When we renovated and redesigned the floor plan of Hawthorne we wanted to open the house up into a greater expansive living area. We wanted to design the bedrooms so that each one offered a fantastic view of the mountains. My wife, Sara, is a professional chef and cookbook author so we wanted the house to have a wonderfully functional kitchen for entertaining and testing recipes. Since we wouldn't be using the house full time we wanted to design the house as a vacation rental and built in many amenities and comforts with renters in mind.

The location is private and quiet but only a short walk, bike ride, or drive to all of the local attractions. It's a two minute walk to Mirror Lake, the lake the village sits on and a five minute walk to downtown Lake Placid.

My family and I (9 adults total) stayed at Hawthorne Cottage for an eat, drink and ski weekend at the end of February and had a fantastic time. The house not only stood up to the listing description but surpassed it on many levels. The location (walking distance to restaurants and shops), size of the rooms, each bedroom with a bathroom, the fireplace lit on a snowy evening and the gourmet kitchen… I could go on and on! And, the owner even checked in with us to make sure everything was okay. I would definitely recommend Hawthorne Cottage to friends and family and hope to return there again myself.

This is a wonderful house! It's spacious, very comfortable and conveniently located. The house is beautifully decorated, with antiques and bookshelves everywhere loaded with books. We felt like we were in a home, not a rental property. The bedrooms were especially comfortable and generously sized. It snowed a little each day so there was always fresh snow on the ground, which thrilled the kids. There might still be a perfect snowball in the freezer. My daughter was planning to take it home but forgot! Whiteface was about a 15 minute drive, and super simple to find. The parking lots are busy but well organized and they have free shuttles to the lodge. We thought it was easier to park up at the Kids Kampus since we have little skiers, and we made that area our home base. The full day ski school is pricey but well worth it. My kids were going on the lift and completely skiing themselves by the end of the day. We all loved walking into town, where there are lots of restaurants, shops, and the Olympic Complex. The kids had a ball ice skating on the Olympic Oval. The toboggan ride is also within walking distance and looked liked lots of fun but we ran out of time. Everyone agreed that Lake Placid is an awesome place to visit, and we're hoping to make it back!

If you worry about what you'll end up with - don't when it comes to The Hawthorne. This home is beautiful, clean, spacious and in a good location. We stayed here in January 2013 with 10 adults. Every couple had their own personal space in rooms that are essentially suites. Since it was the winter, we were not using the screened-in porches, but I can imagine that in the summer with those french doors open, it would add another dimension that is unbeatable. The communal spaces are open and warm, with nooks and crannies that can give everyone extra space to do their own thing. We drove to town because with a winter warm spell the roads got a little slushy, but it is very walkable. The owners are friendly and responsive. They provided suggestions for local activities, etc. if you need it and stocked the home with reading materials and plenty of the comforts of home you may not always get in a rental. If we return to Placid with the large group we will definitely go for The Hawthorne again.

Everything about Hawthorne was perfect. We were there to do some skiing at Whiteface and couldn't have asked for better conditions. The home was warm, inviting, spacious and beautifully decorated. The bedrooms were large and the beds were so comfortable. We all felt very comfortable in Peter and Sarah's home. We loved the library of books available for our enjoyment as well as Sarah's cook books. The kitchen was superb and inspired me to make one of Sarah's recipes one evening which was a hit....the balsamic roasted chicken. Peter was so gracious and helpful and wonderful to deal with. I hope to return again.

I have been to Lake Placid many, many times. I've stayed in every Hotel/Motel in town and have developed a love affair with the High Peaks region. This trip was different, there was a group of us and it was New Years Eve. The intent was to enjoy Placid with a fun group.....to do some cooking, drink lots of good wine, beer and enjoy the company and conversation of friends. The pictures online do not do this magnificent home justice. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to fry, bake, broil, braise, saute...you name it. I cooked three meals a day during out stay including baking bread and rolls. The common areas are comfortable and tastefully appointed with quality furnishings,, artwork and the personal items that make the Hawthorne a home, not just a steril vacation rental. The house is perfect and not perfect in all the right ways! You wont feel more at home anywhere in Lake Placid than you will at the Hawthorne. Thank You for sharing your home Pater and Sara, I can't wait to come back!

Hawthorne is a wonderful retreat from the world. When you step in through the door you have an immediate sense of being home. Maybe it is the kitchen with the great wooden table and its assortment of chairs that recalls earlier days in similar kitchens. Maybe it is the sight of the mountains sitting quietly waiting for you to be quiet so that you can lose whatever stresses you dragged along with you. Kitchens are central to a home and so it is with Hawthorne...a six-burner Viking range and oven complete with warmers, a full range of cooking gear, everything one could hope for. We enjoyed fresh ground coffee and new baked muffins as we watched the sunlight spread over the mountains. Sleeping out on a screened porch was wonderful..to see the stars as you drift off and awaken to the vista of the mountains. My wife particularly loved the bathtub in the master bath where she could stretch out completely her five foot seven frame. Everything was better than we expected and the owner could not have been more helpful. Hawthorne is a magnificent home and you will be sad to leave it. We were.

I spent 10 days at this beutiful house in March for a birthday celebration. The house couldn't have been more comfortable. With groups large and small, it was always just the right size. The kitchen is particularly well equipped and we did plenty of aggresive cooking with ease. The views are beautiful, the house is beautifully decorated and comfortable, and very nicely located. My friends and I will return to Hawthorne in winter 2013.

After much research and debate among various Lake Placid rental options, we recently joined three other couples and rented what we called "The Perfect" (the Lake Placid Club Hawthorne cottage) for a long weekend in February. We originally named it that because of how it is described by VRBO (so we could distinguish it from other options in discussing our choice), but ended up thinking that was the right name. We even had a toast to "The Perfect" on our second evening. Our plan was to X-country ski and enjoy a long weekend together. We did just that, loved our stay, and loved the house!! The living area has an open architecture (large living room and gourmet kitchen) that was very conducive to relaxing and talking during meal preparation and after skiing. The owners have not done the typical thing and stripped the house of all the nice sort of stuff - instead it looked and felt very nice and was well equipped. Virtually all of the bedrooms have their own bathroom, which was nice because each couple had their own space. The house was very clean when we arrived. The owner was very good about providing information (before, during, and following our stay), and was a pleasure to work with. It was a bit tight but we managed to fit four cars in the parking area without a problem. There was plenty of firewood for fires in the fireplace, but we would recommend buying a starter log for each fire (available at the grocery store) because there was not much in the way of kindling. All in all, this property is an excellent one to rent - you can't beat the location (within walking distance of the Village and the path around Mirror Lake and with a great view of the High Peaks), it's clean, its layout is great, and the owner is very easy to work with. All in all - it's PERFECT!

From the moment we walked into the toasty warm house on a cold February day we felt like we were in a beautiful family home.  Our stay, with two other couples exceeded all of our expectations: from the initial view of the property as we pulled into the driveway, to the comfortable furnishings and well appointed  kitchen.  Shelves found throughout the home, filled with cookbooks and culinary magazines inspired us to spend as much time at the stove as possible!  (Fosters brownies...... Mmmmm!) While the open feeling of the kitchen/dining/living room provided plenty of space for all of us to gather as a group, the rest of the house with its many bedrooms and baths allowed for privacy and quiet spaces.  The safe and cozy feeling of a winters day could only be exceeded by a summer visit, as it would be like going to screen porch heaven!  Each one a private sanctuary with a stunningly beautiful view of the not too distant high peaks.  Location was fantastic, feeling both wild and secluded while gazing out at the mountains, yet a 5 minute walk puts you on the shore of Mirror Lake and into the heart of Lake Placid. If the lake is frozen you can make to and from Ben and Jerry's in under 15 minutes!  An endless network of hiking and  x country ski trails can be accessed (literally) out the front door. The owners were wonderful to work with, always available and responsive, and you can tell as you wander about the many rooms,-they love their home. Our time at Hawthorne passed much too quickly, we are already planning our next stay!
