Richly appointed with quality furnishings, Caille Jacmel is designed to encourage you to curl up with a good book, put your feet up and watch the game on TV, sleep deeply and wake up refreshed as never before. Finishing touches range from solid granite countertops to the softest of sheets. The kitchen is fully equipped with state-of-the art appliances. For the cooks among you, feel free to use the food processor, fruit juice squeezer, blender and such.
Check your email or work if you must. High speed internet, printer, scanner and fax are available (bring your own laptop). In addition to the entertainment center, there is a good selection of board games.
A lanai surrounds the heated pool, spa and large covered deck. Lounge poolside or try your hand at water volleyball. By day, listen to the spa's waterfall tinkle as it spills into the pool; by night, sip wine in the moonlight and let the bubbles and breezes transport you. Bordered by one of the island's many conservation areas, lush tropical foliage & palms, staghorn ferns & Bird of Paradise ensure your privacy. Pick coconuts, grapefruit, papayas and key limes in season.
Close to Gulf beaches. Just a 10-minute walk from the front porch to the water's edge at Gulfside City Park (Algiers Road). The bike path at the end of the driveway will also take you to the beach as well as to 'most anywhere on the island. Bikes available, too.
I am a dog lover, but have had to impose a "no pet" policy. If you absolutely cannot vacation without your pet, let's talk. Because of the unsecured access to the pool, the cottage is not recommended for families with young children.

Year Purchased: 2003
I have been traveling the world to out of the way places for the past 40 years, helping to improve the health care systems in developing countries as part of the U.S. government's foreign assistance program. One of my first assignments was in Haiti where I fell in love with the land and the people. I had hoped to retire to a little beach house near the southern town of Jacmel, but subsequent political events made that impossible. When not on foreign assignment, I live on Cape Cod with my two flatcoated retrievers Kelly and Jett. With Jett (Kelly is retired), I'm very involved in canine competition--agility and retrieving. I'm also an avid boater, shellfisherwoman and gardener, and am active in community affairs and local politics.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes
My family has been vacationing on Sanibel for nearly 40 years, where I visited them from time to time. My sister, who is the only travel agent left on the island, has been living on Sanibel permanently for nearly 20 years. When it came time to start thinking about retirement, Sanibel was the obvious choice. When I began looking for property to buy, I had very definite ideas of what I wanted. When the realtor suggested I look at 1827 Middle Gulf, I strongly resisted. It was not at all what I had in mind. I finally gave in. One look and I instantly fell in love, as has everyone else who has visited. It didn't take much to transform this adorable little cottage into an upscale version of the beach house I had once dreamed about owning on the shores of the Caribbean in Jacmel, Haiti.
