This downtown Mahahual one bedroom loft is located on the new Oceanfront Malecon and on what might be Mexico's best beach. Above the Tropicante restaurant, a popular local eatery, a large balcony provides shade, privacy and a wonderful place for a hammock but is just a few feet from the Malecon and ocean front below. The loft was recently remodeled and is nicely decorated. The open air design allows the almost constant ocean breeze to flow easily through the unit, so that, combined with the ceiling fans, is comfortable year round without the need for air conditioning.

The downtown location is perfect for those wanting convenient shopping, restaurants, diving or fishing charters or ruins excursions. Located just a few steps from the bus station, guest who do not want to drive can bus in and walk to almost everything. Taxis are just a few dollars for short trips around town. The downtown beach is the cleanest in the area with merchants cleaning sea grass daily.

A reef runs parallel to the downtown beach about 200 yards off shore, protecting the downtown beach front from wave action. It is very rare when swimmers find anything but almost still waters on the downtown beach. That reef also provides surprisingly good “urban” snorkeling with tropical fish galore!

Mahahual is a fishing village that was converted into a cruise ship port in 2003. The downtown was recently destroyed by Hurricane Dean in 2007 and completely rebuilt to accommodate the cruise ship industry. The result is a new and very clean tourist venue unlike any other in Mexico. On ship days, the town comes alive late morning with the sounds of tropical music and the smells of local cuisine cooking in the many restaurants.

The streets fill with tourist and the downtown becomes a fun and festive place. By mid afternoon though, the tourist all leave and the town once again takes on more of a small fishing village ambiance. Guests can choose from many uncrowded restaurants and stroll the quiet malecon and ocean front. At night, the malecon is lighted and perfect for watching the moon rises over the ocean, either from your private balcony or a restaurant’s beachfront dining area.
