Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2008
I am a museum curator, and formerly worked with McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina. This work informed me about the folk life and history of North and South Carolina. I enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities, as well as attending concerts, such as those featured at the Brevard Music Festival.
Why the Owner Chose Brevard
Our cabin, named Mountain Song, sits atop a sunny South-facing ridge surrounded by high peaks. Located in the Round Mountain area of Transylvania County, North Carolina, it commands a view of the peaks of North Carolina's Gorges State Park and South Carolina's Jocassee Gorges wilderness preserve. It is within easy driving distance of Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The area offers some of the best hiking in the eastern United States, and also access to other outdoor activities such as visiting waterfalls and river rafting. The area is also a major center for pottery and other crafts. The Brevard Music Festival, about a half hour's drive away, offers world-class musical events all summer.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
Mountain Song cabin is located in a part of Transylvania County that is relatively undiscovered, very close to the eastern entrance to Gorges State Park. We have easy access to Pisgah National Forest and all its trails, too. Transylvania County is known for its waterfalls, which number in the hundreds. Several of them, especially those in Dupont State Forest--also a short drive away - were used as locations for famous movies. When we aren't hiking, we often go into downtown Brevard, which has wonderful shops and restaurants. The cabin is only about an hour's drive down US Highway 178 to one of the few working grist mills in upstate South Carolina - Hagood Mill. At this historic site there are regular shows of authentic mountain crafts, performances of folk and bluegrass music and you can see grits and corn meal being ground in the old fashioned way. Even if you don't set foot off the property, just being at the cabin is so relaxing. The view from the deck is superb, and when we are not hiking or taking part is one of the activities in the Brevard area, such as the Brevard Music Festival concerts, we enjoy simply sitting on the deck with a good book and a glass of wine. We also enjoy collecting handmade pottery, which can be found at several studios and galleries in the Brevard area.

My husband, son and I had a wonderful Christmas at the cabin. The house was extremely clean and comfortable for us. We have never spent Christmas in the mountains in a rental cabin, but will certainly do it again. It was exactly as depicted in the advertisement and the owners provided helpful sightseeing and restaurant information ahead of our arrival. I strongly recommend this cabin to others looking for a getaway from everyday life.

Mountian Song is everything the description says and alot more. The place was spotless when we arrived and immediately felt very homey. The kitchen was very tidy and well-quipped with everything we needed. The bedrooms and baths were also well-stocked with fresh, clean linens and towels. The bedrooms and sitting areas were all very comfortable. There's plenty of glass in the right places that makes the interior warm and sunny and provides magnificent views of the mountains, and valleys both nearby and distant. The deck gives you an even better view of the panorama and makes a great place to enjoy meals, read, and catnap. There's a million places to hike close by in Gorges State Park, Pisgah National Forest, and Dupont State Forest and Headwaters Outfitters, about 20 minutes away, offers kayak, canoe, and tube trips on the French Broad River and guided trout fishing trips to some great trout fishing spots. Brevard is close by and offers a lot of great restraurants, art and antique shops, regional speciality shops, and major grocery stores. In a nutshell, a great find, we're already planning a return visit this spring.
Owner response:It is a joy to share our mountain home with people who also love the mountains. We wanted to create a comfortable space where we and our guests could relax, read or rest after a day of hiking, fishing, water sports, gallery-walking or other activity, and watch the sun rise or set and the stars appear over the mountains.

The description and photos of the cabin are totally accurate, except that no photos can do justice to the awesome views you'll have from the decks. The owner was extremely responsive and helpful via e-mail - I felt that she genuinely wanted us to have a good trip. The location is ideal if you are interested in exploring the area's many waterfalls. The gravel roads in the area are well-maintained. The bed was very comfortable after long days of hiking, and the kitchen was especially well-stocked. We felt at home here, and I would recommend this place to anyone. I'm sure this will be the first of many visits for us.

We spent a long weekend in at Mountain Song and I know exactly why it is named Mountain Song. While swinging out on the covered porch or relaxing in the Adirondack chairs the open deck, either early in the morning or watching the sun set in the evening, you will hear the song of the mountains. The sliding glass door in the master bedroom has a screen and it, which allowed it to be wonderful to sleep with the sliding glass door open and and feel the cool night air all night long. The cabin has plenty of room for four people, but there were only two of us. As you can see in the “description” it is fully equipped and immaculately clean. I thoroughly enjoyed waking up first, going out on the deck with my coffee and watching the sunrise. Take some binoculars. The view is spectacular. The cabin is centrally located and only minutes away to the surrounding area activities. We took in hiking the trails of Pisgah and Dupont. We kayaked on the Davidson and experienced whitewater rafting on the French Broad, visited several breathtaking waterfalls in the Pisgah and Dupont. The little town of Brevard is charming with all the little shops and quaint restaurants you would expect plus a few little surprises. If it is peace and quite of the mountains, along with an adventure or two, then you will enjoy Mountain Song. However, find out if the grill is working, if it is grilled steaks you want for supper! The cabin owners are very sweet, helpful and informative of the area. Every person we encountered on the vacation was so helpful and made the trip absolutely fantastic. It was very hard to leave. I will be back next year for sure.

This cottage is situated to give the most exposure to the mountains and the fall colors, that were breath taking. The decking surrounds one-half of the house which afforded a scenic view in nearly every direction. The approach to the property is a one lane road that makes you feel that you are really getting away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a rare opportunity to commune with nature. .

We just got back from a great stay at the Mountain Song. The cabin was extremely nice and well kept - absolutley spotless clean. The bedrooms are large and there are two nice bathrooms. The outside deck is more than you could ever hopeful. There was lots of room for dining, playing cards or just gazing at the view. The cabin was so well furnished and supplied. We were amazed at how complete this cabin was equipped. You have everything you could possibly need. The kitchen was stocked with everything I would have at home. There is a big selection of movies, books and local hiking guides. We loved the quiet of the location and the feeling that you had the area all to yourself. The cabin was in a good location for doing the local waterfall hikes. The only thing to note is that this cabin is about 30 minutes southwest of Brevard. The last 1.1 miles is on a narrow gravel road with a lot of turns. I would recommend an SUV in bad weather. Otherwise my Honda Accord made the trip with ease. Make sure you understand the directions and I would recommend getting there in the day time. It could be very confusing at night.

Our mountain vacation was fabulous. The view was beautiful and the house was perfect for us. The location was difficult for us, juggling nap schedules for two young kidddos; it was a 45 min. drive from Pisgah...but once we got there, we loved it!
