This was the first time my husband and I did not go to an all inclusive resort and it was by far the best vacation we have ever had. What a beautiful treasure we stumbled upon....thank you so much Joanne for choosing to share this amazing property with others and for all your support during our stay. You are an awesome host and a lovely person. For those of you who are contemplating a vacation here, don't hesitate, the cottage is very cozy and the garden is stunning. It was so nice to swim every morning before having our coffee on the veranda while watching all the birds and lizards. Then off to the most pristine secluded beaches we have ever seen. Joanne was extremely helpful as far as suggesting things to see and do on the island so you can do lots or you can just chill out. A vehicle is a must, preferably a 4X4 if you want to tour this amazing island. This was such an awesome experience we are already planning our return next year.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Kevin & Sue It was a pleasure meeting & sharing with you, thank you so much. I do look forward to seeing you both again next year. See you soon!! All the best, take care. Jo

Joanne was incredibly understanding and very helpful at almost any time of the day. very willing to give recommendations, and her restaurant ideas were great. The property was absolutely gorgeous, and it was very difficult when it came time to leave. The front porch makes the perfect spot to eat meals, relax and enjoy the weather and surroundings. Located very near to the harbor and several good supermarkets, getting almost anything was quite convenient. We found the cottage to be the perfect size and it had an excellent layout. privacy that the garden brings was excellent. Joanne grew most of the trees from seed, and she designed the layout spectacularly. Thanks to Joanne for a great week, and we will definitely consider returning in the future.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Blaise, Thank you for the reveiw, I wish you both all the best and look forward to having you back again for more adventures in Antigua. Take care. Joanne

Lovely cottage living up to it's description. Very clean, comfortably outfitted, delightful garden and porch. Nothing better than breakfast on the front porch in the company of the hummingbirds and bananaquiks. Joanne our host was very helpful. Offered to get supplies in for our first breakfast because we would be arriving on a Sunday (stores closed). She got wonderful items and bonus treats, especially produce and fruit. Throughout the week she offered great tips on places to go. Swimming pool is great too, very quiet and relaxing. As light sleepers, we had to find a solution to the tree frogs and neighbourhood barking dogs, but we did and then slept well. A very nice and relaxing week. Thanks so much Joanne. My husband and I ended our week on Antigua with a few days at the Bamboo Cottage. I sit here this morning drinking coffee on the porch, surrounded by beautiful tropical vegetation & watching the birds and lizards feed. The pool is really nice, very clean and surrounded by tropical plants. Joanne is a wonderful host, providing fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh squeezed juice and great recommendations for beaches to visit and places to dine in the area. The cottage is very clean and comfortable and Joanne made us feel very welcome. We hope to return soon!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Kim & Doug, it was nice meeting you, I look forward to seeing you both again but for longer next time. Thank you for the review especially while you were still here. Take care Joanne

My wife and I had a wonderful time in Antigua, especially at Bamboo Cottage. For those travelers who aren't into "touristy" resorts and like to be more independent, this is the perfect spot. Joanne's hospitality was above and beyond, and we felt at home during our one week stay. Not only did she provide us daily directions around the island, but had excellent recommendations for dining and activities. If we ever have the good fortune of coming back, we would definitely stay here...thanks again Joanne!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Perhaps it is said that the south side of Antigua is undeveloped, but in my opinion that's all the more reason to stay with Joanne Lighthizer in either of her charming rental properties just a few minutes from Falmouth Harbor. We stayed in both the main house and Bamboo Cottage as a result of our travel plans and Joanne's accommodating nature. She is a charming hostess, helpful with tips, fresh fruit and vegetables, and she brought us the most delicious tuna steaks from her other occupation, organizer of farmer's markets. I'd advise you to walk the last 500 meters to Rendezvous Bay and not drive over the last rocky bluff; either way, you've found paradise. Bring plenty of water and a picnic, plus your snorkeling gear. A short walk from Joanne's is a grocery store; across the parking lot are a restaurant and a fresh seafood vendor; walk or drive a bit further and there is a bakery that turns into a pizza restaurant at night. But on the night we planned on casual seafood, we explored down to the marina and decided after a long chat in a bar with a seafaring English doctor named Russell that we'd stay and eat at Cambusa. This was the best meal of the trip, though we were underdressed for the coolness of the ocean breezes and European semi-formality of the wealthy yacht-owner clientele. Wear a light sweater around your neck to fit in. Other highlights of the trip were a day at Half-Moon Bay on the southeast coast, getting lost in the island's interior, giving the politest schoolchildren ever a ride to their village, buying dinner to go from a couple of lovely women who informed us that the road we we on would in fact not take us over the mountain range that rises behind Falmouth Harbor...try the local food. The rice with beans is great. It was all great! For some reason my wife would like to visit other places on vacation, but I really can't understand why. It is my hope that we return again and again to Antigua and stay with Joanne if she'll have us. I don't see why not, except that we kind of broke her beach umbrella trying to stick it into the white coral sands of Tranquility Bay. (Don't go there; it's pretty from a distance, but it's a pain to find the access road and there's no visibility in the water.) Well, as they say in Antigua, ONE LOVE, people. You'll feel it once you see Rendezvous Bay. Thanks again, Joanne!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you so much for your review. It was a pleasure meeting you and I do look forward to seeing you both again one day. Take care Joanne

We had a wonderful week at Joanne's cottage in February. The cottage was clean, cozy, and well-equipped for cooking meals and relaxing. It's easy to tell that Joanne has given a lot of thought to making sure guests enjoy their stay. During our stay it was like we had our own pool, which our baby daughter enjoyed (and we did, too!). The grocery store is nearby, so you can go out for a stroll and stock up on what you need. There are a few beaches nearby, including Pigeon Beach and Galleon Beach, and also Shirley Heights, which has a great party on Sunday nights. It would be best to have a car for at least part of your stay, especially if you want to tour the island and visit the different beaches. We didn't, but managed fine with a local taxi driver recommended by Joanne (he was always prompt and friendly). Staying at the cottage isn't like being at a resort, but we found it to be better than an all-inclusive. That depends on the kind of vacation one is looking for. The cottage was as wonderful as I, being the planner for our vacation, had hoped and definitely exactly as described. It was our first vacation rental and we were not disappointed. Accommodation aside, what really made this a five-star was Joanne's efforts to make our stay as pleasant as possible. She went above and beyond to ensure we were looked after, from getting us groceries for our arrival, to taking us on a tour of Shirley Heights (to see the wonderful ocean view). Her attention to detail and friendliness were unsurpassed. If you're looking for quality, this is hard to beat. I look forward to seeing pictures of Ava and hopefully seeing you all again. take care. all the best Joanne

Bamboo Cottage and Joanne just made our vacation an unforgettable one. The cottage is very comfortable, cozy and well maintained. The beautiful garden that surrounds it just makes you feel in paradise. You can either relax in the porch sipping coffee, or in the hammock listening to the birds, or sitting at the pool while enjoying the beautiful nature. The cottage is very well located, close to English Harbour, Nelsons Dockyard, several beaches which are a must Pigeon Beach, Halfmoon Bay, Rendezvous Bay (absolutely worth the trip). You can either buy your groceries close to the cottage, or eat out in one of the nice places in English Harbour. You should definitely rent a car, even better if you get a 4x4. Driving is totally relaxing and the scenery is breath taking. Last but not least Joanne is the perfect host. She will help you all the way from your trip planning to the last minute. She will make sure you will enjoy your stay! She has great tips, great produce from the market, a great property and a great smile that she always shares with you! Thanks Joanne, you really made our vacation a very special one.Owner response: Thank you Juan for the great review. It was a pleasure to meet you both and share this place with you. I do hope you will be back and I wish you all the best for 2012.

We arrived in Antigua to pouring rain and drove to Bamboo Cottage to receive a lovely warm welcome from Joanne. The cottage is nestled in Joannes wonderful tropical garden and is just how it looks in the pictures. Inside is everything you need for a self-catering holiday and if something is not there Joanne will soon provide it for you. The sun made its appearence on the Monday and we started to explore the Island, you really need a 4x4 for this as the roads are not in good condition. Bamboo cottage is situated in the south part of the island and is only a short drive away from Nelsons Dockyard, Shirley Heights and English Harbour, the two local beaches are Pigeon and Gallion and both are lovely. There are many exclusive and inclusive resorts on the island but most of them allow you access to their facilities and always their beach as all beaches in Antigua are public. We highly recommend Non Such Bay resort for the lovely lunch, Antigua Villiage (next door to Sandals) for the clear water and friendly people and Hermitage Bay resort for the beautiful deserted beach. Just a minute from Bamboo cottage is Baileys supermarket which was an experience in its self the owner has been there all her life and is an amazing character. You can get everything you need in there and they had just opened a fish booth whilst we were there so now you can buy fresh/frozen fish daily. There is also an excellent pizzeria just further on and the chef bakes fresh bread and croissants daily - wonderful although not great for the waist line. I would recommend Bamboo cottage if you would like to see the real Antigua, luxury it is not there is no TV, dogs bark and tree frogs croak all night and you have goats and chickens as neighbours. However you have a lovely pool to swim in, a lovely garden to sit in, and a veranda to have dinner on (beware though take lots of Mosquito spray for the evenings). Joanne is a lovely host and very knowledgeable about the Island. She also has other accommodation at the base of her house and she showed us around this and it gorgeous especially if there are more than two however for us Bamboo cottage was ideal. We left Antigua in the sunshine having had a really wonderful holiday, we had laughed, we had swum in the sea every day even when it rained, eaten well and most of all had a lovely rest. Thank you Joanne for sharing your home with us.Owner response: Thank you for the review, It was unfortunately a very wet time while you were, but you still seem to enjoy yourselves, it was a pleasure to share my space with you. Take care and all the best for 2012.

Bamboo Cottage, Antigua (Falmouth Harbour), and Joanne's hospitality surpassed all expectations and was one our best vacations ever! The cottage is very private, clean, fully stocked, and set in a beautiful garden. We loved evenings in the hammock on the deck and early morning swims. There is a nice beach about 5 minutes away but the highlight of our trip was the beach at Rendezvous Bay. It is only accessible by 4x4, but we had the entire bay to ourselves for most of the days. There is amazing hiking along the coast a short drive from the cottage and great waterfront seafood restaurants (Sunra was our fav). I also recommend a private sailing charter - Joanne has lots of great recommendations.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Scott, thank you for the review, so pleased that you enjoyed the cottage and Antigua, I look forward to seeing you both again, Take care. Joanne

I cannot praise bamboo cottage or Joanne the host enough. It was utterly perfect. My husband and I spent 2 weeks there in September 2011on our honeymoon and I can honestly say it could not have been better. The cottage is gorgeous. Well appointed, well decorated, very attractice and very clean. Joanne was delightful, apart from being an unobtrusive and informative host she did so many little things for us just to be kind. Some chilled guava juice, freshly squeezed in the fridge when we arrived, a barbeque suddenly put together in case we wanted to barbeque the local catch. She did shopping for us and basically was lovely. her garden is amazing. Full of tropical plants, hummingbirds and colourful dragonflies. it was delightful. Antigua is lovely. We enjoyed being the only people on the beaches in the slow season and we found the food in local restaurants to be superb. We hired a car with a local company that joanne reccommended and they brought us to the cottage when we arrived after our long flight from England. The car was a 4 x 4 (definately to be recommended) Each day we went and explored the island and then returned for a swim in the charming pool by the cottage. We intend to return as soon as we can - next time with our children when we will probably rent Joanne larger apartment under her house which I looked at and was also impressed by and thought perfect for a family. The cottage is PERFECT. I can't praise it enoughRecommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The pictures don't do this place justice. The vegetation is much larger now. Better then expected. The cottage is fairly new with lots of exposed wood. I think its 20x20 with 2 floors. Very cute and cozy. There is a little view of the harbour and boats from the upstairs bedroom deck. We stayed a week and had the pool to ourselves as the main house was not rented. I'm guessing its15x25 deepest end 7ft. Its amazing to swim surrounded by huge green leaves, bamboo and singing birds. The cottage is downhill from the main house and feels very separate each having their own driveway. The place is surrounded by a tall wooden fence with gate at the parking area. Its on a dead end road so not many people around. There are hefty doors that can be locked on both the front and back. We felt very secure. Lots of restaraunts about 5-10 min drive from the cottage down in the harbour. Pigeon beach is close and nice with shade trees, tables and calm swim area. Our 2 favorite were Jolly beach and Long Bay beach. Jolly beach park at Castaways restaraunt and rent umbrella/chair for $10 each. We had jerk chicken with potatoe wedges and green salad for $15 US. It was really good. The water at Jolly is crystal blue as far as you can see. Long Bay beach park at Beach House restaurant. The umbrella/chair is $7 US each. The fish come up around your feet. It was fun watching peoples surprise as they are wading and saw fish swimming around them. Be sure and walk near the rocks to see the most types of fish. Its very shallow. We walked out 300+ feet from shore and probably could have walked further. We also did snorkeling but you can see the most fish right there at the rocks. Shirley Heights you can eat and enjoy the great view. We recommend Creole cruise out of Jolly Harbour took us to Bird Island for lobster, salad, rum punch, chardonay and snorkeling. We got this from vendor at Jolly beach. We encounter no vendors at Long Bay beach. Only the cruise vendors at Jollly beach. Lots of vendors at Dickenson beach. They took no for an answer so not to much a problem. The Antiguans park in the roads so driving is not fun but necessary to get to all their amazing beaches! Most everyone was very friendly. We went to the airport 2 hrs early and there were long long lines. They had to hold the planes to get everyone through security. The stewardess said come 3 hrs early next time as this is a common problem.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We had taken both the house and the cottage: after a discussion between my two my sons it has been decided that the cottage would have been taken by the elder and her girlfriend. My child and her girl friend were very happy there. The cottage is adorable, the garden magnificent. Everything has taste, love, and years of dedicated settlement. Joanne (who runs a farm for local genuine Antiguans food) is a wonderful guest, always available, always nice and ready to bring everything you need from the farm. Everything is perfect! Hot water, linen, Wi-Fi, calm, light, birds songs,.. The place is also quite close to Falmouth and English harbour where we used to go every day as my uncle participated to the regatta (actually his boat won the elegance award). Falmouth and English Harbour are the nicest places in Antigua, plenty of restaurants and café’ and so many beautiful sailing boats. A car is needed but we enjoyed having it so that we could go around and visit the whole island and its secret bays. I’m already looking forward to go back to Antigua at this very special house, full of charm and beauty.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We travelled from march 27 to april 3 2011. The place is magical, luxurious gardens and totally conform with the discription we read on the site. Joanne is very heplful and funny. The Bamboo Cottage is very clean and spacious. The grocery store is just nearby. The English Harbour, Shirley points, Devil`s Bridge, Half Moon Bay, Galley Bay Beach, Darkwood Beach are some of the most seen spot nearby. I highly recommand this house for every one. If you what to enjoy the island you should rent a 4X4 because some of the road are quite bumpy. A very special thanks to THE HOST JOANNE for all the precious information on the island, on the people and all the special things we should do on this wonderful island... We spent a week at Bamboo Cottage in February 2011 and relaxed in what was essential our own private island retreat. The cottage is set privately on the property surrounded by a wonderful garden and the pool was ours to use at will. The cottage is well kept and the breeze in the second floor bedroom made it very comfortable for sleeping. Joanne is very hospitable and was able to provide lots of information about local restaurants and activities. English Harbour has alot of night life. The restaurants are good and we would recommend The Mad Mongoose and Cloggy's. If you are interested in snorkelling you can snorkel off the beach at Galleon Beach (at the base of Shirley's Heights on the east side of the bay opposite Nelson's Harbour). Great fish, soft corals and some hard corals. This was a wonderful place to stay.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This was our first visit to Antigua, and our first venture into a non-resort vacation. We stayed 10 days at Bamboo Cottage. The pool, grounds and house were delightful. I especially enjoyed the hammock on the porch. Joanne was thoughtful, helpful and non-intrusive. She was a great ambassador for Antigua; a wealth of knowledge and with many recommendations. Two stores within walking distance: Bailey's grocery and Crabhole Liquors - both worth a visit. Shirley Heights Sunday night a must! We visited in off season, so some restaurants/svcs were not available however Trappas in Falmouth and Roti King in St. John's were open and both were favourites. A visit to St. John's recommended, but truthfully, the many beaches are the stars! Rendevous, Half Moon Bay and Turner Beach were all fantastic. Public Transit is an adventure; local taxi driver Jason was great. Privacy, beauty, relaxation with a dash of adventure. Thank you Joanne.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I stayed here for 8 nights in late February 2011. We choose small or private places for our travel and the cottage was perfect for us. Joanne was a great host, around and helpful when we needed something but it was very private. The place is comfy and wonderfully located. We visited beaches on every part of the island (roads are pretty bad) and had dinner most evenings in English Harbor. Renting a car is a must! Long Beach in the northeast was one of our favorite beaches and Abracadabra one of our favorite restaurants. The cottage is just great for two people wanting a place to hang their hat! Joanne showed us the larger rental she has and it's more of a home than the cottage and just georgous. We just had a great vacation and will stay with Joanne next time we visit Antigua.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
