Why the Owner Chose Nolay

This location seemed like the perfect blend for me, and perspective guests, to enjoy the tranquility of the countryside while still having the amenities of modern day life and the quintessential small specialty shops that France is often known for (bakeries, butchers, flower shops, etc). Here you can get away from the hustle and bustle while still being close to all the amenities of larger cities.

Owner's Map of Nolay

English woman who decided to give up the city and start a new life by doing the things she loves.... restoring historic homes, making people happy, entertaining, buying beautiful things for her antique store.

Our stay in Nolay was a welcome respite contrasting the Paris lifestyle! Our Gite was well appointed, clean and came with a lovely private courtyard. The location is superb being located in the heart of Nolay and beside the town square and church. The vineyards, farms and trails in the area make this a hikers delight. This is the authentic French village we hoped to discover. The local residents mostly speak French but were very welcoming and patient with us as we tried to converse in French to make our daily purchases. The large wicker basket provided in the suite was most handy as we visited all the shops to complete our meal and picnic plans. We were met by Susan's assistant, Laurence, who was most welcoming and was insistent that I speak in French which turned into a valuable French lesson which served me well on the rest of our journey! Probably the most friendly shopkeepers and residents that we encountered. We found a car is necessary to get to Nolay, but not needed once we settled in. (The Taxi-Driver from Beaune was happy to serve us!)

Charming apartment in beautiful Burgundy

We were lucky enough to find this well-maintained, charming Maison for our week's vacation in wine country. It's in the perfect location, close to shops(grocery stores, bread, butcher, sweet shops, pharmacies, etc), the center of cute Nolay, and within easy driving distance of Beaune, Autun. There are a bunch of chateaus to visit and many family-owned wineries very close by as well. We would have loved to meet Susan but did not get the opportunity. My only desire is that it had a local phone but if you have a cell phone that is ok. It was like coming home- Susan has it fully stocked with bread, coffee, milk, OJ and enough cooking utensils to last you the week if you choose to not go out to eat! Great living space, big enough for a family of 4-5, clean, AC, and wireless internet.

WIne country gem

We spent 4 days here in the heart of the Burgundy wine region, in Susan's beautifully restored maison in the center of Nolay, a quintessentially picturesque medieval village. The pictures and description are completely accurate - what you can't see is the warm and helpful hospitality of Susan and her assistant Claudine. Situated above Susan's antique shop (yes, an adventure in itself!), the apartment is large (for 2), very clean and beautifully appointed, with all the comforts of home, including a well-stocked fridge and welcome basket to get you started. From the bedroom window you can look down the cobblestone street to see the church spire and old marketplace, with a lovely cafe and tearoom on the square. The kitchen looks out over Susan's well-maintained garden. Nolay is a charming village just a short 15 minute drive from Beaune, through the vineyards, surrounded by granite cliffs where we hiked (Au Bout de Monde), with gorgeous views of the town from above. We enjoyed pastoral morning jogs, wine-tasting (don't miss Chateau de Meursault nearby), and cooking in our well-equipped kitchen. There's a small grocer across the street, patisserie/boulangerie down the block, and a few cafes and restaurants for dining out. Truly a taste of charming French village life. We hope to stop by again as we explore other regions of France in the future!

Lovely apartment with a great location for sight seeing and convenient to bakeries, supermarket and butcher. We had a wonderful experience. The kitchen was very well-equipped with everything one needed to prepare meals. The bed was furnished with the most beautiful linens, very important to me. The cable tv included many English channels and many CD movies. The living room is very cozy and comfortable. Very convenient parking and a wonderful atmosphere with a church and bar within 30 second walk! A very lovely place to stay.

Fantastic apartment in a beautiful town and a marvellous host

We are travelling for 7 months and were lucky enough to chose Susan's apartment in Nolay. It has been one of the highlights of our trip so far. We stayed in Nolay for a week. The apartment is lovely, wonderfully decorated, very spacious, full kitchen and courtyard, a beautifully restored house and has all the amenities you need. If you want to get a good look and feel for the apartment take a look at the video on Youtube. That is exactly how the place looks. There are few bakeries, charcutiers, restaurants and a supermarket in walking distance. Susan is a wonderful host, we felt at home straight away. She was extremely helpful and went out of her way to make us comfortable and provided a lot of information about things to do in the region. The village is in an amasing region of Cote D'Or and whether exploring it by car or bicycle (Susan provided for free) with worlds best vineyards and wines on the door step. Lots of great produce markets around in short driving distance. We definitely recommend staying here. In fact, we hope to come back very soon.

A week in Burgundy - 10 April 2010 to 17 April 2010

Our week in Nolay at "Susan's Maison" was delightful! The gite is accurately described on the web site, and it's well furnished. Susan lives in the building, and made every effort to make our stay more fulfilling. Her antique shop in the building is an experience in itself. We hope to stay with her again on our next visit to France.
