The Sugarhouse at Sheady Acres

Sheady Acres is a 25 acre slice of heaven halfway between Jay Peak and Montgomery Center. Our hilltop Southern exposure gives us one of the best sunsets in town, as well as maximum light for one of the many activities we offer. There is an eighteen-hole disc golf course on property. Cross-country skiing, hiking, swimming and world-class mountain and road biking are right outside your door. Jay Peak offers a championship eighteen-hole golf course, and the deepest powder skiing on the east coast. Jay Peak has also just the largest indoor water park in the norhteast and a full size hockey-skating rink. Ask us about discounted ski passes. The Vast Trail has an access in town, 3 miles away, and 2 miles further down the road is another access with parking. You will not run out of things to do, no matter the duration of your stay.
The Sugarhouse at Sheady Acres: Sheady Acres is at the gateway to one of the most unspoiled areas in the country, The Northeast Kingdom. Although there are many activities in the area, the main attraction continues to be the great expanses of natural habitat that exist in the region. Jay Peak Ski Area is five miles up the road and Stowe, Burlington and Montreal are all under one and a half hours away. Our Cottages were designed with the savvy traveler in mind. They are outfitted with a fridge/freezer, convection oven, microwave and full compliment of dishware and kitchen amenities. All Cottages have natural Queen size New Englander pillow top mattresses, flat screen satellite television, and wireless internet. On demand hot water, and adjustable propane heat will keep you warm on those cold north country nights. Locally owned and operated, your hosts are knowledgeable about all things Vermont. These cottages have been a labor of love, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we have.
“The Sugarhouse” is our ode to Vermont, complete with a beautiful claw foot bathtub (with shower) and vaulted ceiling, designed from a traditional Vermont sugarhouse. The smell of the local white cedar interior is as sweet as any grade of syrup. The Sugarhouse is also the “greenest” of our cottages, utilizing almost all local and recycled materials. A pine plank breakfast nook, spalted maple trim, and marble corner sink to name a few. This versatile cottage will accomodate everyone from honeymooners to lovers of white powder days.
What to bring: Think motel without the shared wall space. We provide bedding, towels, etc. Don’t forget your camera and recreational toys.
How to get here: We are located on VT Route 242 exactly three miles from Montgomery Center. After you pass the Belfry Restaurant (if it is possible), we are 0.7 miles on the right. Coming from Jay Peak we are about five miles on your left.
Please contact us for information on our other properties, our 'pet friendly' Carribean Cottage, Irish Farm House and Adobe cottages and the Teahouse Pagoda (not pet friendly). Thank You!

We stumbled upon this hidden gem when looking up places to stay near Jay Peak and were so happy we did! We stayed in the "Irish Farmhouse" which was a super comfortable, fully equipped, 2 story cottage that could house a small family. It was definitely more then enough space for 2! It was extremely clean and quiet, plus private and the surrounding land was beautiful! Oh, and very affordable! When we weren't snowboarding or sightseeing (Jay Peak is a straight shoot 5 minutes up the road) we truly enjoyed the hot tub, long walks through the vast woods behind the cottages and chatting it up with both the owners, Shawna and Eamon. They were incredible hosts who made us feel right at home and were a wealth of knowledge as far as what to do nearby along with outside of the Jay area. We can't wait to come back during the winter to enjoy Jay's infamous powder days and will recommend Sheady Acres to anyone heading to northern VT! This beats a condo or hotel ANYDAY!!! Thanks again, A++Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

OK...I know this is a huge ski area, being right down the road from Jay Peak. However, my Tuesday had me leaving a meeting in St. Albans at 5pm with a morning meeting in Derby at 8. I'm very glad to have found this place - beautifully built cottages (I stayed in the Tea House), right down the road from a nice restaurant and a few miles from the town proper. The place has it all! Wifi worked well, too, as I had a few things to get done when I got there. I am certainly stopping in next time I'm in the area....you should, too!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, pet owners, families with young children.

We spent a lovely week with our dogs at the Adobe cottage. The place is perfect home-base for Jay Peak ski area just a few miles up the road. The interior is beautifully designed and crafted, and has a warm and cosy feel to it. The hosts, Shawna and Eamon, were very helpful and friendly, our car got stuck in a snow bank on the night of arrival, it was them who tow us back on the road!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, pet owners.

I stayed with my family and pets at the Irish Farmhouse for two nights. Every house on the grounds was really unique and creative to its own theme (all of the homes have a really neat theme they follow.) The beautiful stained glass dragon knotwork in the farmhouse really stands out as the coolest part of that particular house for me. The owners were extremely pleasant, friendly and honestly the most gracious and helpful hosts I have ever encountered. My family has officially decided that this is where we will vacation annually from now on. If you have pets this is really the best place to stay in the area hands down. The price is extremely reasonable and the house was exceptionally clean and the grounds were beautiful with incredible views of the night sky and the surrounding mountains. We spent most of our time exploring the woods, sledding, playing in the snow, and snowshoeing. The home was impressively creative and carefully crafted with great attention to detail and the amenities made everything perfect for our stay. There are tons of awesome family activities in the area (at Jay Peak) and even on the grounds alone. We ate at the Belfry which is right down the road (I highly recommend their wings, delicious!) We will definitely be back soon!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We stayed in the Caribe cottage and it was absolutely perfect. After glancing at the other cottages I have no doubt they all are equally as nice. They are all very well built and very classy. Upon arrival we sat on the rocking chairs out on our little deck and enjoyed a glass of wine and the quite of the evening. In the morning we turned on the heater to take off the chill and the place warmed up quickly. We felt like we were home, the bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked. We were in the area for a wedding so we didn't have time to enjoy the hot tub or the camp fire but we did take a quick walk on some of the trails and it was absolutely beautiful. Our dog also enjoyed the place. Do yourself a favor and book a stay at any of these cottages.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

My husband and I spent a weekend in the Sugar House and enjoyed every minute. It's a beautifully designed, well furnished and spotlessly clean cabin, and surrounded by lovely gardens. The woodwork is breathtaking and the paintings and pictures by local artists are delightful and in keeping with the rest of the decor. The website did not do it justice; you have to stay there to feel the warmth of the beautiful wood and the entire cabin. The bed was wonderful and the galley kitchen had everything we needed. The owners were friendly and helpful, but gave us the privacy that helped us feel we were in our own little world. A wonderful place to celebrate a wedding, anniversary, reunion, birthday, ski vacation.....Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We have been lucky enough to stay at the Sheady Acres a couple of times now. Both times in the Tea House. Upon entering the property you are instantly assured of it's quality and attention to detail. All of the cabins are very inviting. From your front porch you are able to see and appreciate the craftsmanship of all of the unique cabins, however they still maintain their privacy. Inside, the bed and linens are of excellent quality and very hard to get out of in the morning! The attention to detail by the builders (the home-owner and other local carpenters!), is hard to miss. Unique salvaged and re-claimed materials give depth and warmth to the place, with a mix of modern and theme specific art that melds together wonderfully. We have seen the inside of all of the units, and are very much inspired by the spaces. Very well equipped, and most importantly...VERY CLEAN! A wonderful location with many local attractions, however...you may never want to leave Sheady Acres! Thank you Eamon and Shawna! Excellent hosts!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

The stay was wonderful the owners were very helpful and very laid back. The Sugar House was beautiful and was the perfect size for my boyfriend and I. It was really close to Jay Peak and we went snow boarding two days. There is a out door hot that we utilized both nights. It was peaceful and a great end to a long day of snowboarding. I would recommend this to anyone looking to head up to Jay Peak.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: Sheady Acres started over 15 years ago when I purchased 25 acres of prime meadow and woodlands on Rte 242 in Montgomery Center, Vermont. A treehouse was my first endeavor where I lived for a few years with my dog. The West was calling my name, however, so I spent a few winters in Winter Park, Co and Jackson Hole, WY always returning in the spring to my first love, Vermont. My wife and I met in Winter Park, and we’ve been married for over 6 years. We have a home that I built on Sheady Acres that we share with our daughter and our playful companions Daisy and Kitty. I’ve been in the carpentry/construction business for over 15 years. I dabble with pencil drawings and started focusing on cottages that I could design and build myself and rent to visitors who come to the Jay Peak Area. Having traveled to different parts of the world, I was inspired to create The Sugar House which is pure Vermont, the Caribbe which is my interpretation of the Caribbean cottage and the Tea House which is my take on the Japanese Pagoda. The Farmhouse will be number four and the Irish cottages I saw in County Cork certainly influenced its design. My wife decorated the interiors to enhance the individual flavors of each cottage so your experience will continue as you open the door and head inside. Sheady Acres Cottages have been a labor of love and an expression of creativity that we sincerely hope will be shared by those who come and visit us. Give us a try. We look forward to hearing from you.
Why the Owner Chose Montgomery Center:
I chose to build a vacation rental in Montgomery Center, Vt because I grew up in this area and love Vermont. Watching the bikers soar down the hill from Jay Peak and the skiers go by on those powder days, I got the feeling that there are many people who would love an alternative type of property to rent while on vacation; a place with its own character and uniqueness, a place different from any other they've ever stayed at. Nearby are mountain bike trails, a golf course, the Long Trail (hiking), incredible sunsets, a ski area and a disc golf couse on site. It's the perfect place to have a vacation! We donate a percentage of our profits to the local animal shelter.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
There is a very popular restaurant and bar within walking distance of our property, about 1/2 mile downhill. Jay Brook is a small hike behind the cottage where one can go on a hot day to cool off. Check out our Pet Friendly cottages the Caribbean, Adobe and Irish Farm House . We guarantee your dog will love this place as much as you will. In the winter you will have access to acres of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
We have added a beautiful gazebo that one finds by following a stone path into the woods. A hot tub awaits the tired skiers, bikers, riders, hikers and those who just want to sit back and gaze at the stars.
