Over 500 years old, House Maddalena is part of a medieval townhouse located in the historic center of Spello, very close to Pintoricchio's frescos in the Cappella Baglioni. The apartment is located at the first floor, has been recently renovated and elegantly furnished, and has a fully equipped kitchen. The ceiling of the living room is finely decorated and a balcony offers a countryside and mountain view.

House Maddalena offers, in a quite location, a wonderful experience: guests are immersed in Roman monuments and a Medieval landscape they can enjoy walking around. Seeing from the very narrow streets the Subasio mountain and its olive threes landscape is a unique experience.

Guests will have the chance to taste for free the organic olive oil cultivated by the owners in the Spello hills, the Bruschetta (delicious roasted bread with olive oil and garlic) and some other healthy food (like the very special bread made by the owners using several types of organic flours). The owners are available to visit the olive plants, explaining how the olives are cultivated and handled to produce the excellent olive oil. They will also provide detailed information to visit the closest Umbria's towns (Assisi, Foligno, Montefalco, Bevagna, Spoleto, Todi, Orvieto, Gubbio).
Guided excursions to the Subasio mountain can be arranged on request.

The owner is a charming host who goes above and beyond to make your stay in Spello special and enjoyable. He lives nearby and will meet you at the train station, show you around the town, introduce you to people, recommend restaurants, offer you a ride if you need it, and will be over in a moment's notce for any problem, no matter how small. The apt's amenities are acceptable and the patio is truly lovely to sit out on and has a great view of the surrounding valley. I would stay at this location again and recommend it to friends and family.

Superb location in old city of Spello. Listing and photos accurate. Clean, quiet, comfortable and nicely maintained. Owner helpful and knowledgeable. Would have liked a more comfortable sofa and better reading lights. Loved this city and intend to return. It is a great location from which to make day trips. Easy access to great hiking up Mt. Subasio. Walked to small hill town of Collepino where there is one bar and one restaurant. Also hiked to Assisi and returned on bus, which is challenging. Recommended.

During a recent two week re-visit to Spello my wife and I had the pleasure of staying at this charming, in-town apartment. Everything was exactly as described on the VRBO site and Oswaldo kindly provided informative additional information on the town and region. The apartment in perfectly sited within an easy walk to public parking and all that Spello has to offer. And what it offers is a very special town with loads of charm and great resturants yet without being overly touristy. I'd love to live here. As mentioned, this was a second visit and how we missed the stunning Pintoricchio frescoes in the Santa Maria Maggiore (virtually across the street from the apartment) on our prior stay is a mystery. Another highlight was hiking through olive groves on the splendid trail along the ancient Roman aqueduct to arrive in time for a memorable lunch at La Taverna S. Silvestro in Collepino - ok, you can also drive there but you'll be missing something special. Spello is in the "green heart" of Umbria just minutes to some favorite places like Assisi, Montefalco, Trevi and, a personal favorite, Bevagna (excellent walking in the area - the Umbria Tourist Department used to put out a great walking guide for the area - I left a copy in the apartment). Lastly, I should addd that a large part of the pleasure we had this stay was due to the hospitality extended to us by Osvaldo and Lorella. We hope to return and would highly recomend a stay in the Casa Maddalena.

The owner is kind and generous, the flat meets all travel needs and is conveniently located in central Italy. We used it as a home base and made day trips by car to other Umbrian and Tuscan towns. We especially enjoyed the amazing countryside and the absence of crowds. Spello is cute and the local food is amazing; you can easily buy groceries or personal items in town. It was quiet and beautiful and we enjoyed the outside porch area. You can easily reach other towns by train or bus. We hiked the Subasio mountain from Spello to Assisi and there are other trails to explore as well.

We were impressed by Osvaldo's charm and competence plus the welcome pack and facilities. It is a very good base for a city break. The downside is, sadly, the noise from the superstrada at night and the lack of being able to lie out in the sun or shade (there is a small balcony that you can sit on) otherwise it would be 5 star.

As we read from other reviewers Osvaldo is a welcoming host to nice appartment in a lovely city. I made all the choices for our Umbria vacation and your reviews and Osvaldo's accommodations made me look good. Spello is the perfect location as a base in Umbria. Food is great also.

The two of us recently spent two weeks in the Roman/Medieval town of Spello in the region of Perugia. We rented an apartment in Maddalena House from Osvaldo Gervasi and his family. The original building is 15th century--it has been remodeled since then! On our sixth trip to Italy, we wanted to rent in a small town to participate, at least superficially in the daily life of the residents, whether weddings or funerals, or small markets, restaurants or museums or local traditions, we felt very welcome and were struck by the cordial, good humoured citizens we met. Spello is well located to visit other places in Central Italy and we ventured to Orvieto, Montalcino, Gubbio (don't overlook Gubbio!) and others during our brief stay. Spello itself has considerable attraction from a 4400 meter hiking path along an ancient Roman Aqueduct, to several ancient gates and arches in the walled city. There are more than enough restaurants featuring local fare and we'd especially point out two: Il Molino, and Oasi Umbriana. Our apartment was as cool as could be expected with the temperatures in the 90s(F) every day. The 14 foot ceilings help, as do the very tall shuttered windows giving out to the balcony overlooking the Umbrian plain. The Gervasi's were very welcoming and most solicitous of us, providing a refrigerator full of fresh local produce to get us started. Absolutely everything you need is there from small and well-equipped kitchen, to a good-sized bath with shower and a washing machine. Spello is just becoming known and is remarkably clean and well-kept; there is also considerable civic pride we detected again and again. For your information, the local wine (from Montefalco--another wonderful small town to visit) is unknown outside of Italy, we gather. The two or three times we tried it, we concluded that it is an acquired taste.....Umbrian food is notably different than Tuscan with superb olive oils and pasta, little chicken and no seafood to speak of. There are wonderful tomatoes and arugula, and all the the normal vegetables and fruits are available, but less emphasized than elsewhere in Italy. We had a delightful time in all respects and attribute at least some of that to the hospitality of our hosts.

We recently spent a few days in the charming village of Spello which is just a few kilometres from Assisi. The apartment was very clean, very well equipped and within the old town. Oswaldo met us at the railway station and drove us around the village before taking us to the apartment. There was welcoming fruit and wine set out for us and lovely flowers on the table. We spent a lot of time walking around the cobblestone lanes admiring the old, well kept buildings with colourful pots of flowers to enhance them. The peaceful walk along the old Roman aqueduct enabled us to view the beautiful Umbrian countryside. The local church was adorned with wonderful paintings and we enjoyed the food and hospitality of the local traders. A day trip to Assisi via train and bus was well worth while but we were happy to return to the smaller and less touristy village of Spello.

My husband and I stayed for a week - and felt immediately at home. Osvaldo went beyond expectations to familiarize us with area, and assist with car rental arrangements. The apartment was larger and more beautiful than the photos indicate and well located half way up the hill so access to all shops and restaurants was easy, as well as entrance to Roman acqueduct trail. Train station also within easy walking distance. We rented car in order to visit neighboring towns (Assisi, Trevi, Norcia our favorites). Spello is a little gem - few tourists - a less visited and easily accessible Umbrian village. We're in mid-60's - and enjoyed the quiet, the beautiful scenery, and feeling like we were experiencing a taste of life in a real community, rather than a buzzing tourist town.

We spent 4 nights in this cozy apartment in Spello. Our host, Osvaldo was very accommodating and welcoming. He met us at the entrance to Spello and rode around the town with us to show us some highlights like the churches with Pintoricchio frescoes and the hiking trail to the Roman Aqueducts. Upon arrival, there was fresh fruit, a bottle of red (Rubesco) and a bottle of white (Grecchetto) for us. The kitchen was well-stocked with coffee and spices. Osvaldo even stopped by later with some bread and his own olive oil for us to taste. The apartment was very clean and comfortable. There were 4 adults using the apartment and there was plenty of room. The futon couch is a little small for two adults but otherwise, everything was perfect. The location was right in the heart of Spello so it was an easy walk to restaurants, shops, etc. And Spello is in the heart of Umbria (The Green Heart of Italy) which made it a great base town for visiting Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Gubbio, etc. And it was also very reasonably priced. We highly recommend it.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
Nice countryside view, quite location, few meters from the Pintoricchio's frescos located in Capella Baglioni, in the S. Maria Maggiore church.
