Keywords: Strawbale with Historic Cabin, Located in the back-country in a de-facto wilderness area. Perfect for family reunions, company parties and outdoor weddings.
The Way Back Inn is, well; Way back In. For us this has been a 18 year Dream. The "Inn" is a 1880's Miner's cabin with a tire and straw bale addition built by us. If you ever wanted to be completely off the grid this is the place. Having said that be forewarned; this place is not for the weak of heart, but for those people who want a real adventurous back -country experience with modern amenities. The road is steep and rocky. It doesn't necessarily need four wheel drive but we recommend it--- or a high clearance vehicle, and somebody behind the wheel who likes to drive. we are only 30 minutes from town and 20 minutes from the Arkansas river and all that it has to offer. The "Inn" sits in a high valley overlooking the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and one can literally hike or mountain bike right out the front door. However, there are no obvious trails for the hiker. Rather; seemingly un-charted terrain in almost every direction. This is a place where you make your own trail. Where one can get a real sense of Wild. Remote! Quiet! Just you and your breath. Awesome. Awesome views as well. Well what can I say. It is quite possibly one of the most unique places you could ever stay.
If you ever wanted to have a backcountry wedding or reunion you will want to consider us. There is ample room for camping and Bon Fires!!
The Way Back Inn is not the kind of place that you use as a home base to further explore the greater region. It is best used as a place to sit and stay a while, be still, listen to the trees breath, where the wind blowing through them sounds just like the sea. to explore, to rediscover.
Think of this place as a back-country Cabin like the kind you hike or ski to. Like the kind of place you read about in a Jack London novel. A place where you can really get away.
Ute Indians once camped here. The original cabin was built for the foreman of the Longfellow mining district [a short hike to the west] and actually had a telegraph line running to it. The 80 acres was homesteaded in the 30's by "the Goat Lady". She raised goats and grew potatoes. The property then was aptly named Arrowhead ranch, for all the arrow heads found when plowing up the field. The Jasper that the Indians used to make their arrow heads comes out of the ground in the surrounding area! Supposedly before they first plowed there were 8 tipee rings in the meadow. One can still feel their presence.
We have woke up to 20 head of elk in the meadow, and deer at our window
Like one of the lines from a song I wrote of the place "where the air is clean, the spring is wet, and a view of the Sangre's as far as you can see". ----- Peace.

Why the Owner Chose Salida
We did'nt choose this place. It chose us!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin
To be and live off the grid is, empowering to say the least. So is being in a "defacto" wilderness area. Birds and wildlife abound and we can hike for hours in any direction without seeing a sign of human activity, just animal tracks and bird songs. But the best part is to simply relax, enjoy the view and listen. --- Oh yea. did I mention the night sky!!
Owner's Map of Salida
Here we are...Terri and Greg! We were married in a meadow on this property in June of 2000. Greg is a Retired Ski Bum and strawbale home builder. Terri is a homemade soap maker. Together we are the proprietors of wanderLust road. a funkgroovin mercantile offering ART, RE-CYCLED GOODS, and CONSIGNMENT. Located at 146 W. First Street in down town Salida. We enjoy all that Chaffee County has to offer including hiking, biking, skiing, ice skating, playing music with the locals and hanging out with friends. We have 3 grown boys, 2 of which are married and 5 grandchildren which are all lots of fun! We dream of saddling up our tandem bike and riding off into the sunset....one of these days!

BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO RELAX

We recently spent three days at the Way Back Inn, and had a wonderful visit. The strawbale log hybrid home is wonderfully efficient and cozy. The snowcapped mountain views and surrounding nature is unsurpassed in beauty for the area. Sitting outside at night by the firepit you are reminded that there are still places even as accessible as this home that one can find solitude. I would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for somewhere off the beaten path to relax, center yourself, and spend time with friends and family without any distractions. Oh yeah, the owners happen to make their own homemade soaps that are incredible.
Recommended for:Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children.
