I could use the washer. It seemed like the host's son didn't want to be bother3ed by the guests. After a month I moved to the top of the mountain to the bunker. Another beautiful pace but with some minor updates it would be much better. The windows go from floor to ceiling and once again, no curtains. It gets way to hot in the house in the afternoon. I noticed the first 2 nights I had 100s of ants on the floor and the host's son stated they would be there only for a couple days and they would move on. Well. I found out they were living in the bamboo frame of the love seat which was hauled out to the deck for the remainder of my stay. There is no comfortable chairs to sit in other then 2 plastic lawn chairs. Once the main host returned, once again, I was not asked once if there was anything that I needed. The internet was very poor and when it was brought up to the host he stated he was working on it and its costa Rica. He also seemed like he didn't want to be bothered by the guest. I really felt like I was a bother to the hosts and they didn't want any contact with me. They will pick you up at the airport or drive you around for a price and their price is too high. I would not stay here again and would hope that future guests make sure you read the reviews. Like I said, the place is beautiful but the hosts are not very helpful and the places need to be updated with some minor conveniences. PS. get a car that has enough power to make it up the hill to the bunker. It is really steep.

Owner response: First, I apologize for your having experienced so many unpleasantries on one of our properties. Your review definitely caught us by surprise as we have received well over fifty others from highly satisfied customers all of whom have rated us nothing but five stars. Therefore, we do take your comments seriously. It’s been said the only way to fix a negative attitude is through psychotherapy, religion or brain surgery. Unfortunately, I am neither a shrink, a minister or a neurosurgeon. But I do welcome the opportunity to further discuss your particular situation when you visited with us for two months. My hope is that we can reach a mutually agreed upon outcome that will enable all of us to move forward. You have all of my contact information and I look forward to communicating with you. Pura vida, Your concerned host

My wife and I stayed for a week up there (feb.28th-march 8th) and when I say up there I mean UP THERE. It's way up in the mountains, lots of curvy roads and finally a very steep hill to get to your bachelor pad. Is it worth it? Hell yeah. We saw tucans in the tree very next to our house. Skeeter (owner) took the time to show us around. Different restaurants called Sodas, and most of all the horse back riding with Abel on the mountain side leading to the trapiche ( antique sugar cane mill), a local Tico that showed us hidden waterfalls worth seing. The tour of the trapiche is something you must see and experience. The lunch we had is on our top three best meals of the week. Skeeter is friendly and helpful. The house has a shower that overlooks the mountain and the sunsets are to die for. Demo (guard dog) is the sweetest thing. Feed him sausages like we did and you'll have a friend for the duration of your stay. There's wifi available and a full kitchen except for dishwasher. No curtains so if you mind the morning sun, bring yourself a sleep eye mask. The sun rises early. Overall, our stay was awesome. Yours will be too.

Quite simply - the best vacation we ever had! This clean mountaintop apartment boasted stunning views. There was nothing like coffee on the porch overlooking the gorgeous mountains. After coffee we would hop in the car and motor to various destinations - all were a hour or so drive away - waterfall tours, the ocean, zip-lining, the rain forest, and various quaint mountain villages. Skeeter was a great host - accommodating and leisurely. This Grifo Alto paradise was perfect for discovering and celebrating one of the most beautiful countries on the planet. The perfect place if you want to relax, have a romantic getaway, explore, or adventure. I cannot recommend this highly enough - it was beauty beyond our wildest dreams.

We were fortunately enough to enjoy the property for 3 nights. Waking up to the mountain and ocean view was the highlight. Central Valley at night timejust sparkled and left me in awe. The property is located on top of the mountain, so there are bugs for sure, we lit our off lamp and solved the problems. We staied during the last portion of our trip, the owners were very welcoming and helpful, the nearest town was only 15 min away, we were able to get some local stuff to cook ourselves and just enjoy the views. On our last day, the drive to the airport was short and smooth, which was really relaxing way for us to end our vacation. Really glad we booked the place.

If you are looking for exquisite views, relaxation, and to be away from an urban setting, Cima Estelar will not disappoint you. "Skeeter" is an excellent host and will go out of his way to make sure that your stay is enjoyable. My wife and I rented a 4WD SUV and we're glad we did. We wanted to live like the locals to see if Costa Rica would be a place for prolonged stays after retirement. We certainly had an adventure and in the future, we look forward to visiting the beach and Arenal. If at all possible avoid the rainy season. Otherwise, enjoy Costa Rica; it's a beautiful country. As the locals say "Pura Vida".

Skeeter and Alan, Thank you for your tremendous hospitality! We appreciated the time you took to show us Puriscal. And Enjoyed your restaurant recommendations. Thank you for introducing us to those delightful little Costa Rican gems, the "cocana pastries". Alan, many thanks for your Eli with the airport change of plans debacle!! You were very gracious and helpful.mthis was our honeymoon so we took a night to splurge and went to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, and very much enjoyed a coffee plantation tour of the Doka Estate on our way back. Our suitcase is now full to bursting with coffee to give to our friends and family back in the states. Costa Rica is staggeringly beautiful country and we richly enjoyed the spectacular views from the Twilight bunker. Philip and Patricia Colorado Springs

(Transcribed from the in-house guest book) These views are breathtaking! And it is impossible to capture with pictures. It is something that can only be appreciated in person. The rolling clouds could be enjoyed all day and the twinkling lights of the Central Valley are incredible. We began our journey two weeks ago in Manzanillo on the Caribbean side, worked our way up to Arenal and La Fortuna, then here for the final part of our trip. The amazing Twilight Bunker was the perfect end tour honeymoon. We have experienced many things here and your kindness and hospitality will not be forgotten. Now we are sitting here, bags packed, and not at all ready to go home to slushy Minnesota (several inches of slush expected tonight). We only wish we could stay and enjoy this place longer. We couldn't have asked for a better experience here. Take care and, Alan; best of wishes for a long and happy marriage with Yamileth. Pura Vida, Mike & Erin Minnesota

Picture doesn't do the property justice. The ambience -- feel of the panorama, sound of the toucans, views of the Central Valley and the sun setting over the Pacific -- must be experienced. The landlord described the view best: like someone had thrown a handful of diamonds onto the valley. Manager was extremely helpful and very personable, and I sensed honesty and sincerity from the first contact. I recommend this property wholeheartedly.

                  Owner info

About the owner: The quest for tranquility is one we all strive for. Having devoted 25 years running my own business and yet another 10 working for a Fortune 500 company, I opted for early retirement to continue my search. My previous life afforded me the opportunity to travel the world; China, Russia, the Baltic, Europe, Africa, South Africa, Australia, Greece and Portugal to name a few. Each time I visited a foreign country I tried to picture myself retiring in its midst with its specific climate, traditions and way of life. Portugal was on the verge of getting the nod until I discovered healthcare and taxes on foreigners were not conducive to my parameters I had established for myself. My first visit to Costa Rica was perpetrated by a business associate who indicated his parents had retired here several years prior. He arranged for my visit to see them and the rest is history. It is here that I find the tranquility that I’ve never lost nor ever will. It is here that I found a mountaintop that can now be shared for others to enjoy the views of the Pacific, and the Central Valley. It is here at Cima Estelar (Stellar Heights) that one can find a glimpse into the secrecy of nature; Toucans, parrots, sloths, iguana, giant woodpeckers and flora comparable to the Garden of Eden.

Why the Owner Chose Santiago de Puriscal:
It's an hour drive from San José International airport. Solitude, quiet and safety with phenomenal views.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Watch the sunset over the Gulf of Nicoya on your balcony set 4,000 feet above sea level.
