Markets - You can go to a market every day in Provence if you wish! In Summer they can get very busy, so get there early before 10 as they close at 12.

Some of the better ones are:
Tuesday - Vaison la Romaine - a wonderful selection of food, crafts, clothing and plants. Good in winter too!

Thursday - Nyons - our favorite market as it's so close! Lovely cafes to have lunch at. Wander down to the old bridge through old town.

Friday - Carpentras - plenty of variety.

Saturday - St Cecile le Vigne - A small but lovely provincial market - well worth a visit!

Uzes - Lots of food stalls with local specialties. Worth combining with a trip to the Pont du Gard.

Sunday - Isle-sur-la-Sorgue - The largest antique market outside Paris plus all the usual food and craft stalls. Well worth a trip if you have the time.

Carpentras - Flea market - you'll never know what you will find here!

Bicycling - if you would like to do some riding, we have 3 bikes for the use of guest

Grignon - Chateau Grignon is a beautiful Chateau with an ancient village at the base. You can see it for miles as you pass through Valreas. Lots of lovely boutiques and artisan shops for that special gift will be found here. The Chateau is well worth a tour if you have time, as well as the church. Lunch at one of the many cafes and restaurants at the base of the castle is a lovely way to pass away the afternoon.

Vaison La Romaine - Only 20 minutes away in Vaison - you will find ancient roman ruins that are well preserved, as well as a Roman amphitheater, which is currently being restored. The ancient Castle of the Counts of Toulouse is well worth the climb, as well as the ancient old village on the hill over the ancient bridge.

Avignon - Pont St Benezet - from the song 'Sur le pont d'Avignon…'. The bridge only goes half way across the Rhone - the rest having been swept away by floods a couple of hundred years ago. Euro 3.50 entry which includes a mobile cassette player telling you the history of the bridge - in English.

Road Train - Good one for the children. Euro 2 for a short trip from the Palais des Papes up to the gardens on the hill or Euro 6 for a 40 minute tour of the city.

Palais des Papes - An interesting visit. Self guided tour around the famous palace telling you all about the rooms/history etc. Entry fee Euro 9.50. Good gift shop at the end of the tour.

Lavender, Olives and Wine - All three are in abundance in this area of Provence! Nyons is the olive capital of France and a visit to la Nyonsaise is a must to taste the olives, oils and other wonderful produce. La Vinsobraise (at the beginning of the road to Vinsobres) is the local co-operative housing all the Vinsobres wines

Why the Owner Chose Vinsobres

The first time my husband Graeme and I first came to the south of France was in 2005. We fell in love with the lifestyle, the people, the food and of course the wine! We then travelled around the area and during the course of subsequent visits, we fell in love with Provence and the Drome area in particular. We love the small charming village of Vinsobres, and its proximity to Nyons, as well as being close to skiing in sinter which our whole family loves. The Nyons area is also famous for not having the dreaded mistral winds! Our position is unique as we are only a few hours from Switzerland, Italy and Spain. An ideal place to base yourself whilst visiting the area. Paris is only 2 and a half hours by the TGV.

Owner's Map of Vinsobres

Graeme and I live mainly in a beautiful place called Kangaroo Ground, just outside of Melbourne, Australia. We divide our time between there and the south of France. Our work is such that as long as we have access to the internet, we can work anywhere!

Autumn in Wine Country

Guest: JILL (Melbourne, Australia)

After carefully reviewing many properties, we chose this one for our ten day holiday in the french countryside. The photographs clearly depict the property as we found it. In fact the photos do not really do it justice, it was a very pretty place to stay. It was clean, attractive, comfortable, spacious. All facilities provided were working well with the exception of the telephone which never worked during our stay. We were welcomed and assisted by Collete who was a great help with local knowledge. We were delighted at being able to use the produce in the house (and there was a great deal supplied) and to just replace as we consumed. The furnishings and "extras" truly made us feel at home. The men in our party spent hours watching the grape harvesting and the huge portable wine making machine that arrived below the property. They also enjoyed the sampling that they did on a daily basis and still haven't stopped raving about. We went to every town nearby and visited the markets as suggested, enjoyed the local scene, ate the beautiful local produce and relaxed at home. We ate on the balcony, bathed in the hot tub and wandered the streets. Our car was parked nearby and was perfectly safe at all times. Visitors would need a car to enjoy this area which is just a little north of Provence, but well placed to see mountains, gorges, towns, markets, Roman ruins, nature, beautiful quaint villages and chateaus. We had a peek at the other property in the Village and that is very attractive too! We do not know the owners of these properties.

Wonderful house, but watch for hidden fees

Guest: David (Maryland, USA)
Date of Stay: 08/07/11 Review Submitted: 10/08/11

We stayed in this house in August 2011 and had a wonderful week. The village is charming and the region excellent for walking, exploring small towns, and wine. One caveat, though, is that the house ended up costing more than advertised. The owners require a bond payment and, unfortunately, when it came time to get it back, the owners deducted their PayPal fees, so that we received US$ 62 less than we should have gotten back. A disappointing end to what could have been an excellent overall experience.

Owner response:Unfortunately some clients don't read what's in the websites and rental documents! We specifically state that we do not pay any bank fees or charges. Unfortunately in this case the client did not read it. Also, if they had set up their paypal with a bank account instead of a credit card there would have been no fees. This is the first time anyone has complained about us deducting the fees. How could we return a smaller bond than we were given? It doesn't make sense. For future renters we have made the type larger so people will not miss this.

Great expectations....

fully met! As experienced holiday renters in the South of France, we apply certain criteria when looking for a suitable rental - a well maintained, well furnished (preferably old) village house with a garden, views and easy parking. The ideal property would also have amenities within walking distance and its village location would give easy access to the surrounding region. Not surprisingly, we have never found our ideal - until now! Chez Hubbert in the heart of Vinsobres has all the foregoing and more - the hot tub! This really is a bonus in a village location where space is often at a premium. The photos and description give an accurate description of what to expect. The house is furnished and equipped to the high standard hoped for (but not often found) in the 21st century, is clean and well maintained (again not always found). There are great views of the vineyards and countryside from the house, garden and especially - in my opinion! - the hot tub. We strolled to the bakers and restaurant in under a minute and to the handy general grocers in a few minutes. We parked safely around the corner from the house with absolutely no problem. The big decision each day was whether to stay at home or go off exploring. The village provided everything we needed for the former and, as regards the latter, we made use of the tourist office, also right in the village, next to the post office. On Thursdays we left the car behind and caught the weekly bus to the market in Nyons. Karen and Graeme were staying at their other property in the village whilst we were there - they made sure we were comfortable and provided contact details. They even booked us a table at the restaurant on our first night - such attention to detail was much appreciated! All in all a thoroughly enjoyable experience and, compared to other properties we have rented, value for money.

Owner response:Thankyou Trevor for your kind cmments! We appreciate them very much and hope it gives other the chance to enjoy our lovely "French Experience!" as much as you both have. Thanks again, Karen & Graeme Hubbert

To Karen, Thank you for the most "French" experience we have had. Your house is gorgeous and the rooms are charming. We appreciated the extra touches - cup of tea upon arrival, glass of wine and the conversation! Thankyou for answering all our questions! We both have thoroughly enjoyed our time in France and your home and hospitality have been the "high point of our trip". We would both love to come back in the future! Aurevoir.

Dear Karen, Graeme & Alex, We have thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful break at your beautiful French home. It has lived up to all our expectations. Thanks to Alex for kindly calling to welcome us. We were all impressed with his lovely manner. All 6 children said this has been the best holiday yet.. they have horse trekked, go-carted, swam... it goes on! They will have many lovely memories. This is a special part of France and we are thrilled to have visited it...hopefully we will be back! We need another day at the market in Nyons...it really filled our senses. A special thankyou to Collette for going over and above the call of duty by allowing us to arrive at a very late hour! It was lovely to be greeted by such a beautiful person... and to be able to have a cup of tea after the journey. The nougats on the bed were a lovely touch! Merci beaucoup encore!
