The Retreat at Pipestem is a beautiful ten acre property, sitting quietly, hidden in the woods, right next to Pipestem State Park. Golf is only a 15 minute walk away, hiking trails start within minutes from the Retreat and all the activities the State Park has to offer are available to our guests as well. You can choose how active you want to be, from playing golf, to horseback riding, antiquing, dining, archery, a visit to the nature centre, to boating, hunting and fishing, or enjoy the quiet nature around you from the deck or the porch.
Our newest of three cabins, the Black Bear was finished late 2009 and incorporates all the things we learned from remarks our guests made. Simple things like a bedroom on the main floor, a Jacuzzi tub, cathedral ceilings, a loft with TV, an complete kitchen, a Jacuzzi tub, a three zoned air and heating system and a pellet stove as a fireplace to sit around with a life fire on a chilly evening in fall. There is a huge deck of 10 x 40 feet and a covered porch for when it's raining.
The cabin (and we can hardly call this a cabin anymore) is built of full logs and the wall in the living room and loft has windows from floor to the top of the roof. Inside, the cabin is fitted out with good comfortable furniture. A real log dining room and master bed room set, make this cabin complete.

My family of 7 rented this beautiful cabin nestled next to Pipestem State Park at the Retreat. The owner (name left out due to policy) is very nice to work with and gives you plenty of ideas on things to do/see; thank you L! The cabin itself was more then described and perfect 4 us. The teenagers had the top floor/bthrm, us older folks had the main floor and my son/wife had the bottom floor. There are 4 bdrms and 3 full baths so this was ideal and gave us some privacy. The kitchen has all u can ask for including a waffle maker and slow cooker (good for those busy and/or snow days). The jets in the main bath were great after a long day of exploring. The views from the cabin are nice with lots of trees. The road butting up to the driveway is great for nice walks. We had a wonderful time enjoying the local parks, snow and the surrounding towns. We utilized the golf course to take a jab at skiing and sledding; a must!!!! The cost was $2-$5 per hr.!!! I scratched another item off my "bucket list"; horseback riding in the snow. It was 19 degrees and our guide was a hoot along with Doc the QH I rode. The staff at Pipestem Resort were informative and friendly. We saw up to 60 deer at a time and no less then 12 multiple times a day/night. One evening while driving in the town of Princeton, 4 deer ran out in front of us and we missed them by inches; snow was thick. Deer came up to our cabin most nights/mornings for a "winter treat". The cabin is centrally located to many area attractions. We visted the Organ Cave and had a private 3 hr tour with a very knowledgable guide along with the resident bobcat-cross. The cat took a liking 2 me and was with me every step of the way. The cave is full of bats who were sleeping and trying to stay warm (32 degrees). The state parks were magnificant and we look forward to visiting again. We found a nice Mexican Rest. in Princeton, The El Dorado (nestled in a tiny strip mall/hard to see from the road). Our waiter, "Red" was a hoot and enjoyed making strawberry daquiri's 4 us girls and fruit for the baby. The food was excellent and the service #1. Ask for "Red" when you go. If you are looking for a nice place to stay and a wonderful owner to work with look no further. The Black Bear Cabin is a MUST!!!!! We rented this cabin for a week and did not make much of a dent in all the things we wanted to see and do. L., Thank you for letting us share your beautiful cabin in the woods of WV. We look forward to coming back again.Recommended for: People with disabilities, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: My name is Lisa Mateboer and I was born and raised in West Virginia. I became a teacher in Charlotte, NC, but always was traveling back to West Virginia to visit my mother who still lives there. Wanting a place to stay I found what we later called The Retreat at Pipestem. My husband works out of the country a lot and one of the things I looked at was whether I would stay there alone. Being a teacher in a big city, I always longed to go back to West Virginia. Having two cats, always made it difficult to find a good place to stay and the Cardinal is just ideal to bring them. As my husband works on ships and is away from home for months at a time, I wanted a place where I could be close to my mother who still lives in West Virginia and also feel safe.
Why the Owner Chose Pipestem:
When we found The Retreat at Pipestem we simply fell in love with the place. It's so beautiful and quiet and yet so close by the State Park that we could not resist. There were two log homes at that time and the Black Bear we built a few years later. We found a local builder who did a beautiful job building and finishing the log home. The location is ideal, right next to the StatePark, away from the main roads, but still easy accesible.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The saying that for real estate, the three most important things are location, location and location is certainly true for the Black Bear. Within a mile of the Lodge of Pipestem State Park with all the activities going with it. Being away from the main roads but still within of few miles of them, make this place a true gem amongst vacation homes.
