Accommodations: Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible Bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)
Over 500 years old, House Maddalena is part of a medieval townhouse located in the historic center of Spello, very close to Pintoricchio's frescos in the Cappella Baglioni. The apartment is located at the first floor, has been recently renovated and elegantly furnished, and has a fully equipped kitchen. The ceiling of the living room is finely decorated and a balcony offers a countryside and mountain view.
House Maddalena offers, in a quite location, a wonderful experience: guests are immersed in Roman monuments and a Medieval landscape they can enjoy walking around. Seeing from the very narrow streets the Subasio mountain and its olive threes landscape is a unique experience.
Guests will have the chance to taste for free the organic olive oil cultivated by the owners in the Spello hills, the Bruschetta (delicious roasted bread with olive oil and garlic) and some other healthy food (like the very special bread made by the owners using several types of organic flours). The owners are available to visit the olive plants, explaining how the olives are cultivated and handled to produce the excellent olive oil. They will also provide detailed information to visit the closest Umbria's towns (Assisi, Foligno, Montefalco, Bevagna, Spoleto, Todi, Orvieto, Gubbio).
Guided excursions to the Subasio mountain can be arranged on request.

A spell in Spello

We recently spent a few days in the charming village of Spello which is just a few kilometres from Assisi. The apartment was very clean, very well equipped and within the old town. Oswaldo met us at the railway station and drove us around the village before taking us to the apartment. There was welcoming fruit and wine set out for us and lovely flowers on the table. We spent a lot of time walking around the cobblestone lanes admiring the old, well kept buildings with colourful pots of flowers to enhance them. The peaceful walk along the old Roman aqueduct enabled us to view the beautiful Umbrian countryside. The local church was adorned with wonderful paintings and we enjoyed the food and hospitality of the local traders. A day trip to Assisi via train and bus was well worth while but we were happy to return to the smaller and less touristy village of Spello.

My husband and I stayed for a week - and felt immediately at home. Osvaldo went beyond expectations to familiarize us with area, and assist with car rental arrangements. The apartment was larger and more beautiful than the photos indicate and well located half way up the hill so access to all shops and restaurants was easy, as well as entrance to Roman acqueduct trail. Train station also within easy walking distance. We rented car in order to visit neighboring towns (Assisi, Trevi, Norcia our favorites). Spello is a little gem - few tourists - a less visited and easily accessible Umbrian village. We're in mid-60's - and enjoyed the quiet, the beautiful scenery, and feeling like we were experiencing a taste of life in a real community, rather than a buzzing tourist town.

We spent 4 nights in this cozy apartment in Spello. Our host, Osvaldo was very accommodating and welcoming. He met us at the entrance to Spello and rode around the town with us to show us some highlights like the churches with Pintoricchio frescoes and the hiking trail to the Roman Aqueducts. Upon arrival, there was fresh fruit, a bottle of red (Rubesco) and a bottle of white (Grecchetto) for us. The kitchen was well-stocked with coffee and spices. Osvaldo even stopped by later with some bread and his own olive oil for us to taste. The apartment was very clean and comfortable. There were 4 adults using the apartment and there was plenty of room. The futon couch is a little small for two adults but otherwise, everything was perfect. The location was right in the heart of Spello so it was an easy walk to restaurants, shops, etc. And Spello is in the heart of Umbria (The Green Heart of Italy) which made it a great base town for visiting Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Gubbio, etc. And it was also very reasonably priced. We highly recommend it.

We traveled to Spello by train and stayed at this lovely apartment for 6 nights. The apartment was conveniently located close (10-minute walk) to the train station and close to restaurants (5 minutes) and shops in Spello. The apartment was clean, quiet, all appliances and lights worked, and it looked as we expected from the pictures advertised on VRBO. The bonus for this apartment was Osvoldo, our host. He did more than we would have expected, such as picking us up at the train station, touring the town, providing recommendations for restaurants and local sightseeing, assisting with car rental, providing us with his family's fresh olive oil, melon, and wine, and it was nice to have him as a point of contact should we need anything. My husband and I discuss when we will go back to Spello, and we'd definitely stay at Osvoldo's apartment again and highly recommend it to others.

We have just spent three perfect days at this apartment in Spello. It is everything the website says and more. We were only steps from the main area where the flower festival is. Whether or not you are coming for the festival this is a very central location to the old town. The owners are extremely kind in leaving fruits, tomatoes, milk, vinegar, oil, coffee, spices, water, wine and even a cold melon awaited us in the refrigerator. Osvaldo's son met us at a central location and rode with us up to the apartment making it easy to find it. Osvaldo then took us on a walking tour of the town pointing out landmarks and made us feel very at home....like we had a friend here in the town. Osvaldo also arranged for my husband to help with the festival preparations and this has become the highlight of our trip. I'm sad to be leaving Spello today but we do so knowing we will plan to come back here on the next trip to Italy.

My husband and I just returned from a week staying in this flat. It is on the first floor (one flight of stairs) and It is perfect for 2 with a nice sized sitting room/kitchen, large bath with washing machine and large bedroom. The kitchen is very well stocked for preparing light meals. There is a table with 4 chairs and one sofa. The flat is in excellent condition. There is also a small balcony. The owner could not be more hospitable. He met us in the center of the town and led us to the flat, gave us a full orientation to the area with suggestions of walks and places to go, explained where to park, etc. He solved a few problems with hot water promptly and welcomed us with fresh fruit and some local wine. The flat is in an excellent location, very close to the center of town. The Pintoricchio frescos are outstanding in 2 churches, and the flat is near to many good restaurants and wine bars. Spello is a magical place, quiet but also close to the main roads so a great place to stay if you want to visit several of the towns in Umbria. It is a great place for a fall visit for a weekend or week of touring the area.

We wanted to find the authenic Umbrian expereince - and Spello is just that! A beautiful town, not overun with tourists but still complete with good shops and restaurants ad near by many other interesting places for hiking or day trips. Our VRBO "hosts" were terrific - able to offer adivse on where to go and help with translations (we speak no Italian). Osvaldo and his family were so helpful - they even took time off to hike the hills with us and show us the ancient aquaduct that runs thru the hills. This, plus the local wine and fruit that greeted us at the apartment is just an example of the expereince we had in Spello. This is a charming, welcoming place - we recommend it 110% and hope to go back one day soon!! Linda and Rick
