Newly built home nestled along the Hazel River just downstream from Shenandoah National Park (SNP). River and mountain views are remarkable in this private setting; the soothing sounds of the river sweep through the property. We swim and fish (native brook trout) and explore in and around the Hazel. Hiking and biking and fishing and horseback riding opportunities abound whether from our six acre property or along the Hazel into or near the Park; the trailhead for Old Rag Mountain (SNP), a dramatically beautiful and exposed peak, is about 10 minutes away. We enjoy historic Sperryville's quaint shops and restaurants featuring homemade and local foods. The world famous, five-star "Inn at Little Washington" is 10 minutes away. Charlottesville, an hour's drive located at the base of the Blue Ridge and home of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and the University of Virginia, is a cultural haven with a small-town feel. The culture and history of Washington, D.C. is 75 minutes away.
Our spacious and light-filled home is tucked into the riverside. Nearly all rooms of this functional house have views of the river, and the large decks and patio provide even fuller views up this pristine, native trout stream which gently cascades from Shenandoah National Park. Two fireplaces, a large, well-equipped kitchen, and a comfortable living room with immense windows and transoms help focus us on the river and the mountain panorama beyond. Children and guests especially enjoy the downstairs where two bedrooms and the playroom have full view of the river. A ping pong table, and flat screen HDTV (DVD) and board games complement the downstairs play area.

Map & Owner's Profile
Luxurious Home, on Hazel River, Shenandoah National Park
Year Purchased: 2006
Why the Owner Chose Sperryville
Growing up in Charlottesville, home of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and the University of Virginia, gave us an great appreciation of the beauty and lure of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Shenandoah National Park, 250,000 acres of wilderness and 4000 foot peaks and the Skyline Drive, was established in the 1930's and now provides refuge for Black Bears and other interesting wildlife. Neighboring the central section of the Park, Sperryville is a quaint community along the Thorton River and is one of just a few towns in a county with no fast food, box stores, or large commercial areas; progressive county zoning has protected the rural nature of this remarkable community.
The Unique Benefits at this House
We're able to relax and enjoy each other's company and the natural beauty of the area. The soothing sounds of the river invite us to read, relax, or explore. Biking and hiking trails in Shenandoah National Park and nearby invite us as well. We enjoy historic Sperryville (and Culpeper, 20 miles distant, and Warrenton, 25 miles) with its country store, fresh local produce, local coffee shop, and several very good restaurants featuring local produce and homemade foods. Charlottesville, 50 minutes to the south, offers culture and history in a small town setting. We also enjoy the Smithsonian and other museums and cultural sites in Washington, D.C., about 75 minutes away.
Owner's Map of Sperryville
One of us grew up nearby (Charlottesville, Greene County), at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and we both love the peacefulness of this area. The sounds of the river pervade and capture us as we fish or swim or sit along its shores. We love to hike and bike and horseback ride the many nearby trails in and around Shenandoah National Park.
