Wonderful oceanfront cottage for couple or small family. White sand beach with shady palms for sunning and easy entry to the best Snorkeling and Swimming in the world. Nearby Tidal pools and reefs are a "salt water academy." Beach and palm trees, views and peaceful residential setting are of "old Hawaii."
Cottage is not luxurious but simple, yet has everything you need. Big deck, interior or exterior eating, GREAT King beds plus queen bed. Ceiling fans. Property is 1/3 acre. Neighbors are near but not close. Cross a wooden footbridge and natural fish pond to access cottage from parking area and rural street. Great area for biking, jogging, walking, exploring. World class restaurants, golfing, shopping a short drive away.

Over the 15 plus years we have enjoyed this modest cabin, we have walked the beach from the south end of Puako Drive to the north, viewing the other larger, fancier homes and none compare to the easy access at 82 for water activities-paddle boards, canoes, snorkeling, etc. The unusual entry pond is attractive and isolates the cabin from traffic and for a family, interesting and educational. The sea turtles give it a flipper up as a napping spot and so do we! We enjoy our 6 AM Kona coffee sitting under the palms in the Adirondack beach chairs. It is a wonderful family experience or a quiet couples getaway. If you feel the need for variety, famous resorts and restaurants are just a short drive away. The local store is very convenient. The cabin owners are friendly "natives".Recommended for: Age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Though we come here often, I am surprised there are so few reviews.(I just heard that if a place has no or few reviews I shouldn't think of going there so I googled this to see what others said about 82 Puako.) Well,I think perhaps many visitors want to keep their favorite places a bit of a secret, as do I. Most of the people that write in the house guest-book have been using this home for many years. I think the reviews written are accurate, tho we often share the house with other couples whom we have camped or traveled with before so the setup of the house is within our comfort. The oceanfrontage is about the BEST in all of Puako.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This little cottage is basically a one-room affair, but it's clean and neat and cozy for a couple, and the front yard is fabulous. First, there's a gigantic front porch, darn near as big as the cabin, for those days you want a little shelter. Beyond the porch is a postcard beach beneath palm trees, and that's basically where I lived here. It sits right above the high tide line, and on a high tide night with the full moon above, wow. Who cares what's on TV? I really loved this place, it's got family history built into it, and the view from the beach is perfect, it's just beach city. Check it out, Puako is ideally located to explore the island.Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

My wife and I stayed at Waipunalei in 1992 for a week on a first trip together to the Big Island. We've stayed at other houses in Puako since then, but this sea cabin holds a very special place in our hearts. We'd flown into Hilo with no hotel reservations and found this place in a rentals section of the paper advertised by Sandy Ednie. We settled in next to the fish pond, the great snorkeling, turtles, nice little beach and BBQ, and just ate out of the Puako General Store for our whole time! So beautiful --- what else could one want?!! We have teenage kids now, and while you certainly can sleep four adults there, it would be close accomodations since the bedrooms have curtains rather than doors. It's a rustic and charming place for young/old couples, or a couple with very young kids. The sound of the waves just feet from the bedroom, along with the trade winds will give you the best night's sleep you've ever had! Old Hawaii at its best!Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, families with young children.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1976
About the owner: I grew up in the islands, child of Hawaii, graduate of Punahou. Our family has roots here, since the days of the monarchy. We know no other home, though we are college graduates of mainland universities (and world travelers.) I love the ranches of Waimea and the oceanfront of Puako, the horses and the fish, the greens and the blues of grass, sea, sky. I am older now, and not full of strong opinions. I love to hear the personal stories of each person that comes to Puako, so unique, so endearing. I look forward to meeting you.
Why the Owner Chose Puako:
This is our family beach house. We have owned on this oceanfront since its inception in the 1950's. It represents peace, paradise, sharing and caring. There is no finer oceanfrontage. Its like swimming in a giant aquarium, or kayaking the coast for a personal adventure.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Right on a swimable, snorkeling oceanfrontage and white sand beach.Cool tradewinds, beautiful water, turtles sunning on the rocks, Maui and the Kohala Mountains to view, ever changing, ever interesting. Whales cavort all winter with their splashing and birthing of their young.
