Property description

Only adventurous need apply
This is an Off Grid, Remote, primitive cabin experience, but, with modern amenities such as flushing toilet, hot water, electric lights, stereo, a functioning kitchen and movies if its a dreary day. The heat is provided by sun and wood and electricity is Solar.
We are on 70 acres inside of 1000's of acres of public land.!!!
Winter is here; A great time of year. Hustle Bustle bringin you down? Ah, to know how it feels to be un-wound. Sit by the fire and read a long book, drink in the silence, let your self off the hook. Come on up and stay for a while. Guaranteed to bring on a smile!
Snow is now on the ground, see it glisten in the light. Now---warm yourself by the fire. Hot chocolate any one? This is truly an Old Fashioned, over the river and trough the woods, down home, John Denver, Colorado Mountain experience that has become nearly Extinct.

This is the time of year where one can truly appreciate the passive solar design of the place as the sun comes up over the eastern ridge and warms the kitchen. Pull up the queens chair in front of the picture window observe the morning light as it glimmers off the snow on the high peaks of the Sangre's, sip your coffee and feel the sun as it warms your sol.
We encourage you to visit in the winter but keep this in mind; You will definitely want 4 wheel drive as well as chains [just in case]. Most of the time our road has very little snow on it but you never know cause it is in the Rockies. Also if your plan is to base yourself out of here to ski Monarch every day you might want to think of staying somewhere else cause we're an hour from monarch in good conditions.
Note: This is a Rustic Cabin! If you are a clean/neat freak this may not be the place for you.
SCROLL DOWN TO SEE OTHER SERVICES WE OFFER.!
So, when is the last time that the only sound you could hear was the music birds make?
When was the last time that without question you knew you were looking at the Milky Way?
The Way Back Inn is, well; Way back In. For us this has been an 19 year Dream. The 'Inn' is a 1880's Miner's cabin with a tire and straw bale addition built by us. If you ever wanted to be completely off the grid this is the place. Having said that be forewarned; this place is not for the weak of heart, but for those people who want a real adventurous back -country experience with modern amenities. The road is steep and rocky. It doesn't necessarily need four wheel drive but we recommend it--- or a high clearance vehicle, and somebody behind the wheel who likes to drive. we are only 30 minutes from town and 20 minutes from the Arkansas river and all that it has to offer. The 'Inn' sits in a high valley overlooking the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and one can literally hike or mountain bike right out the front door. However, there are no obvious trails for the hiker. Rather; seemingly un-charted terrain in almost every direction. This is a place where you make your own trail. Where one can get a real sense of Wild. Remote! Quiet! Just you and your breath. Awesome. Awesome views as well. Well what can I say. It is quite possibly one of the most unique places you could ever stay.

If you ever wanted to have a backcountry wedding or reunion you will want to consider us. There is ample room for camping and Bon Fires!!

The Way Back Inn is not the kind of place that you use as a home base to further explore the greater region. It is best used as a place to sit and stay a while, be still, listen to the trees breathe, where the wind blowing through them sounds just like the sea. to explore, to rediscover.

Think of this place as a back-country Cabin like the kind you hike or ski to. Like the kind of place you read about in a Jack London novel. A place where you can really get away.

Ute Indians once camped here. The original cabin was built for the foreman of the Longfellow mining district [a short hike to the west] and actually had a telegraph line running to it. The 80 acres was homesteaded in the 30's by 'the Goat Lady'. She raised goats and grew potatoes. The property then was aptly named Arrowhead ranch, for all the arrow heads found when plowing up the field. The Jasper that the Indians used to make their arrow heads comes out of the ground in the surrounding area! Supposedly before they first plowed there were 8 tipee rings in the meadow. One can still feel their presence.

We have woke up to 20 head of elk in the meadow, and deer at our window
Like one of the lines from a song I wrote of the place 'where the air is clean, the spring is wet, and a view of the Sangre's as far as you can see'. ----- Peace.

Cooler days that encourage us to take long hikes, cooler nights to cozy around the fire, the lighting, crisp night sky's for intense star gazing. Here at the Way Back Inn we luv Autmn! This is a great spot for some stargazing, or taking in a morning or evening hike!!

Notes:

Because of the uniqueness of this property be sure to read the description thoroughly and contact us before booking.!

This place is best suited as it's own destination. If you are planning to do a lot of site seeing or ski Monarch every day well we probably aren't a good fit as we are an hour away from Monarch Ski Area on good roads.

The road in is 3 miles and 1500 vertical feet on an unmaintained BLM road. This is why we suggest 4 wheel or all wheel drive and some clearance at the minimum like a Subaru outback or so.

For additional fees we can provide:

1] Groceries bought and stocked prior to your arrival

$30.00 plus 10% of bill.

2] Wells Gulch Bar-B-Que. Kick back, relax, and let us cook you our famous Bar-b-que over our bonfire, all the while being entertained by Greg as he tells you stories, history, and plays guitar and sings.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 1994

About the owner: Here we are...Terri and Greg! We were married in a meadow on this property in June of 2000. Greg is a Retired Ski Bum and strawbale home builder. Terri is a homemade soap maker. Together we are the proprietors of wanderLust road. a funkgroovin mercantile offering ART, RE-CYCLED GOODS, and CONSIGNMENT. Located at 146 W. First Street in down town Salida. We enjoy all that Chaffee County has to offer including hiking, biking, skiing, ice skating, playing music with the locals and hanging out with friends. We have 3 grown boys, 2 of which are married and 6 grandchildren which are all lots of fun! We dream of saddling up our tandem bike and riding off into the sunset....one of these days!

Why the Owner Chose Salida:
We did'nt choose this place. It chose us!

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
To be and live off the grid is, empowering to say the least. So is being in a 'defacto' wilderness area. Birds and wildlife abound and we can hike for hours in any direction without seeing a sign of human activity, just animal tracks and bird songs. But the best part is to simply relax, enjoy the view and listen. --- Oh yea. did I mention the night sky!!
