"Hale Honu" or "Turtle Hut," aptly named for the endangered hawksbill turtles nestling along our black sand beach, offers a tranquil haven to human travelers, too! Perched on a bluff with Mauna Loa Volcano as its background and the soft blue waters of the Pacific as its foreground, Sea Mountain welcomes visitors seeking "Old Hawaii" at its best.

Words such as serene...peaceful...secluded...oasis...historic...natural...and unspoiled are aptly used to describe this special, unique place.

Ideally located between Kailua-Kona and Hilo and only a short drive to Volcanoes National Park and its awesome eruption shows, Turtle Hut overlooks the magnificent Pacific Ocean AND the 18th Green and Fairway of Sea Mountain's Par 72 Golf Course.

Bask in our glorious tradewinds-cooled sunshine or under our spectacular star-filled night sky! Our beach has been consistently rated among the most exotic, natural beaches in the world by beach afficianados, so the unit is equipped with great beach chairs and mats, umbrella, and basic snorkel sets.

Turtle Hut at Punaluu Black Sand Beach! Now from $60 Per Night

Year Purchased: 2003

Why the Owner Chose Naalehu

I first saw Colony One at Sea Mountain way back in the '80s when we stopped at the Black Sand Beach on a Tour Bus, and I vowed then that I would find a way to stay there on my very next trip to the islands. Sea Mountain is unique, not only to the Big Isle, but truly is not to be found anywhere else in the entire island chain! Not a ticky-tacky high rise, this small complex sits on a bluff like a quaint Polynesian Village might have, with the calm, turquoise Pacific Ocean at its foreground and the dark green forestland of Mauna Loa Volcano as its background. I can't imagine a more perfect location for a vacation, as we're located half-way between the "big" towns of Kona and Hilo, and only a 30 minute drive to the Volcanoes National Park. There's plenty to do without ever leaving the resort, as well! With our own magnificent black sand beach, Sea Mountain Golf Course, a beautiful fresh water pool and a volcano-style spa, tennis courts, tropical gardens and manicured lawns to enjoy, I jumped at the first possible chance to purchase one that I could afford, in 2003. I've had nothing but positive experiences managing the rentals myself, and I've met people from all over the world! I've made enough $$ in the last couple of years to offer free stays to returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan, and have a few more scheduled this year. Life just doesn't get any better than this! So come and find out for yourself!

The Unique Benefits at this Condominium

The perfect day for me while staying at the Turtle Hut myself always begins with watching the SUN-RISE out of the ocean with a freshly brewed cup of local coffee, right on my lanai! Remember, we're located on the windward coast, so its the sunrise that lights up the sky with every glorious color you can imagine, and I promise you'll re-define "pink" and "orange" and "red" and try to find new ways to define those desciptors. I always have great company on the lanai, as our neighborhood cardinals and finch families will be waiting for me --sometimes chirping their impatience from atop the chairs! -- calling for their pieces of fruit and nuts! We've given them all names, down to the smallest male yellow finch with a broken left foot, who we call - you guessed it: "Lefty". When I'm lucky enough to have finished most of a papaya from the garden here, I usually take off for a good, long walk. There are endless walking or hiking choices here, depending on your conditioning, time and interests. One of my guests called me one day so thrilled that he had found waterfalls! on his hike during a heavy rain!

Owner's Map of Naalehu

I believe that my move to Hawaii in 1997 is a perfect example of why the Big Island is referred to as the "Healing Island". Sure, I had fallen in love with Hawaii ever since my first vacation here in the '80s, but I was far from financially ready to make the move when pow! my life blew up! one insane day and the decision to move was made for me! And so it was, within one month, I resigned from my position as a police administrator, divorced my abusive and increasingly violent husband, and hopped a plane bound for Kailua-Kona, Hawaii with my 80 year old mother. Why Hawaii? It was the only place on earth where I had always felt completely happy and healthy and I where I knew I would be safe to begin a new life.
It is often said that the Mana, or "Spirit", of this island calls out to those whose hearts need to heal. I know now that it was not a coincidence that I was called here or that I found an old coffee plantation house next to the most famous "place of refuge" on the island, "Pu'uhonua O Honaunau". With pennies down, we bought it and learned how to grow and roast coffee! and hung macadamia nuts to dry in our old panty hose! Eventually, we sold that wonderful place for such a profit that you may now guess the rest of this story: yes! That first humble blessing, our place of refuge, sold for an amount large enough to provide not only for our next home, but also for the purchase of this beautiful condo at Punalu'u! And now I am blessed to offer a haven and oasis to travellers and visitors from all over the world, whether weary from life and needing to heal, as I was; or those coming to revel in the wonders of Hawaii! I still pinch myself often, to be sure this is all real!

    • We spent 3 weeks in Hawaii and our week at Turtle Hut was the VERY BEST!!! This modern and immaculate condo has the most welcoming decor of palm trees and, what else--turtles! It overlooks beautiful tropical gardens and ocean bluffs. It is also first class in every way: everything needed for cooking is at your fingertips; the lanai provides the perfect and peaceful outdoor dining view, and a lovely pool and hot tub welcome all to relax and watch the spectacular waves crash into sea. The location is also perfect, being halfway between Hilo and Kona making it easy to explore the lower half of the island (Black Sand beach being a minute down the road, and Volcano National Park only 35 minutes away!) And the nearby town of Na-alehu is charming, complete with farmers market, grocery store, bakery and restaurant. There is not one negative thing we can say about our stay at Turtle Hut. Wherever our daily adventures took us, we loved coming "home" each night, knowing we could wake up in this lovely piece of Hawaiian paradise. We really hated to leave.

    • We have stayed many places on the islands over the years and big island is our favorite. The "turtle hut" is by far the best spot on big island! We love this quiet beautiful place. The views are spectacular and the lanai looks over the largest stretch of undevoloped coastline left in all the hawaiin islands. Barb's condo has everything you could every want and more! We will be back...

I wish I had discovered this Guestbook feature long ago, as it would be filled with nothing but 100% favorable reviews from my guests from all over the globe, for more than six years now! Rather than go back through my paper Guestbook and re-type all of those comments, I can easily and honestly say that their comments always focus on the great VIEWS; the wonderful LOCATION for exploring the Big Isle's favorite attractions; the unit's decor and furnishings; the pool and spa, and usually the great bargain prices that we rent for! Truly, the pleasure has been mine, too, in meeting so many great people from so many places and sharing stories by the pool or hot tub! Mahalo & a hui hou! (Until we meet again.............) Thank you so much for the basket of goodies! We thoroughly enjoyed it! and the coffee was the best we've ever tasted. We loved our stay in your place and explored many of the out-of-the-way parts of the island. We even hiked into the Green Sand Beach, I'm proud to say! Arduous, but worth every huff and puff to see this wonder of nature and the volcano! We're definitely coming back! Thank you for a lovely stay!

Mahalo nui loa, Barbara. What a beautiful place you have here, a little piece of paradise! We explored Volcanoes National Park and saw lots of turtles on the Black Sand Beach. We only wish we could have stayed much longer here, because three days was much too short a time! We WILL be calling you for another stay, and thanks for all of your tips and pointers, too.

Wow! We came down to Punalu'u for a family wedding on the beach and decided to reserve one of these condos we've seen along the golfcourse, but never have stayed in. What a wonderful oasis this place is! So UN-like Kona and its traffic and crowds and noise. Its hard to believe that only a little over an hour's drive takes you to this place and its serenity! I couldn't begin to count the stars in the night sky, so beautiful, Barbara! Thank you so much!

Aloha Barbara! We saw dolphins, turtles and whales and lava, but don't worry, we left the lava on the beach. After all are (sic) adventures, it was nice to come back to such a nice place at night. I loved the games you stocked and the movies too. The bed was comfortable and we all fit in it!
