Spanish wells is a small island 50 east of Nassau. Spanish Wells can be reached by ferry from Nassau or commercial airlines from the US and Nassau. Spanish Wells has a gorgeous 2 mile long sugary pink sand beach. The water is clear and calm and the sand extends out for over 100 yards, perfect for small children. The 20 mile long Devil's Backbone reef 1/4 mile offshore offers fantastic fishing and snorkeling. Skiffs and golf carts are available for rent in the village and guides available for fishing, snorkeling or diving.
The friendly village people are very proud of their neat and colorful homes, flower filled yards and clean, crime free community. The village provides good grocery stores, pharmacy, bank with ATM, medical care and shopping.
Our beach front home has a wraparound porch on 3 sides and balconies off of both upstairs bedrooms. French doors on 3 sides of the house provide excellent cross ventilation and ocean breezes.

Beautiful Home and Charming Island

Our group of 11 just spent seven wonderful days at this wonderful beachfront home, its beachfront location was breathtaking, each morning we strolled down to the beach and enjoyed our coffee...the house is spacious, clean and very accomading to a larger group, the pictures do not do it justice. The kayaks and beach chairs were always put to good use. The house had everything we needed and more... We certainly heard mixed reviews of the Island itself, we found it to be a hidden gem... the people were friendly and accomadating, we met a local couple who took us snorkeling and brought us crawfish so kind and unexpected! we took the kids fishing with Ryan and had the times of our lives. The boys caught plenty of fish and we then had a great supper! The Island is small and quiet and does not have the "busy tourist" life of nassau but that is exactly what we loved about it..we will return again... we travelled with 5 teenagers who all agreed we should have skipped nassau and spent two weeks on Spanish wells.. Thanks Joe and Bev for sharing your home and little piece of paradise....

My wife and I vacationed in this house on the beach for one week between Nov 26th and Dec 3rd of 2011. We found this property after a LOT of searching on vrbo and other websites. Spanish Wells and Russell Island are 'sister' islands connected to each other by a 150-foot long bridge. The former is about 2 miles long x half a mile wide and is where most of the village lives. Russell Island is the nicer of the two and is about 4 miles long x half a mile wide. This particular house is located on Russell Island just a couple of minutes walk from the bridge. There is a wide, clean expanse of sandy beach right in front of the house, which has shallow, clear water covering it at high tide (but only upto knee height!). At low tide, you can walk across this sand bar to the Spanish Wells side and walk for two miles along a clean, soft, sandy beach. The waters there are deeper if you want to swim, but still quite calm. In our seven days there, we walked on this beach daily and saw a total of four other people! The locals are friendly, there are a couple of 'restaurants' in town serving mainly fish. There is one smallish supermarket in town and another such store which carry an assortment of groceries. But the produce only comes in by boat on Thursdays and is usually gone by Saturday. No bars or liquor stores on either island, which suited us fine, but you can buy alcohol on the other side in Eleuthera at the dock where you catch the ferry that takes you across to Spanish Wells. You fly into North Eleuthera airport (ELH) from Florida or from Nassau (the capital of the Bahamas), then catch a car that takes you to the ferry to Spanish Wells. The house itself was clean, spacious and very well-equipped. There are kayaks and bicyles aplenty for use by the guests. The caretaker Johnny met us at the ferry the day we arrived and took us there and showed us where everything was. As soon as we walked into the living room and looked out at the blue waters and sandy beach right outside, we knew that we had made a great choice. The owners are nice, friendly folks who live in America and seem to have built it for their own use and their family's. We cooked simple meals on the gas range and ate them while sitting on the wide porch overlooking the beach. We even baked brownies one day! Rent this house with confidence! Beware of another person (a prominent realtor there) who has lousy properties for rent on vrbo that are NOWHERE close to nice - we saw them from the outside!

This was our 7th year to vacation on Spanish Wells and our first time to stay at the Beach House. We were really were surprised by how nice the house is- the pictures do not do it justice. It was clean and spacious, very comfortable beds and had a more homey feel than some of the rentals we have had in the past on this island. Wonderful walk in showers! The kayaks were a real bonus and can be easily used in the bay in front of the house or for the exploration of Pierre's rock. The house has a nice porch that looks out on the shallow bay which is also great for very safe swimming for kids. You can also view the sunset from the beach in front of the house and they are usually spectacular ! We found that the kitchen is already plentifully supplied with spices and some food items and we just added some of our own- this was a real plus when you only need a little of something- ( we've usually found completely empty cupboards when we arrive at other rentals). We scuba dived on the reef and the wreak, we spear fished and had many delicious dinners from our catch. If you go to the church on the island the locals will get to know you more and kind of look for you- we were brought piles of mangos ! Be sure to visit Kathy's bakery for fresh baked bread in the mornings- the best.
