Sheady Acres is a 25 acre slice of heaven halfway between Jay Peak and Montgomery Center. Our hilltop Southern exposure gives us one of the best sunsets in town, as well as maximum light for one of the many activities we offer. There is an eighteen-hole disc golf course on property. Cross-country skiing, hiking, swimming and world-class mountain and road biking are right outside your door. Jay Peak offers a championship eighteen-hole golf course, and the deepest powder skiing on the east coast. Jay Peak has also just the largest indoor water park in the norhteast and a full size hockey-skating rink. Ask us about discounted ski passes. The Vast Trail has an access in town, 3 miles away, and 2 miles further down the road is another access with parking. You will not run out of things to do, no matter the duration of your stay.

The Sugarhouse at Sheady Acres: Sheady Acres is at the gateway to one of the most unspoiled areas in the country, The Northeast Kingdom. Although there are many activities in the area, the main attraction continues to be the great expanses of natural habitat that exist in the region. Jay Peak Ski Area is five miles up the road and Stowe, Burlington and Montreal are all under one and a half hours away. Our Cottages were designed with the savvy traveler in mind. They are outfitted with a fridge/freezer, convection oven, microwave and full compliment of dishware and kitchen amenities. All Cottages have natural Queen size New Englander pillow top mattresses, flat screen satellite television, and wireless internet. On demand hot water, and adjustable propane heat will keep you warm on those cold north country nights. Locally owned and operated, your hosts are knowledgeable about all things Vermont. These cottages have been a labor of love, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we have.

“The Sugarhouse” is our ode to Vermont, complete with a beautiful claw foot bathtub (with shower) and vaulted ceiling, designed from a traditional Vermont sugarhouse. The smell of the local white cedar interior is as sweet as any grade of syrup. The Sugarhouse is also the “greenest” of our cottages, utilizing almost all local and recycled materials. A pine plank breakfast nook, spalted maple trim, and marble corner sink to name a few. This versatile cottage will accomodate everyone from honeymooners to lovers of white powder days.

What to bring: Think motel without the shared wall space. We provide bedding, towels, etc. Don’t forget your camera and recreational toys.

How to get here: We are located on VT Route 242 exactly three miles from Montgomery Center. After you pass the Belfry Restaurant (if it is possible), we are 0.7 miles on the right. Coming from Jay Peak we are about five miles on your left.

Please contact us for information on our other properties, our 'pet friendly' Carribean Cottage and the Teahouse Pagoda. Thank You!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2009

Sheady Acres started over 10 years ago when I purchased 25 acres of prime meadow and woodlands on Rte 242 in Montgomery Center, Vermont. A treehouse was my first endeavor where I lived for a few years with my dog, Huck. The West was calling my name, however, so I spent a few winters in Winter Park, Co and Jackson Hole, WY always returning in the spring to my first love, Vermont.
My wife and I met in Winter Park, and we’ve been married for over 3 years. We have a home that I built on Sheady Acres that we share with our baby daughter and our now 11 year old, faithful companion, Huck.
I’ve been in the carpentry/construction business for over 10 years. I dabble with pencil drawings and started focusing on cottages that I could design and build myself and rent to visitors who come to the Jay Peak Area. Having traveled to different parts of the world, I was inspired to create The Sugar House which is pure Vermont, the Caribbe which is my interpretation of the Caribbean cottage and the Tea House which is my take on the Japanese Pagoda. The Farmhouse will be number four and the Irish cottages I saw in County Cork certainly influenced its design. My wife decorated the interiors to enhance the individual flavors of each cottage so your experience will continue as you open the door and head inside.
Sheady Acres Cottages have been a labor of love and an expression of creativity that we sincerely hope will be shared by those who come and visit us. Give us a try. We look forward to hearing from you.

Why the Owner Chose Montgomery Center

I chose to build a vacation rental in Montgomery Center, Vt because I grew up in this area and love Vermont. Watching the bikers soar down the hill from Jay Peak and the skiers go by on those powder days, I got the feeling that there are many people who would love an alternative type of property to rent while on vacation; a place with its own character and uniqueness, a place different from any other they've ever stayed at. Nearby are mountain bike trails, a golf course, the Long Trail (hiking), incredible sunsets, a ski area and a disc golf couse on site. It's the perfect place to have a vacation!

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

There is a very popular restaurant and bar within walking distance of our property, about 1/2 mile downhill. Jay Brook is a small hike behind the cottage where one can go on a hot day to cool off. Check out our Pet Friendly cottage the Caribbean. We guarantee your dog will love this place as much as you will. In the winter you will have access to acres of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
We have added a beautiful gazebo that one finds by following a stone path into the woods. A hot tub awaits the tired skiers, bikers, riders, hikers and those who just want to sit back and gaze at the stars.

Incredibly Peacefully

We decided on a short trip based on rave reviews a co-worker had after a visit. The stay lived up to every great thing I had heard and more. Cottage was incredibly clean, had all the amenities needed for a country get away. While there was a nice flat screen TV, we never turned it on. Instead we read, took long walks on the property and played frisbee in the large open field. It was a the first time we traveled with our dog and I was nervious it might limit what we could do. He hiked all trails with us and went to the local waterholes. He slept like a rock each night and so did we!

I just finished a stay of two weeks and the term" home away from home" could'nt fit any better. I happened to be working in the area during an unusual Vermont hot spell. It was a welcome sight to pull into the drive way at the end of each day and see my cottage. Relaxing outside in the shade a few minutes later made it very easy to forget about the days work. I look forward to my next stay.

Pet-friendly and Purrfect!

We have a beloved but aging cat that needs medication twice per day, so we cannot travel without her, but after a year we were really desperate for a vacation. We love snowboarding, always wanted to go to Jay Peak, and were thrilled to find that Sheady Acres would let us bring our cat. We arrived at night when Shawna and Eamon were already asleep but our cottage was ready and waiting for us. It was small but cozy and perfect for us. Other things of note: * Since our cat was alone all day while we were skiing, we cooked dinner in the room. The kitchenette was tiny, and only had a hot-plate, but was stocked with dishes, pots, a fridge for our groceries, etc. and worked fine. We've stayed at other places with "stocked kitchens" where we had to go out and buy something, but not here. They put a lot of thought into what people use when cooking so that everything we needed was available. * The first morning we found that the shower drain did not work. We told them about it and they explained that the pipes were probably freezing because the electric heater circuit under the cabin had failed. Even though Eamon had recently broken his collar-bone and was in a sling, he came out to the cabin and, with our help, fixed it. When we returned from skiing that night, the drain worked. * Officially because we helped Eamon fix the pipe heater, but really we think just because they are so awesome, when we got back that first night, Shawna had left a small Christmas stocking (we were there the week ending 12/25) with a bag of treats for our cat in it! Besides being incredibly thoughtful, this turned out to be a life-saver. Our cat was getting tired off the Pill Pockets we used to give her some of her meds, but she absolutely LOVED the treats Shawna gave us. Even now, six months later, we still use that brand of treats and our cat still totally loves them. * It snowed most of the time we were there, but the Sheady Acres road and our cottage's little driveway were always plowed when we got back from skiing. Overall, we loved it, and definitely plan to go back. We give it two thumbs and two paws up!

Saved The Day!

We were touring northern VT by bicycle when, after a 50+ mile day with lots of climbing, we found that many accommodations in the Montgomery area were closed due to "the off season". You can only imagine what that did to our moral. Sheady Acres saved the day! Not only were they open, they were welcoming and the cabins were perfect. I can not say enough about this lovely young couple and their clean, well appointed cabins on the mountain. Stay there. You won't be sorry.

Great place to stay!

We highly recommend staying at Sheady Acres Cottages if you are planning a visit to the Jay Peak area. The accommodations were simple yet creative, clean, quiet and comfortable. There is a great restaurant, The Belfry, just a minute down the road. The hosts are very friendly, helpful, and knowledgable about the area. We did a backcountry ski tour on the Catamount Trail during our visit and they even helped us with our car drop. You'll love it!

delightful stay

Guest: cjm (Marshfield, VT)
Date of Stay: 02/17/11 Review Submitted: 02/18/11

Our recent stay at the Shéady Acres was simply delightful. The Sugar House cottage was comfy and cozy with every amenity provided including a well-equipped kitchenette. Owner Eamon was friendly and offered suggestions for places to dine in the immediate area as well as just over the border in Canada. We loved the sound of the rain on the metal roof. Yes, the overnight rain changed the ski conditions and our plans to ski at the nearby Hazen’s Notch Cross Country area. Fortunately we had our snowshoes along for an outing on the Long Trail only a few miles up the road before heading back home. If you want an experience that’s different from hotels and motels and if you want an experience that gives you a taste of Vermont, we highly recommend Shéady Acres.

These cottages are realy nice. Stayed in the "Farm House". There was plenty of room for me, my wife and two teengers. It's not as large as a condo but has everything a condo would have for half the price. Close to Jay Peak for us to go skiing. Would not hesitate to go back. The owner were warm and friendly, they could do enough to make our stay comfortible.

3 of us stayed in the Irish farmhouse - the owners were understanding of our late arrival, cordial, professional and friendly. The cabins are immaculate and well thought out. You will have everything you need for a ski/snowboard trip, at a great price. You will not be disappointed! Often availablility for drop-ins (just call the cell # if they are not home). SWEET!

We spent one wonderful week at Sheady Acres. Shawna and Eamon are friendly, welcoming, and went the extra mile to make sure we got the most out of our stay in the Jay area. The cottage was well built, well appointed, and wonderfully cozy. The perfect place to return to after a day of winter sports. Would definitely return!

“Amazing little treasure near Jay Peak” The Sugar House was a magnificent place to come home to after a day of boarding at Jay Peak. The owners, Eamon and Shawna, were gracious hosts! The wood work is amazing and each cottage has its own unique charm. My girlfriend and I like to cook and we did every night in the small kitchen that includes: hotplate; convection oven; small sink; pots; pans; small fridge; and dishes!
