Harpers Ferry house description

This is the only vacation rental located in the heart of historic downtown Harpers Ferry, and in the middle of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. This one-of-a-kind vacation rental is located in a 2-1/2 story brick federal-period building built in the 1830's, and renovated in 2004-2005. The house shares the building with a boutique wine shop (Harpers Ferry Wine & Gourmet) and a family-style restaurant (Secret Six Tavern). The house was originally 2 townhouses, and the center walls were removed in the 1970s to create a large open space on the 1st floor. While the house's exterior painting scheme reflects this original configuration and looks like 2 separate units, the vacation rental spans both spaces (see photo). The building was used during the civil war by both Confederate and Union Armies, primarily as an infirmary/hospital, and is a stop on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour.

The first floor of the house features a large open living room/dining room, a full modern kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch with fantastic mountain and river views and views of Harpers Ferry gap. The inside space features hard-wood floors, exposed brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling (many of the beams are original hand-hewn), and large windows looking onto the mountains and the Potomac River. There is a TV, DVD player, VCR, games and toys, and a 10-seat dining table on the 1st floor. A highchair is available upon request. In addition to modern amenities, the house is decorated in fantastic period antiques.

The second floor has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a laundry room w/ full-sized washer and dryer, and offers views of the Potomac River. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a comfortable full-size futon (comfortable for 1 adult or 2 children). The second bedroom has a Queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom has a twin/full bunk bed (twin on top; full on bottom). The configuration is ideal for two families (4 adults and up to 5 kids), 2-3 couples, or 6-7 friends! All three bedrooms have TVs and DVD players and comfy sheets, mattresses and pillows.

The building sits atop a steep hill, and there are 65 stairs leading down to the 2 parking spaces reserved for the vacation rental in the rear of the building. The front-door to the house is at street-level, so door-to-door drop-off of luggage is possible.

This is a gem smack-dab in the heart of Harpers Ferry. You can easily walk to all the historical sites. The kitchen is the best-equipped I've ever seen in a rental unit, with every tool you migh possibly need. And the "basic spices" promised in the description are in fact more than 15 spices. The living room is gorgeous, with views over the train station and the Potomac river. There is a big, comfy sofa and several chairs for you and your friends to relax on while you drink the surprisingly good complimentary bottle of wine the owner has left for you. The three bedrooms upstairs are nice. The second bedroom has a claw-foot tub that is a bit difficult to use, but history buffs will like it. All in all, this is a spectacular rental and very highly recommended.

Five of us decided to make a trip to Harper's Ferry for the weekend and after reading the reviews we felt that this house would meet all our requirements. We were not disappointed. The house was wonderful. You walk into a big open living room that has very comfy sofas in front of a pellet stove (warmer than wood burning!). We all decided to stay in the first night so we could make the most of the coziness. With the fire on, we made snacks in the well equipped kitchen, sat on the sofas and just talked and laughed for several hours. Upstairs were the bedrooms and main bathrooms. Very tastefully decorated and very clean and inviting. Our one and only complaint and one that cannot be remedied was the freight trains that decided to run during the sleeping hours. The owner provides air purifiers in each room and these do help to drown out the noise a little. That being said, we've all decided that we would return in a heart beat to enjoy the home again and the natural beauty of Harper's Ferry and it's surroundings. We were all a little sad that our weekend came to a close so quickly.

Recommended for: Girls getaway, sightseeing, tourists without a car.

Mountainside Lodge in Harpers Ferry is my all-time favorite retreat. The house is an impeccable example of period architecture amply furnished with every possible convenience, including very comfortable beds, numerous baths, and modern appliances including a washer and dryer. The decor is unpretentious yet elegant in the selection of relaxing color schemes, especially with regard to emphasizing the lovely woodwork. Numerous intriguing antiques and paintings are distributed throughout the house, adding to the marvelous ambiance. The large downstairs room easily seats ten adults comfortably on luxurious, well-arranged sofas. There's a fully-equipped modern kitchen, too. Everything is sparkling clean. Window views of the Appalachian Mountains and the railroad transport you to another era. Our host thoughtfully provided shelves filled with interesting books and travel magazines, and for those who need it, several television sets with premium cable service at the ready. This is impeccably-maintained, spacious yet cozy lodge that creates an enchanting and memorable experience.

Our stay was perfect! Very spacious - there was just two of us, plus two dogs, but we could've invited many more to stay with us if we had desired. Modern, equipped kitchen, central location, great views, nice deck to hang out on. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone. Thanks!

We reserved this lovely house for a bridal shower weekend away. What a gem! We all loved the large gathering space and the walkability from the house all over town. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to cook breakfasts and dinners. And the porch was amazing to sit on and watch the sunset. It was also very nice to have the two parking spots for the weekend due to the limited parking in town. The owner was very, very easy to work with. Everything we needed to know for the weekend was sent to us well ahead of time. I would highly recommend this rental to others. We hope to rent this house again in the future.

My family of 4, plus our 2 nieces & 2 dogs stayed for a 3 day weekend. We arrived at night & everything was dark, adding to our anticipation. We didn't choose to do the Ghost Tour & were happy that we didn't encounter any here. The house is very well renovated and places you back in time for a moment. It's location made it perfect for strolling down to the river to swim or tube. Even the dogs enjoyed the water (and of course the house). The deck goes across the entire rear of the house & you can see the train station & the river, as well as the beautiful mountains. If you don't want to cook in the lovely, well equipped kitchen, there are lots of restaurants within walking distance. We also took a short drive to River Riders to experience tubing the white waters. Perfect for the whole family! Once you stay here, you'll definitely want to return!

What an awesome place! The home was decorated to fit perfectly into the charm & history of Harper's Ferry. The rooms are spacious and clean with the perfect blend of antique & modern conveniences. The owners went out of their way to provide all the comforts of home (including a complimentary bottle of wine). I thought the location would be noisy, but it wasn't at all...except for the passing trains in the background. You could see the trains from the back deck. We walked down to the river (which was really close) and swam & tubed. River Riders was a short drive where there are activities to keep you & your family busy all day. We did the tubing & white water rafting. There are also lots of restaurants within walking distance. We had a couple of delicious meals right across the street. Jill returns all e-mails & texts promptly, if you have any questions. This is on our list of places to return to!

Our extended family, including 2 small children, enjoyed a 3 day stay in this charming, comfortable historic home. The trains were a delight to all of us. We also enjoyed evening strolls around the quiet streets of Harper's Ferry. We hiked along the C&O canal to the Weverton Cliffs trail and back, which was a great day hike. The owners are very welcoming and available to guests to answer questions or address problems. The home is clean, well-maintained with a well stocked kitchen. We look forward to another visit in the future!

My sisters and cousins rented this house for our yearly Girls Weekend Getaway. This is the perfect house for a weekend getaway with friends or for even a romantic weekend with your significant other. The house is spacious and charming, and it's well decorated and furnished with comfortable furnishings and some quirky pieces of art (Lincoln's painting and his wandering eyes). My family and I have rented alot of houses throughout the years and this house is the most well-equipped one thus far. It even has a hair-dryer which many times I forget to pack for a trip! Jill was extremely accommodating and gracious hostess. We stopped by her shop when we arrived to thank her for the rental and she told us to call her if we needed anything, but the house had everything, so we were just fine! Would definitely recommend the house to friends and anyone who wants to stay in an historic town in charming house.

This house is gorgeous inside with an enormous living-dining room, a fully equipped kitchen and very comfortable bedrooms. It was a perfect place for our group to meet and stay. The porch gives a wonderful view of the Potomac River and the historically famous cliffs of Maryland Heights. Right in the middle of Harpers Ferry, this house is perfect for exploring local shops, museums, and hiking spots.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
This is the ONLY vacation rental located in the heart of downtown historic Harpers Ferry and in the middle of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. It offers fantastic views, historic charm and significance, and prime location. It is amongst museums, shops & restaurants, steps from the Potomac & Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O canal towpath, Jefferson Rock (which Thomas Jefferson declared was 'worth a trip across the Atlantic'), Virginius Island, the Appalachian Trail, Maryland Height and Loudoun Heights. Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is a short drive away, as are a number of Virginia Wineries. There is a large porch that looks onto the mountains, the Potomac River, and Harpers Ferry gap. Kids (and train-loving grown-ups) love to watch the trains pass on the very active rail line and you can even ride the train to this destination, as it is in walking distance to the Harpers Ferry train station, which services both MARC and AMTRAK. The house is bicycle friendly (there is ample space inside to store bikes), and being within walking distance to the C&O canal towpath, is a perfect spot for towpath riders. If you don't bring your bike with you, there are bike rentals right in-town. There are fantastic hikes, from easy to strenuous, right outside the front door (no need to drive). The house offers a large open floor plan perfect for larger gatherings, and the whole home is clean, nicely furnished and maintained. We strive for customer service and try to provide everything that a guest might need, including detergents and hand soaps, sugar, salt, pepper, basic spices, coffee filters, toilet paper, papertowels, napkins, etc., etc., etc. Our guests tell us over and over that this is the most well-stocked vacation rental that they have ever visited.
