Our English speaking agent Giuseppe Dini meets you at the town car park (free parking) and escorts you through the 12th Century town gate to our apartment in the medieval terrace built on the ancient city walls. You walk into the living room, with a modern kitchen and dining area. From two leather covered reclining chairs you can watch the sun rise over the Appenine mountains and light up the fertile valley of the Tiber 400 yards below you.

A circular staircase drops to the bedroom below, (2 single beds or one double bed), with under floor heating for the winter months. An Italian tiled floor leads into the ensuite bathroom with shower, bidet, basin and toilet set under an 800 year old arch. From the bedroom double French windows open onto the broadwalk along the battlement walls: the view is astounding.

Fiametta, our caretaker lives next door and is always ready with help; anything that she cannot solve, Giuseppe can. She will have placed a bottle of wine and two glasses ready for you to toast your arrival in San Tommaso. And in the kitchen cabinet you will find everything necessary for your first breakfast in Italy, should you arrive late in the evening.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2007

My twin sister and I recognized a fantastic opportunity to create a brand new apartment out of available space in the lower level of our terraced building. We love restoring old buildings, fitting in the modern facilities without changing the historical authenticity of the place. Since we now own three apartments in the same building, we have been able to arrange wonderful family gatherings at Christmas, Easter and in the Summer. We find any time of the year has its own special rewards. Our husbands were amazed at what we had created out of the space.

Why the Owner Chose Anghiari

This 800 year old 'borgo' on the Tuscany/Umbrian borders has earned its place in the official Italian register of "The 100 Most Beautiful Small Towns of Italy". The town is completely un-spoilt, and the mayor keeps it spotlessly clean and well maintained. The Anghiaresi are wonderfully friendly, particularly to Americans and Britons because so many of them have family members living in the USA or the UK. Because of the narrow streets there are no cars in the medieval part of town and the peacefulness is truly wonderful. Yet there are two museums, 4 medieval churches, six good restaurants, four pizza bars, four coffee shops, four bars and antique and art shops within walking distance. On Wednesdays the local people set up a market for locally produced wine, cheese, meats and vegetables. There are regular buses to bigger towns nearby like Sansepulchro and Arezzo, where you can get a fast train to Florence and be in the heart of that great city in 50 minutes, or Rome in 90 minutes.

The Unique Benefits of this Condo

Living under an 800 year old roof in a medieval city is a unique experience; you find yourself g in the world of Dante, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Saint Thomas of Canterbury walked on the same street you will live on, before dying as a martyr on the steps of Canterbury Cathedral on his return to England.
In so many places you have to drive distances to experience history; here you are living inside medieval walls undisturbed by cars. It is totally safe to wander alone night and day. When the morning sun steams through the shutters the first person to get up wanders 500 yards down the street to collect oven warm croissants. Cafes with superb Italian coffee are just minutes away and since you walk, there are no parking problems. For those that are cooks, fresh provisions come in every day from the local farms; to the others, the local people boast that it is impossible to eat badly in Anghiari, through a full culinary range, a gourmet's delight.

I would highly recommend this property. It had every convenience we needed. The listing description was accurate. Since we didn't have a car the bus service was very good to get us to places we wanted to see.

What a wonderful town and lovely apartment. We so enjoyed adding Anghiari and Eastern Tuscany to our favorite places in Italy. The location is really superb for visiting a wide area of Eastern Italy; all made it back to Florence in one day and all the way to Ravenna (stunningly beautiful mountains and flat delta. The intensity of Italian cultivation is a beauty in itself.) We also visited Cortona and Lake Trasamene for the first time. You were right; the Soldini shoe outlet is not to be missed; (four pairs of shoes and suitcase and our Busatti (linenes) and Ravigni products (olive oil and soap) home in.) San Sepulchro and the Pierro della Francesclo paintings are lovely. Thanks for an apartment in an unsurpassed location and thrilling views - Arrividerci!

Thank you for the most wonderful honeymoon here in Anghiari. Every morning we have enjoyed the most beautiful view, and felt thankful to be here. We have rested well, enjoyed the local Chianti and cuisine, and met some lovely locals. It has been the perfect start to our married life together; thank you so much!! We look forward to returning (perhaps when it is not snowing) we too shall tell everyone we meet of the magical place Anghiari.
