Slopeside at Union Pass is a handsome, contemporary alpine home clad in rough-cut pine, set amidst pine trees on the edge of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s Union Pass ski trail. Layered into the mountainside, the house has six levels as it climbs, in half-story increments, up the slope. This is a true alpine vacation home, genial and comfortable. The front door opens into an airy two-story great room, where a large wood-burning fireplace, deep armchairs, wrap-around couch and full bar immediately set a festive, holiday mood. Sky-high windows frame the forest outside and flood the room with light. The dining room is just off the great room; the long farmhouse table can seat ten, all within view of the living room fireplace. Perhaps best of all, Slopeside has a magnificent deck that functions, in all seasons, as a great room in the great outdoors. Long benches upholstered in crimson – the hue of the gondolas that soar silently overhead – surround an expansive table. The deck has two Frontgate grills, a wood-burning fireplace for chilly nights, and a huge hot tub. The cool, piney air, the ski slopes that pass right by the back door, the Teton wilderness all around: this is Wyoming living at its best.
Slopeside’s kitchen is a roomy, well-lit space fitted with high-quality modern appliances: double Thermador ovens, a Dacor 6-burner cooktop, a Subzero refrigerator. In the pantry, a second freezer and built-in cupboards provide ample food storage. A center island topped with smooth stone works perfectly for food prep or serve-yourself buffets, and a breakfast bar is outfitted with upholstered stools, pendant lamps and a view out to the deck and the woods beyond.
The kitchen opens into a family room, which has a stone fireplace and flat screen TV set into the bookshelves – both visible from the kitchen. Guests often gather here in early and evening hours, but on rainy days, Slopeside’s fabulous fourth floor rec room is the main attraction. This open, high-ceilinged space centers on a long pool table, overhung by a chandelier of golden glass. One side of the room holds rustic bunk beds for afternoon naps or overflow sleeping, the other, a TV. A door beside the bunks leads to a full bathroom, with both shower and tub.
A half-flight up from the great room, the master bedroom has a king bed and a corner gas fireplace built of stone. A ceiling of soaring angles and massive beams arches over the king bed, and its planes catch the light in subtle shades throughout the day. There is soft, wall-to-wall carpeting underfoot, a TV, and two walk-in closets. From the bed, a wide window looks out to the forest and the ski slopes that ribbon down the mountainside. A large, open, master bathroom has double sinks, two private toilets, a deep soaking tub in its own tiled alcove, with windows to the Tetons. A double-headed shower is in an opposite corner. Just outside the bedroom, a door leads directly down to the deck and hot tub.
Slopeside has three guest bedrooms, each roomy, light-filled and comfortable, each with its own bathroom, and its own particular charms. Two are on the fourth floor – one facing west, the other, southeast. The western bedroom has a triptych of windows set under a cathedral ceiling, with an elegant sofa and wide, rustic log bed. A band of mullioned windows in the southeast bedroom looks out over the front. This is a room of dark woods and rich fabrics. An antique chest holds extra blankets, and soft oatmeal carpeting continues right into the bathroom. The third guest bedroom is a lovely and private retreat high at the top of the house. Deep twin beds spread with matching quilts, lemon-colored light from the south-facing windows, a ceiling fan to cool the room, and a full bathroom make this bedroom feel like a private hideaway under the eaves.
Slopeside was built as a mountain retreat, a ski-in, ski-out vacation home on some of the country’s greatest slopes. But whatever the season, at Slopeside you are surrounded by endless opportunities for athletics and adventure. Rendezvous Mountain soars above, 10,450 feet at its breath-taking peak. Teton Village is minutes away by skis, snowboard, car or on foot. The wide connecting trail of Union Pass opens up right by Slopeside’s back door, and from there the trails and vast snowy bowls are yours to explore. Union Pass Connection leads into the Lower Gros Ventre on the southern side of Rendezvous Mountain – a fantastic, less developed area for serious skiers and novices alike seeking fresh powder. In summer, there are hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and a disc golf course is just steps away. Slopeside has plenty of space to store your gear and a workhorse of a laundry room to handle the results of your adventures. And, when the day is done, a massage therapist can soothe tired, well-used muscles in Slopeside’s own massage suite.
