The 70 acre BAUEN GUEST RANCH is a breath of fresh mountain air and clear blue skies all bundled together in an authentic ranch setting filled with rich Western Culture. At 5300' feet, the property sits in a rolling valley, cupped between the Big Horn foothills and Gay Creek on the north and south, reaching toward the Little Big Horn River and the Wolf Mountains on the west and east. Perfect for a family reunion, wedding, company retreat or a quiet getaway for you and yours to recharge and rejuvenate.
The BAUEN GUEST RANCH has six buildings that may be rented together or separately. This listing is based on a daily or weekly rental of the Log Cabin Home together with adjacent Guest House, sleeping 10-15. The minimum stay is three days.
Up a winding road at the top of a foothill facing north is a LOG HOME of 2650 sq ft with 5 small exterior decks. 1 wood-burning fireplace and 1 wood pellet stove plus electric baseboard if needed, providing 3 bedrooms (1 king, 2 doubles), 1 library (2 singles), 2 baths, and kitchen, dining areas and great room with piano, tv and internet, and an attached greenhouse of 400 sq ft, hot tub and sauna. A large rustic GUEST HOUSE/STUDIO is nearby, equipped with commercial kitchen, great light, internet, tv, gas fireplace, bathroom with shower, and two lofts sleeping 4-8. OUTBUILDINGS include two rustic LOG CABINS sleeping 18 each on futon-like mattresses in built-in bunk beds and a nearby BATHHOUSE with hot water, 8 showers, 8 sinks and 4 toilets with M/F sides. Outbuildings also include an INSULATED POLE BARN 36' by 55' with wood/coal burning stove and its' side room/office with sink/running water and galley kitchenette. A large OUTDOOR DECK stretches the length of the building. Two large TENTS and a TEEPEE with chairs and worktables are available for eating or programming. Directly east of the cabins is a large hilly area tucked into an aspen grove, with the CAMPFIRE as its focus. A beaver pond, hayfields, a badminton field and basketball hoop stretch out among the huge cottonwoods and aspen that line the creek bed.
The BAUEN GUEST RANCH is a uniquely isolated property, without visible neighbors or their buildings. The property provides the opportunity to live close to nature, producing quiet, with time to hike canyons and study stars, with bountiful space that seems to go on forever. The closest neighbors west are 2 miles away; the closest east are 5 miles away. The Kerns Wildlife Habitat, run by Wyoming Game & Fish, is the southern boundary of the property, with the property having its own private entrance to the 106 million acre Big Horn National Forest via the Habitat. There one can find trout fishing and rock climbing, hang gliding, hiking, mountain biking and camping. Here and there one is enlightened by the presence of elk, white-tailed deer, moose, black bear, coyote, wolves, porcupines, wild turkey, partridge, rabbits, eagle and hawk, hummingbirds, wrens, the rufous-breasted towhee and the red-winged blackbird. The property is in the hands of one owner and is zoned Agriculture, with a working ranch surrounding its' north, east and west boundaries. Neighbors are bonafide cowboys who still lead Pass Creek cattle drives and save newborns from blizzards. Their bosses love this country as much as they do.
Ranches in the area run cattle, raise hay and corn, and a few still keep a traditional farm, with goats, milk cows, pigs, and chickens in addition to cattle. The property keeps a vegetable garden and raises a good hay crop each summer. The owner is an artist and active arts
mentor for local youth and for kids from across the U.S.
The 45 minute drive from Sheridan, WY, northwest to the BAUEN GUEST RANCH, follows the east-side curve of the Big Horn Mountains as they go north. Sheridan, with a population of 17,000, is the closest town for meeting the needs of residents and visitors, fostering the solitude of country life nearby while providing a host of amenities that enrich that life style. Sheridan has been recognized many times for its positive presence in the state and nation. Its' awards include: 2006 #1 Best Western Town in America; 2008 one of 200 Top Towns for Sportsmen; 2008 one of 101 towns with Best Western Events; 2009 in top 10 of Great Cowboys Rodeo Choice; 2009 one of 25 cities and towns with Best American Values, "Uniquely American."
In summer the Sheridan area hosts 30 rodeos and many polo matches. The Wyo Theater, Wyoming's oldest vaudeville theater, is host to international folk and country musicians as well as local theater productions. Weekly farmers markets and music festivals also entertain visitors. Come winter, the mountain offers 300 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, with 50 miles of ungroomed. The small towns of Dayton and Ranchester have gas-station grocery stores and are 20 miles from the property. The area is home to many creative citizens, whose talents are represented by award winning painters, photographers, sculptors, saddle makers, leather braiders, musicians, novelists and poets. The Bauen Guest Ranch awaits your discovery!
*A 2009 County approved Conditional Use Permit provides for the 70 acres to be used as an individual family residence and/or rented for lodging as a youth or adult camp, retreat, or for reunions or conferences. The property was leased as a residential summer camp for young artists from 2000 to 2009.
