Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2007
Linda and Bernie are partners both in marriage and in business. For 33 years they owned a retail /mail order/ direct marketing business with imports from Europe. Now in semi- retirement, they continue to work together on various creative projects. Their latest venture is a coffee table photo book titled Colorado’s South Park that was published in 2010. For over three years they traveled the area, hiked the meadows and mountains, photographed and sketched in and made South Park their home. Bernie’s passion is photography and creative design; Linda’s is painting and drawing. They have been featured in galleries in Georgia and Colorado. Besides their artistic talents, they enjoy skiing, hiking and traveling. Since 1995 they have hosted and guided tours to Europe with VIP-Alpine Tours since 1993. Bernie, a native of Austria knows the language and customs as well as many quaint places that most tour companies miss. Linda also speaks German and has traveled to Europe at least 40 times. The Nagy's enjoy RVing and visit frequently their daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter in Georgia. They have a son also in New Zealand who they visit occasionaly. Bernie is an award winning photographer and publisher of the international award winning travel essay coffe table book "South Park" High Country Paradise.
Why the Owner Chose Fairplay
We have lived and owned property in Colorado on and off since 1985 when we made our first family ski vacation. When we retired from our business, we knew we wanted to spend more time in the high country. The property in South Park is a perfect place for us. Here we live in quiet comfort and enjoy the magnificent vistas and pure clean air at 10,385 ft. Our place is close to civilization and conveniences and yet also close to remote areas that rival any place for sheer beauty and enjoying nature.
The Unique Benefits of this Apartment
Our house and rental apartment is on a wooded 1-acre plot with aspens and evergreens. There are hiking trails that begin literally from our back door! The views to the west are constantly changing and never cease to amaze us. Spectacular sunsets frequently burst across the sky. We love the area of South Park so much that we wrote a book about it! It's called Colorado's South Park, High Country Paradise (Available through Amazon or Paypal).

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in January 2011. The apartment is extremely comfortable with everything you need and more including humidifiers for the dry winter air, and books to cuddle up with. The private views from the windows are incredible! We loved being greeted in the driveway by the owner's husky when returning home from skiing. She was very friendly and gentle. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful and even loaned us their new snowshoes and gave us drivng directions to some trails. We decided to take a day off from skiing and do the snowshoeing for free which was great! The apartment is probably one of the best values I have found and we have stayed in vrbo rentals around the world. Book this apartment, you will not be disappointed!

Our stay was just what we were looking for--an affordable, close-to-home (but not too close) getaway for the weekend, with hiking and sightseeing easily accessible. The Nagy's were perfect hosts, offering tips for hiking and weekend activities. The condo itself had everything we needed--even a pack-n-play for our 6 month old! We highly recommend this property!

If you're looking for a base from which to explore central Colorado, you won't find a better place. I don't believe there's a better value to be found in the area for a couple. This apartment has all the comforts of home -- comfortable living room, excellent satellite TV, good internet, full kitchen with quality appliances, large bedroom with VERY comfortable bed and a sitting area, large tiled bathroom with quality fixtures, and a large utility room with top quality washer and dryer. Although the pictures very accurately depict the appearance and condition of the apartment, it is more spacious than the pictures can convey. My wife and I stayed a week, and we could not have been more comfortable. But the best thing about Haus Edelweiss is its wonderful location. It is in the midst of lush evergreen and aspen forest and 12 to 14,000 foot mountain peaks. There are numerous side roads and hiking trails into the mountains nearby. for exploring and enjoying the beauty of the wildflowers in summer. Fairplay is a very friendly town with a surprising number good restaurants for its size and a good sized grocery store, and it's only 20 miles to Breckenridge if you need more. The owners are an added bonus. They are exceedingly nice, responsive, and helpful. Having lived in the area for many years, they have lots of advice and suggestions to help you get the most out of your stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Haus Edelweiss!

Really Nice Place

My wife and 18 year old son stayed for 4 nights in the middle of July. For starters, the climate of the area was perfect - 70 degree highs - and "sweatshirt weather" lows. (When you are from 100 degree heat in Kansas in mid summer....the climate was perfect!) The mountains were beautiful. The area (South Park) was not too remote, yet not at all congested or a tourist trap. We spent a lot of time trout fishing -one day up 4-mile creek and a couple days in Tomahawk State WIldlife Area (really, really nice trout stream with no people). Even novice trout fishermen like us caught trout. We hiked a nice trail and did South Park City in FairPlay one morning. South Park City is very nicely done and a must do. Now for the apartment. Do not let the word "apartment" turn you off. It was every bit a super nice "condo" if that makes you feel better. It was VERY clean, new feeling and comfortable. It is a few miles north of Fairplay on a mountain ridge - easy to get to - yet somewhat secluded. It has a new washer and drier, wonderful kitchen area with large fridge, stove, dishwasher, etc. Essentially it is the basement area under the hosts house fixed up as a very nice apartment. Access is like a giant walk-out basement with patio facing some beautiful peaks....and you can park on asphalt 10 feet away from the door. My family can think of nothing we disliked about the accommodations. It beats a hotel or high dollar lodge hands down. Arranging things was as easy as it gets and the price was incredibly reasonable (no cleaning fees or hidden costs, either!). Finally the host were super individuals. They were available for any help, yet did not intrude at all. We have no regrets whatsoever staying here. It is HIGHLY recommended.

We just returned from 10 outstanding days at the Nagy's home in Fairplay. Their clean, modern apartment has everything you need for a comfortable stay and is even better than the photos show. We were able to cook in a lot because this modern, well-designed apartment has everything you need. After following Bernie's recommendations for a day trip to the various trails and sights in the area the apartment is a great place to relax and refresh. Bernie knows the area very well (and most if not all the people in it!) so follow his recommendations on what to see, where to eat and how to get around the area. It's like having your own tour director on site. Also, if you have a chance to be there for Burro Days next year we would recommend it - a well-planned and fun weekend. Thanks Bernie and Linda for a great vacation!

My husband and I, both in our twenties stayed here February 6 for a week. The house was perfect for all our needs! We took advantage of the full kitchen and cooked quite a bit. We came to ski for the first time and by recommendation from Berny, went to Monarch abt an hr and a half away and we ended up going there all 3 days to ski for the great deal and kind people. We will definately stay here again. It was a perfect location between anywhere you would like to go! Berny and Linda were excellent hosts. It was completely private until you needed something. Then they were always more than happy to help! Highly recommended!!!

My wife, daughter and I stayed for one week at the Haus Edelweiss last December. We really enjoyed the accomodations Wewere able to sled, snow- shoe, and cross country ski almost in front of the property and Breckenridge skiing was just a short drive from the location. The apartment was like new and clean and having a new washer and dryer was a definite plus for our needs. It was verycomfortable. The hosts were friendly, helpful and knowledgable of the area. We would definitely stay there again. Great! 4 star location tucked away

A very nicely laid-out (basement level) appartment; tastefully furnished and decorated. Very clean. All new high quality appliances. Humidifiers. Bernie, the host, is very accommodating - bought a new DVD player after we got some difficulties with connection of our laptop to the TV. We were budget-traveling to ski at Breck and opted for this apartment because of its relative closeness to ski slopes and other outdoor activities. Our two teenager sons slept on the sofa in the big room. Worked well for them. Few nights were very cold, but we turned on electric heaters, and it was Ok. Highly recommended! P.S. Would be nice to see this area in spring time. Should be amazing!

This ground floor apartment was perfect for my husband and me. It was spotless upon our arrival. It was very nicely furnished and very well-equipped. Owner/host is very knowledgeable about the area. The washer & dryer were a plus. The bathroom is very large and hot water is plentiful. We would definitely return to stay here and recommend it to other couples.
