Luxury Beach House which directly backs up to Cape Henlopen State Park, several thousand acres of beach and forest full of natural and cultural history. Views extend over the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay, to Cape May, New Jersey, and beyond. Historic Lewes, Delaware's first town, is just down the road and is full of museums and other cultural interests, as well as quaint places to shop and eat; Rehoboth and Bethany Beach are nearby and offer even more. The Cape Henlopen - Cape May Ferry, noted for whale and seabird watching, is two minutes away.
Our home is a comfortable cape, simple but elegant, and fully furnished (whitewashed, cape cod style). The interior is light and airy, with walls of light blue and yellow and bead board; flooring is tile, wood (maple), and carpet. Map & Owner's Profile
Year Purchased: 1994
Why the Owner Chose Lewes
We wanted ocean and bay views, a home where we could walk or bike to the bay or ocean, and we wanted to be close to a quaint and historic town. We live in a beautiful area, where others appreciate the natural beauty and what it contributes to the health of this small community.
The Unique Benefits at this House
We enjoy hiking and biking in the Park and nearby. Our home is in a relatively new neighborhood (Cape Shores, established in the early 90s) complete with a private fishing pier, tennis courts, pool and clubhouse. Cape Henlopen State Park, our backyard, is several thousand acres of forest and beach popular with surfers and bathers and fishers alike. The Park touts a fishing pier, outdoor basketball courts, Frisbee golf course, bike trails, WWII lookout towers (which provide remarkable 360 degree views over the ocean and landscape), nature trails and an interactive nature center. We also bike to historic Lewes, Delaware's first town established in the 1600s, where we enjoy museums, restaurants (e.g. Lewes Bakery, King's Ice Cream), and quaint shops. The rail to trail (biking or hiking) from Lewes takes you through forests and along marshes to Rehoboth Beach where one can further explore, shop, and dine.
Owner's Map of Lewes
Although one of us grew up in the mountains and is partial to them, we both love the beach, just sitting on it, watching the dolphins and ospreys, admiring the long views out, listening to the waves. We enjoy biking on the many trails of the Park, those along the coast, but also through the marsh behind, one full of ancient oyster shells from Native Americans of many years ago. We also enjoy biking to historic Lewes (<10 min., to visit the quaint shops, museums, stores, and restaurants) and to Rehoboth Beach through a beautiful forest along the Rail to Trail.
