Best family location in New York City! What fun! Across from the Museum of Natural History, a block from Central Park and Diana Ross playground, 2 blocks from the Children's Museum, near Shake Shack. This property can be combined with vrbo # 284230, if you are traveling with a large group, or 2 families. That would create a duplex apartment with 3-4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, plus terrace.
This is the top floor of a 23 foot wide brownstone townhouse, in the most desirable location on the Upper West Side. 3 flights up, no elevator, this apartment is for someone who really wants to live like a New Yorker, and doesn't mind the steps. The walk is worth it! Bright and private, with large rooms filled with beautiful detail, and tastefully furnished in eclectic Manhattan taste. The townhouse is owner-occupied, although you probably won't see or hear us. However, we want to share this truly special property with guests that appreciate its uniqueness, and take care of it like their own home.
1300 square foot, floor-thru (full floor). Lots of light. Faces north and south. Large living room (22 X 20) furnished with Italian leather sofas, Murano Italian lamps, and antiques. One bedroom has a queen size bed, and the second has 2 single beds, which can be put together as a king. Sofa bed in living room. Charming old-fashioned tub with new plumbing, large bright kitchen with skylight. Original artwork.
Live in the middle of everything! Restaurants, shopping, movies, concerts, museums, antique shops (thrift shops!), Sunday morning flea market and farmer's market. Enjoy being steps away from Central Park and the Museum of Natural History, across the street from the M79 crosstown bus to the East Side, a short walk to Lincoln Center, and around the corner from everybody's favorite brunch spots: Sarabeth's, Nice/Matin, Fred's, Good Enough to Eat, and, of course, Zabar's and Zabar's Cafe. One block to the subway.
There is absolutely no smoking permitted anywhere on the property. No pets allowed.
THIS PROPERTY AND VRBO# 284230 CAN BE RENTED TOGETHER TO CREATE A 3 BEDROOM, 2 BATH DUPLEX WITH TERRACE. PLEASE EMAIL ABOUT THIS OPTION.
Come see for yourself what a joy it is to live in Manhattan!

We had no idea this location would be so convenient to everything we wanted to do, including a Mets game in Queens. We rode the subway and bus everywhere on a 1-week unlimited MTA card -- all very easy. Huge variety of restaurants (and also delis and grocery stores) within a few blocks of the apartment. This is a quiet location and the beds are comfortable so we all slept well. The kitchen is more than adequate for the way we ate, which was take out from the restaurants on the block. As other reviewers have said, there are quite a few stairs but you only have to walk up them once a day. It's not really a big deal if you take your time. The listing is accurate and so are the pictures (although the queen bed was turned 90 degrees from the orientation in the picture). The apartment was clean and everything we tried to use worked. The tub/shower arrangement is one of those retrofitted cast iron tubs with a shower curtain inside. If you are a normally able-bodied person you will have no trouble at all with this, but it's something to be aware of if you have limited mobility. On arrival we got incredibly lucky and found a parking space right in front of the apartment. I moved the car before the scheduled street cleaning on Thursday and was the only person to do so. Yep, lost the spot, no tickets were written, no street was cleaned, and I ended up in a garage for the rest of the stay. If you are driving and find a street spot I suggest you don't actually move until you are about to be ticketed. Street is free, garage is $50/day.

We rented this apartment together with the apartment on the next floor (#284230) for a family get-together in late September. We had difficulties finding one place that offered the space we required in a good location. Arranging the booking with the owner was very straightforward and they organised a crib etc. for our grandson 21 months. The space in the living area in either apartments was ample for 6 adults and 1 child and the arrangement really suited us. The apartments are one block away from Central Park, which was a real bonus with loads of convenient play parks for our grandson. We did not find the stairs a big deal and the owners were very helpful but not intrusive. We had a great holiday with easy access to NY via the subway at either 81st or 79th. Ideal!

Beautiful apartment! We (selfishly) hesitate to recommend Apt 4 so highly; we'd hate to see it booked the next time we want to visit! The owners were prompt with responding to many planning questions, their apartment is exactly as pictured in the site. The entire space is open and well-furnished, immaculate, and more than adequate for our family of five who stayed here. The linens and supplies were abundant and the kitchen perfect for cooking a birthday dinner. The maps and information about the neighborhood and NYC are current and the owner's intro covered all our questions. The carpeted stairs were no problem, we actually needed the exercise, and our ages ranged from 9 yrs to 76 yrs! We drove into the city and were able to park free in the neighborhood - on the street - and either walk or take the bus or subway to various destinations. We tossed a football and jogged in Central Park, we walked in Riverside Park, we brought food in from Zabar's and Fairway and Trader Joe's. Subway and bus connections are within two blocks. There's every service, every kind of food, every shop within walking distance in this charming, safe neighborhood. It's only minutes to the theater district via subway and a good walk to Lincoln Center. There are great museums a block away. The Upper West Side has it all, and this lovely brownstone is the perfect place for a family gathering in NYC.

We rented both this apartment and the apartment below it for one week in June 2011. We were a family group meeting in New York from Canada and California. If you want to feel like a real New Yorker, visiting local restaurants, deli's, strolling through Central Park and just taking in the wonderful Upper West Side vibe, this is the place for you. The owners are on site and were very helpful and yet were not at all intrusive. This was the trip of a lifetime for us, Manhattan never disappoints and this property makes you feel like you've had a taste of being a real New Yorker, if even just for a little while. We would highly recommend.

We stayed here for a week in September, a family of four with two children aged 10 and 8. We were pleasantly surprised at the amount of space. There was a lovely large living/dining space and both bedrooms were a good size. The kitchen was a galley kitchen, but it had everything we needed for cooking pasta meals. The building was a classic NY brownstone and we were on the top floor so lots of stairs, which didn't bother us, but don't stay here if you don't like stairs! The apartment is a block away from the Museum of Natural History and Central Park, and has several supermarkets within easy walking distance, as you would expect in NY. There are two subway lines close by so it is pretty easy to get around. The owners had a great list of recommended restaurants, but our kids aren't very adventurous eaters, so we stuck with Shake Shack, a burger place just around the corner.

Four members of my family (including 2 teenagers - one of whom was studying for exams) stayed at this very clean apartment for 3 weeks in April. The apartment was spacious with a large living/dining room and a very big bedroom (with 2 single beds) - separated by the walk through galley kitchen - which worked out perfectly for our student who could close the door and block out noise from the living room. The kitchen was good with a large fridge, microwave and full stove. A few more pots and a sharp knife would've been useful but we managed in any case. The washer /dryer very useful; the bathroom was serviceable with adequate storage (hot water takes a while to come through but is worth the wait) and there were lots of clean white fluffy towels. The other 'main' bedroom is small, but perfectly adequate, with bedside tables and a closet. The larger bedroom has two windows which look out onto back yards and other buildings and provides good light. All beds were very comfortable. The owner was helpful and responsive and provided a good list of information about the local area. There was wi-fi which worked most of the time. There are 2 main subway routes close by and buses crosstown and downtown. Being near Central Park was fabulous and there are many great bars, restaurants and shops around. Good supermarkets like Fairway and Zabars within walking distance. We didn't mind the steps (my daughter counted 58 inside the building plus there are probably another 10 on the stoop) as it kept us fit, but this could be difficult for some people. The apartment has good light throughout although the window panes, as you can see in the photos, are leadlight with opaque panes so you cannot view outside without opening the windows, and this was slightly disconcerting when it was cold. However not enough to stop me from staying there again! I have no hesitation in recommending this apartment.
