Great Paradise!,, Wife and me went to Key West for 22 years of marriage and had a wonderful time. The cottage was perfect for us two. Wish would have stayed longer to enjoy it fully. Ted is excellent to work with. We are hoping to go back soon with friends and rent the other cottages. The place is close to everything you need and enjoy from Key West. May God Bless this piece of Heaven.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

First, a few things you may want to know about us and Key West before you read my review. "Who are these people?" I'm 63 and my wife is 59. I've traveled all over the world and stayed in many of the world's top rated hotels. We're not neophyte travelers or kids. We were in Key West twice last year. We stayed in this unit for two months this year. "What is Key West like?" If you have not been to or stayed in Key West before, here are a few things you need to know. 1. Key West is a very expensive place to hang out. We're talking Hawaii or Bermuda expensive. So if you're looking for a cheap vacation, go to Mexico. 2. Key West is a real town. A real old town. A real old and quirky town. This is not a Disneyland clean and everything new old codger city like Naples Florida. If you like everything new, nice and squeaky clean perfect, don't come to Key West. Go to Naples. Now the review. We loved it here. We really like Ted the owner and we found him very pleasant to work with. His phone and email response is outstanding anytime of the day or evening. The unit was as described and pictured accurately. You do need to know this is an efficiency or small studio unit. Basically that means everything except the bathroom is in one room. My wife was a bit confused when she booked this unit and at first was shocked at the size. That being said, it was very clean and Ted provided everything we needed to stay here. Linens, silverware, dishes, pots, pans etc. We didn't need anything except food and we stayed for two months. The location could not be any better. And location in Key West is everything. We parked our car when we got here and didn't move it until we left two months later. This is a small locked compound of four cottages and we really liked the size/setting. It's quiet, pretty and has a nice small Key West pool and vibe. The mosquito comments were from someone who never even stayed here, so ignore that review. Yes there were a few mosquitoes but they didn't bother us. My wife is allergic to mosquitoes and we're from Minnesota so we know mosquitoes. Price. It’s expensive. You can stay other places in Florida for much less. But if you check prices around Key West which we’ve been doing since we got here, Ted’s prices are competitive. Not a bargain but definitely worth the money. We would definitely stay here again but if you're staying a month or more, I'd get one of Ted's larger units. Or you'd better be crazy in love with each other like we are.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for the response. It was a pleasure servicing you. His comments about Key West , it is not cheap, nothing cheap about it. Folks, you can only imagine, how much Real Estate costs and the cost to keep things real nice, labor etc. The closer you get to Duval Street? The more things cost; throw in a pool and even more. My compound, is only one block from Duval Street, but my prices are not at the Crazy Duval Street pricing. And I have a nice sized pool, that is heated 24/7. One thing about prices in Key West? It does keep out the rift-raft, as those types, can't afford to stay in K.W. I hope to see yah back soon. Thanks again!

My boyfriend and I just got back from this property. We stayed there for 4 nights before we stayed at another key. The property is absolutely beautiful and is very close to all of the action. We stayed in the smallest cottage; which is all that we needed because we didn’t spend much time at all in the cottage. It was perfect and clean. When we were there, we mostly hung out on the deck and it was beautiful. So was the pool. We also got to check out another one of the cottages; which was a lot bigger and was gorgeous!!! If you are looking for a nice place to stay and don’t need anything too big, stay at the little one. If you plan to spend a little more time in the cottage, pick one of the more spacious ones. Either way, you will be very happy. Everyone does a great job to make the property perfect for you. In addition, Ted had bikes for us to use and we used them just about every day; which was extremely great. However, if you don’t want to bike, Duval is very close and you won’t have any trouble getting around by foot. To sum this up, the property is beautiful. The cottages are very well kept and clean. You have the ability to cook out on grills if you would like. Can't beat the price for being so close to everything! We had a great time and will definitely be back... We might even bring some friends and rent out a couple of his beautiful cottages at the same time!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

My husband and I just returned from a week in Sago. The unit is small, as described, but it was just what we were looking for -- a comfortable place within walking distance to the main area of Key West. There were quite a few handymen on the premises when we were there, doing tile, working on roofing, etc. but they were all friendly and did not disturb us in the least. The property manager - Christina is a great lady and we very much enjoyed meeting her. It is obvious from the work being done and the care being taken by those on site that this property is well-loved.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for your review. We do constantly work on the compound, to bring it to the standards that I expect from my compound. As you mentioned, we / I make sure that whatever we do, such as all the tile work.If anything that can be done off-site so we don't disturb anyone's vacation, even though it costs me more? That will be the way we do things. As many know, lot's of folks rent places and then get there and are disappointed. But, I can promise you this; that will not be the case at Petronia Palms. Thanks!

This is mainly in response to the nasty comment below! I found Petronia Palms on www.vrbo.com the week before our intended trip. (Our stay was May 30th – June 6th.) I was surprised to hear that Ted (the owner) still had a cottage available and even more surprised to hear about the price. It was WELL below anywhere else we had found. My husband and I were very excited about the price and the location (1 1/2 blocks off Duval). We booked immediately. Ted was very easy to work with and the payment (via PayPal) went through quickly and with no issues. We made the trip down to the compound and fell in love immediately. We met Christina who helped us get all settled in and we were ready to go. We rented the Sago Palm (the smallest of the 4 units). I have to say, it was a little smaller than I had hoped. In the ad, Ted was very honest in saying it was small so I knew it would be. I just hoped it would have been a little bigger. Either way, it was a beautiful cottage and very private. It had everything we could have needed or wanted for our week away from home. It was cozy. We even had a little private sitting area (complete with comfy chairs) out front. Let me say, we LOVED that. It is very wooded back there and there were lots of lizards. On our first night there, we sat outside on our patio and had a few beers and just took in the beautiful scenery. Being from Florida, I know mosquito season so we came prepared. They are outside and there isn’t a whole lot of avoiding them. We brought some OFF (mosquito spray) and were prepared to use it. My husband and I sat outside there for about 2 hours that first evening (prime time for mosquitoes) and not once did we have to use our spray. We didn’t even have to use the mosquito fog or citronella candle (provided by Ted). For the rest of the week, we spent a LOT of time out there along with our neighbors and never had any problems. There were a couple of nights I lit the citronella candle, but that was only to get a little light. It was nice to sit outside and listen to the nothingness by candle light. So, in short (or long as the case may be), we LOVED Petronia Palms AND the Sago Palm. We had no issues. Anytime we needed anything, Christina was there to help. We, hopefully, will be back!!!Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway.
Owner response: I appreciate your honest and nice review. I have addressed the size issue. We are currently adding to the size of this cottage, so that there will a little more space, and I won't be changing the nightly rate. Thanks Again!

I have to respond to the two complaints concerning the mosquitos. We were staying in the Date Palm when these two women checked in with their child. We had been there a couple of days and not found the mosquitos to be any worse than any tropical climate we've been to. In fact, they were not as bad as where we live in Alaska. I was also there when the Mosquito Abatement Service came. I was interested so I walked around with him while he checked for standing water and mosquito larvae--he found none. Our experience at Petronia Palms was wonderful. Ted, the owner, was great to work with and Christina and Dale was very helpful and responsive to any request or question. We viewed all the cottages and they are all great. Ted is having them all completely updated and they are clean and well maintained. Dale was working on the one unit while we were there but it was not in the least disturbing. I think the couple who rented the Sago Palm just thought it was too small for the three of them even though it is listed as a studio which sleeps 1 or 2. I hope their comments won't keep you from taking advantage of a wonderful experience at Petronia Palms!Owner response: Thanks for your kind words. You nailed it right on the head. They told me only 2 people were checking in and tried to bring in 3 for a space that only 2 are allowed. They have been a real pain and have been such a pain, that I have had to file a lawsuit against them. I have never had to do that, but they have pushed me past the point of no return, with their outright lies. I appreciate your comments. Thanks!

Mosquito Pit!!! Horrible vehicle access! Zero Parking. Owner claims to have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on reovations to property - He deserves a refund. Floor is sanded down plywood. Pictures are misleading to say the least. It was so bad we could not stay there and when I contacted the owner he wanted to argue from his place in California how nice the place was. We stayed at a hotel blocks away with NO MOSQUITOS nor mosquito problems!Owner response: I can't believe that I must deal with flat out lies and this person can say whatever she wants, and it must be posted and she never stayed in my compound. First of all I have 2 (TWO) front private parking spots,(Look at the pictures) right infront of my compound. I also provide additional parking right around the corner. I don't charge for these parking spots and everyone else near Duval Street, charges at least $10 dollars a day for their private parking . The floor, is a set of expensive individual strips of Rare Florida Dade Pine knotted hardwood and was installed at anything but a cheap price. That type of hardwood is very expensive and rare. When this person called, her first comments was about the size, then she came up with the Mosquito response. I immediately, yes immediately told her, if there was an issue, we would flog the outside and and also purchase citronella candles and have Mosquito abatement make a visit. Which , all was taken care of immediately. The Mosquitos were outside, like they are everywhere in Key West, during this time of the Year. There are Mosquitos, Geckos, termites, snails, cats, sand fleas on the beaches and many other critters that come with Tropical locations. I spoke with this Lady the minute she called and when she realized that I could and would and did resolve the issue she had, with Mosquitos Outside? Not inside! She then changed her story and would not return our many calls from either myself or my Property Manager. I even offered her my largest cottage, The " Royal Palm cottage", that runs 3 times the nightly rate she paid for this smallest unit. She said, what if Mosquitos are there too? and declined my offer! I don't know what she meant by, I deserve a refund? I offered her my largest most expensie unit, during her stay, while her issue was taken care of. I did have Mosquito Abatement come out and they said, there was nothing going on with Mosquitos, other than this was and is the Mosquito season. They did do their normal Mosquito service and this is done on a regular basis in the Key's and my property too. There are 4 cottages in my compound and we even checked with all the other folks staying, and none of them had any issues with Mosquitos. Maybe I need to consider a slander suit against a person that had blantenly lied and had another motive. The pictures show exactly what it looks like, minus any Mosquitos. Bottom-line, she was upset about the size and they didn't want to share a bed . This only sleeps 2.

My wife and i just completed our yearly trip to Key West and stayed at Petronia Palms. We stayed in the smallest of the 4 units and couldn't have been happier. We've stayed in the nicer hotels that the island has to offer and enjoyed our stay here as much and at considerable savings. Upon arrival our room was neat, clean and ready for our occupancy. The property manager was there to greet us and make sure our needs were met. We almost considered her a friend by the time we departed. The location is perfect as situated, less than 2 Key West blocks from the "500 block" of Duval. We enjoyed the bikes provided by the owner and used them daily. They were by no means "new, high-end" bikes but they were as expected, dependable and met the general standards of "the local" bikes being used throughout. The pool area was neat, clean and well kept. The grounds were neat, clean and kept as well. There was some minor upkeep during our trip, cleaning of the common areas as can be expected, but it in no way interfered with our trip. I took the time to sweep our steps each morning as leaves would fall in the evening from the island breezes. Our deck was spacious and included a bbq grill that we didn't get a chance to use. I was fortunate enough to tour all four units on the secure property and am looking forward to our stay in all of them. The deck areas of all units are incredible. Our unit being the smallest was no more than a hotel room in size but i suited our particular needs perfectly. The thing i appreciated the most was the island feel of the units as well as the secure feeling of the property. It definitely makes my travel plans easy the next time.Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: I appreciate your kind comments. This cottage does offer a prime location and not at a prime price. Because of the size, I am able to make it very Affordable. We all work real hard to make my compound real nice. Thanks!

I just went to look about finally writing a nice review for the Sago Palm Cottage. I happened to see some person, totally complained about the cottage and it appears she did not even stay there. Now I did, for the month prior to this person's comment. I just loved the Sago Palm cottage. For the price and the location, no one can beat it. One short block from Duval Street too. The cottage has everything provided, just as the larger cottages, which are also owned by the same person. I was able to peek in all the other cottages, and he has spent a small fortune in each of his cottages, doing complete updates, such as tile work was being done at the time I was there, re-doing all the outside decking. He was even adding additional living space to my cottage, to make it that much more comfortable. I must say, having a private deck, access and free use of multiple bicycles, my own BBQ, wifi, cable, etc. what a deal. I should say, the owner does have two private parking spots too. I parked there, myself. This compound is a hidden gem. The pool was awesome, and most the time, I had it to myself. And I need to say, what Mosquito's? I was in the same cottage that this other person wrote about too. I almost hate to tell everyone about it, as I am planning to become an annual returning vacationer. I already booked my month for next year. Look at all the pictures, this owner has done everything he can and still is, making this compound a great place to stay. Thanks to the owner and his property manager. You made my stay a wonderful one.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind words. I have spent a fortune to make this cottage, as well as my others as nice They can be. This week, we tiled all of the countertops in every cottage. All the tubs and showers are being re-glazed. The outside decking, is completely being redone. Of course all this work is being done to not impact anyone's stay. For example, all the tile has/had been cut prior to installation, at another location and not in/on the compound. Other upgrades only take place, when there are openings in-between stays. All the Bicycles, which are provided for free have been completely re-painted and serviced, which is done on a regular basis. I have done constant improvements, and do everything possible not to disturb any vacationer's stay. I will be updating some pictures with newly completed projects. I am sure most can tell by my pictures, that this compound has a lot to offer and is as cute as it gets.

My husband and I have just completed a 6 week stay in this unit. Petronia Palms is conveniently located in a quiet neighborhood, but it's an easy, short walk to DuVal Street and all of the action. The complex is completely fenced with a security door entrance. The 4 cottages share one pool, but we had plenty of privacy and time to enjoy the pool and grounds to ourselves, and other opportunities to visit with our neighbors if we felt like socializing. Each unit has a covered porch/outdoor living area which is a HUGE plus in Key West. We enjoyed grilling, reading and eating out on the porch, and our dog enjoyed sleeping in the sun and chasing the Salamanders when he was awake. Privacy is a rare amenity in most K.W. rentals but we had plenty of it in this unit/complex. The unit is well outfitted and the owner is attentive to providing anything that might be missing during your stay. Bikes are provided which saved us from paying costly rental fees. The furnishings are adequate and we were able to settle in quite comfortably for our 6 week stay. We particularly enjoyed this location because it's a bit off the beaten path in an eclectic neighborhood with a variety of the cultures that Key West is so well known for. Local churches in the neighborhood are active with caring parishioners who watch over their neighborhood and take great pride in their community. Since the complex is near the halfway point of DuVal St. we didn't have to travel far (on bike or foot) whether we wanted to go to the beaches, Mallory Square, tropical gardens, restaurants, clubs, art galleries, or simply walk our dog down the beautiful, garden rich streets of Old Town or the funky decorated yards of Bahama Village. There's plenty of room in the unit for your personal items such as clothing, toiletries, books, etc. We were able to work successfully from home due to a consistent wireless network. During our stay we had a neighbor in the next unit who was an artist. He too had plenty of privacy and also found the environment to be creative, relaxing and productive for his work We would recommend this rental unit and in fact are planning to return for another stay next winter. Also hate to share this new secret place but it looks like the word is out. I'll just make sure to book my month year to year to keep it from the rest of the mobs who will soon find this gem!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband, sister and I had a wonderful stay in the Date Palm Cottage. We arrived late at night and were greeted with a friendly welcome note for the property keeper, Dale. Dale had shampooed all the carpeting before we came. The cottage was spotless, cheerful and roomy. Dale was available to take care of anything and everything we needed. Having bikes at our disposal all week made it very easy for us to get around . We enjoyed the private aspect of the Petronia Palms but were very close to Duval Street. You do not need a car in Old Town Key West!!!!!!!!!!! I would recommend this cottage and complex. If you go to Key West try the Vegetarian Cafe for a great meal. The servings are huge and delicious. Go for a moonlight sail. Take the night kayak trip through the mangroves. Visit the old Curry Mansion and other old houses that are open to the public. See a play at the local theater by Mallory Square and don't miss the Butterfly Conservatory and Nancy Forrester's Secret Garden. Relax in the pool at Petronia Palms!!!!!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband and I stayed in this property in late January 2010 for two weeks. Our experience here was the first bad one we have ever had with a VRBO property and we have rented through them on numerour occasions. When we arrived the unit was not cleaned, we contacted Dale and he responded that he thought we were arriving the next day and he would have it ready in an hour. When we returned the bed had been made but the dirty sheets and towels were left to be laundered by us! The unit was not clean and since there is no carpet I don't know how the carpet in this unit was cleaned (see other review) so I don't think that is a review for this unit. After this, Dale was nowhere to be found for several days and the pool and rest of the compound desperately needed attention. This unit is so small there is no place to sit comfortably besides the bed. A couple of backless stools are provided, but that is the extent of seating unless you sit outside There is about two feet from the end of the bed to the door and about a foot on either side of the bed to get around. The photos are fairly accurate if you look at them closely. No place to hang anything and no place to eat if you want to cook at home. The bikes that were noted were in such bad condition they could not be used. The tenants from the other three units had similar situations with the cleanliness of their space as well. After our stay I complained to the owner and he reacted poorly to my issues.Owner response: Only 10 minutes after my last long term folks were checking out. I received a call stating that they attempted to check in, early. They were upset that the place was not clean. I told them that the last folks just left, and that we needed the 3 normal hours to do the cleaning. They were not happy about that and they were completely unreasonable and felt that an early check-in was allowed, or something. As for the pool and compound being slightly in disarray? There happened to be some large storms during that time and no matter what was picked up and cleaned, literally 1/2 hour after a complete clean-up, with the strong winds, items fell back on the ground and pool. This was in January 2010, and Key West had an abnormal cold spell and heavy winds and down pours. I even purchased mobile heaters for everyone. As for small? They understood, as my ad specifically states. This is a small studio cottage with a small price. I spoke with them from day one and I even offered them a way out and said they could move elsewhere and get a complete refund. They declined and stayed. Because they understood, they could never find anything in Key West for such a small price. My other cottages run over twice what they paid per night. It was only an after thought, after their stay , as they then attempted to request a refund after using and staying their entire booked nights. They mention the pictures are accurate, and yes they are. This is cute small studio cottage. I have had many folks stay there for months with no problems, and most have all re-booked. As for no place to eat? There is a table in the cottage and outdoor seating outside too. Look at the pictures. They are correct about no place to hang clothes, that was why I had many dressers provided. This problem has been solved with an addition for more storage and hanging of items. Again, this is a small studio cottage. For the bikes, these are offered for free, at no charge, at my expense. I offer bikes for no additional cost and the bikes are rotated on a service schedule. Unfortunately, most folks just leave them in the rain and don't take care of them. I thought by providing bikes, this could save vacationers from having the added expense from renting bikes at around $59 dollars a week. No matter what I tried to do, these folks were not going to be happy or pleased. You can't please everybody, and these were the only folks that I could not make happy. Thanks The Owner!

My wife and I fully recommended the Petronia Palm Cottages. Grand Palm cottage and other 2 in compound are just as you see--fantastic.-owner took possession in Oct 2008.All units were recently painted, new furniture, great styling's in each cottage--one has Hemmingway motif--everything listed is provided, kitchen appliances, utensils, bedding, towels, gas BBQ,washer dryer, dishwasher full size refridge, bikes.Units are centrally located off Duval so all in walking distance-a little more than 1/2 mile to Mallory sq at one end and South beach at the other.Ft Zachary Taylor is about 20-25 min walk-we did not have or need car at all and we are 60+.pool added to our enjoyment Owner does great job of screening guests as the 5 other couples 3 someone's that were there were all friendly and we related easily even when age differed -20's Security of entrance adds to relaxing. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner and his son who stayed a week while we were there. He himself worked most of the week in addition to a maintenance man to keep all of the units clean and property top notch--many new tropical plantings were added during our stay. "This complex has three small cottages that share a wonderful small pool and well landscaped plot tucked back off the main streets. It is very well maintained and appointed, close to the main shops and restaurants yet amazingly peaceful and quiet. There is a terrific handyman/caretaker that takes care of any problems or needs that may arise (very few) in the complex. The furniture and bed were comfortable and there were plenty of towels and kitchen supplies. I would recommend this place to a friend and will definitely try to stay there again soon."Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We stayed at Petronia Palms for a week in May, 2009. The location is really wonderful. You are close to everything but the neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. Petronia Palms has the look and feel of old Key West. The owner has been careful to keep the character of the conch houses while making them lovely, comfortable and modern. The pool is great and the landscaping is charming. The private patio decks are a peaceful, cool oasis. The units are well equipped and maintained. The caretaker is very accessible and responds to requests promptly. We had the chance to meet Ted, the owner, who was also there doing more renovations during our visit. He is enthusiastic about his property and a good landlord. We will definitely return.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

I must say, we found a wonderful gem in Key West called Petronia Palms, just a block or so off of Duval Street, but was the most pleasant stay we have ever had. The owner has thought of everything, from an awesome tropical setting outside with cute decorations throughout the compound and the pool area to custom individualized decor in his 4 cottages in the beautiful compound. Each cottage has internet, cable, a safe, wifi, phone,BBQ's,private deck,washers/dryers,outside furniture. Everything you possibly need inside each cottage. 6 bicycles for use and handyman that does everything in a moment’s time, he even took us fishing and provided everything at no cost. He even brought us fresh fish a few times. His pricing is very very reasonable, and he has come to the plate with whatever had been promised. He even heated the pool for us, since it got a little cool for Key West terms. You need to check them out! What a deal!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

"We met the owner just after he purchased this compound in 2008 and while we were waiting to buy a house, we stayed in two of the four newly renovated cottages. This little compound is a cute retreat from what can be a noisy tourist town. Though you're about a block away from Duval Street, the Petronia Palms compound is a hidden treasure down a short lane (known locally as "Loco Lane") and is remarkably quiet and peaceful amid the bustle of Old Town. The cottages are terminally cute, painted and decorated in bright, tropical colors with Caribbean-style artwork and decor and they share a large (for Key West) swimming pool (heated). The furnished cottages have brand new furniture, linens, dishes, and a variety of thoughtfully chosen extras you don't expect. They each have a private patio area and lovely plantings. Though a small compound, it is well kept and pretty and this particular one had a fancy outdoor grill that we used every day. A local maintenance man responded quickly to any little problems we discovered. The description of the compound and of this cottage is completely accurate and not overstated and the owner is flexible in responding to your needs. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and meeting the other occupants. That is one benefit of staying on a compound--you can become acquainted with other vacationers while living in a private cottage. I highly recommend Petronia Palms to Key West visitors. You don't need to rent a car, as everything is within walking distance or can easily be reached by bicycle, motor scooter, or taxiDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
