About an hour’s drive from Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city, and half an hour from the Guadalajara International Airport, you will find Ajijic situated in the vast central Mexican plateau that is home to the Sierra Madre mountain range and the largest lake in Mexico, Lake Chapala.
Your home away from home is located in the renowned community of La Floresta, along the frontage street off the main road. You will love the sense of openness and brightness and all the amenities that make this home one of a kind. We could try to describe the house in detail but we probably would not do it much justice, so just let us share with you what a day in our life looks like and some of our favorite things about this home and the picturesque town of Ajijic.
Imagine waking up to the sounds of colorful birds and drawing the curtains to view climbing bougainvillea, hibiscus and roses in the backyard. My wife takes her coffee and crossword puzzle to the back terrace and I keep her company enjoying a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice and the latest mystery novel. Today we feel like going out for breakfast so we take a short walk to our favorite coffee shop where we catch up with other expats who have moved here either for the season or have made Ajijic their permanent home.
Did we mention that today was Wednesday? Well, it’s farmers’ market day and one of our favorite outings of the week. So after finishing breakfast and saying goodbye to our friends we step off the curb and begin to walk the span of two long blocks that have been closed to traffic. We begin ogling everything that the vendors have to offer, from produce, dairy and meats, to clothing, music and artwork. It never ceases to amaze us the contrast of sounds, colors and aromas that your senses get bombarded with walking through the narrow street. At first you do a double take when you hear some of the vendors offering their goods in English and the English-speaking shoppers bartering in Spanish, but soon after your first visit to the market both cultures seem to blend seamlessly.
After we get our shopping done we walk back to the house and pick some limes off our tree in the front yard to make a refreshing limeade, making sure to save some limes for our happy hour tequila or perhaps a bottle or two of fine Mexican beer. I think we will have time for a quick swim just before lunch. For dinner we bought some savory meat and vegetables for steak fajitas that we’ll be cooking al fresco in our backyard.
When we are done with dinner and clearing up the kitchen we move to the den to watch some comedy or drama TV shows and catch up with the world news.
You think the day is over? Not a chance. Tonight we have a full moon and are in the mood for a nice, romantic night out in the pool area listening to the calming sound of its fountain. We step out directly from our master bedroom and four steps later we are in the Jacuzzi relaxing and enjoying a glass of our favorite wine. So… goodnight. Tomorrow is another day –golf anyone?
By now you might be asking yourself how we get around here. You see, sometimes we walk, sometimes we wait for the local bus at the stop right outside the house and not too often we rent a car. I guess it all depends on what we want to do and where we want to go.
There is so much more I would love to tell you about this place such as the friendliness of the locals, the social groups formed for and by Americans/Canadians, the safety on our streets, the beauty of the sunsets over the lake, the many restaurants and eateries that abound in this area, but I am running out of space. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the weather.
Do mild winters and cool summers appeal to you? Since this town is about 5,000 feet above sea level, average daily temperatures are in the 70’s °F with low humidity. Of course, there is always the disclaimer that we cannot guarantee that you will not experience some cooler winter nights or warmer summer days, but we can absolutely guarantee you that they will always beat a Canadian winter night or a Texas summer day. Believe us, we have experienced both!!

The place is better than the photos and spotlessly clean as well.

We stayed here for a month in Sept - October 2010. The photos shown only tell part of the beauty of this home. We loved it. The place is very clean and everything looks new. The housekeeper and the gardener do a great job and are nice friendly people. Georgina, the property manager is most helpful if you need help. The location is excellent. The house is located just off the "main drag". Three or four restaurants are within a couple of blocks and a $3.50 cab ride will get you to about 50 great places to eat or you have an excellent kitchen and outdoor grill at home. The bus stops about 50 yards from the front door. So, if you want a cheap ride, you can go almost anywhere for less that a dollar. We rode the bus several times just because it was a fun thing to do. This is an outstanding home. You will not be disappointed if you stay at Casa Colibri. If you bring a car, there is "behind the wall" parking.

We came to Ajijic to stay for a few months and decided to stay for a year. We lived in this house for two months and we loved it. We had to look for something else for the reaming time, since this house was already booked. Thus, while searching for our next home, we saw lots of other properties and can assert that this is one of the most beautiful houses in Ajijic. You walk in and just say "wow." The owners, Chely and Dave, the rental manager, Georgina, and the gardener and his wife, Lupe and Susana, were of wonderful assistance, too. They made us feel right at home, here in Ajijic. Thank you so much!

What a beautiful house. I have known the owners for years and I can guarantee you that they will give you the best treatment ever. This house is a great way to visit or ease into retirement in the vibrant American retirement community in Guadalajara. You can rent for a week, month, or season and then see how much you really like it here. Find out why so many Americans live here.
