Gaylord cottage description
Our family cottage is a single level ranch style layout with (4) bedrooms (three with queen beds and the forth has two twins, a double and a bunk bed; this 'bunk room' is great for kids). Four couches offer extra sleeping space in the living room and porch if needed. Two full baths (both with showers). The large living room has a cathedral ceiling and knotty pine walls, very popular and still plentiful in northern Michigan. A large stone fireplace (gas). A 42” plasma TV with cable is in the living room, and each bedroom has a smaller TV. Wireless high speed internet service is furnished. The dining room table seats eight easily with extra tables in the living room and the glassed-in porch. A modern well equipped kitchen (spices included) helps make meals and entertaining a breeze. Laundry room offers a washer and dryer on site. Outside towards the lake you will find a relaxing 3 person swing, a 25' x 25' brick paved patio area, two BBQ grills, picnic table, portable fire pit and comfortable wrought-iron patio furniture, including 10 chairs and two additional round tables. An American flag flying high overlooks an awesome beach and swimming area. The beach is furnished with additional chairs for sunning. The sandy, rock-free swim area tapers gently from shore to the deeper water. Our private dock runs full length from the patio, across the sand, to the lake, with 80' extending out on the water. Room for docking a boat (up to ~24') or other water toys. This side of the lake usually receives a breeze, so few bugs are ever present. The wind coming through the trees can truly be glorious, and the sunsets are often breathtaking, just like in the movies!

Looking to spend some time ‘up north’
Per our guest's email 6/3/13: Thanks Richard. We had an awesome time and the cottage was perfect for the kids and grandkids. They even braved the lake. We had plenty of room and the bunk room was perfect for the young ones. The cottage was very well equipped and everything else was so close being in Gaylord. I really hope we can do it again. Thanks for sharing your cottage and providing us a wonderful stay. Owner's reply: Hope the kids liked the beach and the lake as much as I did ... we put the docks in about 4 hours prior to your arrival! Come visit again!

Great cabin in a great location
Great cabin in a great location
We rented this cabin for a family snowmobile trip and were very happy we did. The cabin has charm, history and everything you need, plus the location is great. This isn't a cabin that was purchased to be a business investment, but a family cabin with a long history. Working with the owners was a pleasure a d we would definitely recommend it to others.

Owner response: Chris, Thanks for the positive review! Snow has been pretty good in the Gaylord area this season. We've been sledding twice since Christmas up to Indian River and over to East Jordan/Charlevoix. Gaylord still is the best hub for trails for me. Of course the cottage on the lake and next to the trails may bias our family a bit! Think snow for 3-4 more weeks! Maybe some skiing this weekend! Glad you enjoyed! Richard

We went north to see the fall colors and get away from it all. The cottage was very nice and the beach was awesome. We were close to anything we needed yet far enough away from town to be relaxing. We are hoping to return next year. Maybe when it's still warm enough to enjoy the water.

Owner response: Kathie, We are glad the local colors cooperated around Gaylord this year! They were actually some of the best ever. The summer calendar is already 2/3 full for 2013, so please have a look in May and June! Thanks for your kind comments! Richard, Owner

We found this cottage to be one of the best equipped we have ever stayed at. Everything was as advertised. The owners have been terrific to deal with. We love the setting and the many amenities the area offers. The beach is incredible. The golfing in the area is second to none. There are a number of very good restaurants in the area. We had the occasion to meet one of the neighbours, Tom, who was very personable and helpful. We have visited this area before on a number of occasions and felt, unanimously, that a return trip to this cottage next year is a must!

Owner response: George, Thanks for the kind comments! Sister Nancy and I share many memories of the Family Cottage, due in no small part to the great beach and lakefront, and many family events and gatherings. Glad your Thunder Bay friends enjoyed, and hope you return again soon, either summer or winter! Richard, Owner
I've read the other reviews and, Yes, the "cottage" has everything to guarantee a good vacation. The listing description is full and accurate, the owners are terrific to deal with and my grandchildren go right to Nancy's cookies - delicious! Our main attraction is the lake. Our days are mainly spent outside: from our first coffee in the morning, sitting outside at the table watching the lake come awake, to the waterskiing, tubing, kayaking, swimming and fishing throughout the day and evening. We always watch the beautiful sunsets and then enjoy a bonfire. Each day is a treasure.

Owner response: Margaret, We are equally proud of the lakefront and sandy beach and swim area! Grew up there in the summers, with hot dogs on the grill for lunch and often perch dinners at night! Glad to know the adults are having fun, too with the watersports! Thanks for your kind comments, and perhaps think of us for a Fall trip, too! Richard and Nancy, Owners
Hands down the best beach waterfront house the family has ever stayed at! I did more swimming in those five days than I have in 10 years! Perfect for kids and the whole family. House was exceedingly equipped with supplies, clean and comfortable. The back bedrooms did get unpleasantly warm when it came time to go to sleep but we were grateful that the house had many fans for our use. I was very sad to leave but thankful that we were able to experience such beautiful surroundings! Thanks to both Richard and Nancy for their hospitality!

Owner response: Dena, Thanks for the kind words for our cottage. Very glad to hear that your party of 12 adults + kids enjoyed the beach and the water. On the very warm nights, we put fans in the "bunk room", one pulling night air in, and across the room, another fan pushing air out. This circulation really helps. Of course, two of the other bedrooms have A/C in their windows. Amazing how popular they are on the hottest nights! Pleased that your gang had a good time! We're open in the winter, too for skiing and snowmobiling! Richard
A perfect Home Away!
A perfect Home Away!
A wonderful Home Away! We would like to say how lovely our visit to Gaylord, Michigan was. The house was beautiful, a dream holiday and cottage, well equipped with everything we needed. Nancy was so friendly, welcoming and helpful. We would most definitely visit again! We have to say that this home is an excellent property! This home has a friendly, warm and cosy feel to it and it offers a perfect family home base away, while exploring the surrounding areas. The North woods decor with Gas fired, Field Stone Fireplace, in the main living room; makes for easy relaxing evenings for several people comfortably. The Conservatory provides an ideal reading room. The home offers plenty of sleeping berths for 11 persons, plus, over 4 large bedrooms! TV/DVD/VCR in main living room and in each of the bedrooms, adds enough entertainment variety, for the entire family. The High speed WIFI, is also a very big plus for anyone requiring Internet connectivity while travelling. The lake front is wonderful and has a lovely sandy beach and dock just a few feet from the patio and rear home entry. Makes for a nice swim and has fairly shallow waters with a long gradual deepening. West, South West, the views and sunsets are beautiful and during the autumn colours, we can only imagine these at present, but will definitely be back to see them in the not to distant future. Great local amenities as well, with a very short walk to the local convenience store and only about a 3 mile drive, to Glens Market or the Wal-Mart super store! Our Host and Hostess, Richard and Nancy, were outstanding in every way! Over all we had such a wonderful, relaxed and enjoyed family visit to the North Michigan woods and their excellent hospitality made this vacation complete. Again, thank you, Jacinta & Terry Cooper London, England

Owner response: Terry and Jacinta, We were honored to have international guests at our cottage ... England was certainly well represented in Northern Michigan last month! Translating on behalf of "some" of us Americans, the Conservatory is the British version of a sun porch, with a more elegant moniker! We hope to open our doors to you and your friends again for a Fall visit, And again thank you for the complete and courteous communication end to end, both email and telecom. A true pleasure to interact. Richard Peters & Nancy Stecker, Owners Gaylord, Michigan

The cabin was great. It was so nice being near Treetops and Gaylord for shopping. Everything went smoothly and everyone had a great time. The lake was beautiful I hope to be back in the summer.

Owner response: Joe, Glad to hear your family enjoyed your winter break in the Gaylord area! We appreciated your solid communication to cover all the details prior to your visit. Summer bookings are already more than 2/3 full, so please don't wait too long for choosing a summer get away. We brag about perhaps the best beach conditions on Otsego Lake! Sincerely, Richard Owner
Our stay in a winter wonderland
Our stay in a winter wonderland
My wife & I and 3 other adult couples occupied this cabin for a weekend of snowmobiling. Absolutely no disappointments! All the amenities coupled with the rustic charm of this house made for a very comfortable stay - far outweighing hotel rooms. There is more than enough room for the 8 of us to put our things (lots of gear included) & enjoy a relaxing weekend with each other. Right on the lake & just off a groomed snowmobile trail made it an ideal location. Dealing with the owners was very easy and they were most accomodating. Before we left our wives were looking to book a summer weekend here. To our dismay, they found it was already reserved for nearly the entire season. Easy for us to see why and we all agreed this is where we'll stay next year - can't wait! Thank You Richard, your family has quite a gem and we are very happy to have found you! See ya next winter.

Owner response: Thanks, Jack to you and your entire party for the kind remarks! We were pleased to share our cottage to those helping others (Pink Ribbon snowmobile fund raisers) and to just kick back and enjoy northern Michigan in the winter. Our winter time use is typically a combo of skiing and sledding, and if it's an extended stay, shopping in Petosky or Harbor Springs. Think snow!

Year Purchased: 1980
About the owner: Our grandparents built the original cottage on Otsego Lake in 1940. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming and picking blueberries, and introduced vacation lakefront living to our parents and our family as the generations passed. The cottage expanded, adding beds and creature comforts. We retained the great old stone fireplace (now gas) and knotty pine beams throughout the main living areas. My family now enjoys terrific boating, excellent snowmobiling, great golf and awesome skiing whenever we visit. Gaylord grew up too, and now offers all types of restaurants, shopping, kid’s attractions and a new movie theater, all five miles away or less. Our cottage is in the middle of Gaylord's 'Golf Mecca' for summmer fans of the game, and for the winter enthusiasts, we typically receive over 180 inches of snow annually due to our location in the Gaylord 'Snow Belt'.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
We consider Otsego Lake as a very friendly FAMILY oriented lake. It’s nearly six miles long with great fishing, sailing, swimming, skiing, boating and relaxing. It has a nearby state park and boat launch, and a marina for boat gas and repairs. Live bait is available nearby. A terrific sandy beach and dock are at your disposal. The swimming area is rock-free, and tapers gradually from shallow to deep for kids and grownups alike. We have an outdoor swing, plenty of patio furniture, a large stone charcoal BBQ (and also a new gas grill) to make the lakefront vista even more enjoyable. Our vacation cottage is within a block of a little convenience store (Al's Market) and our family would often take a walk for candy or ice cream (adult beverages and pizza also available). Snowmobile rentals and dealerships with all four major brands are close by. The groomed state snowmobile trail system runs right along the east side of the lake, connecting you to statewide system, just 60 seconds from our cottage. Trips to Grayling, Lewiston, Indian River, East Jordan and beyond are common from our cottage, with gas stations only a few minutes away. Winter draws many onto Otsego Lake itself for ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. There is even a serious snow sledding hill a few miles away used by kids and adult thrill-seekers! The Gaylord area is known as the 'Golf Mecca'. Nearly 30 golf courses, some with legendary architects, are within 5 to 30 minutes of our cottage. Only five minutes to Marsh Ridge, The Loon, Michaywe for golf, and within ten minutes to Treetops and Otsego Club resorts, for both golf and skiing. And as little as 30 minutes to Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, Nubs Nob and many other resorts. Less than an hour to Petosky, Harbor Springs and Mackinaw Island ferry. Other terrific lakes, including Charlevoix, Burt, Mullet, Torch and Walloon are within an hour drive for a day trip. All without the constraints of a motel, and with all the comforts of home!
