My husband and I came here for a week to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. As we entered the property, we were washed over with relaxation. The villa is exactly as it is pictured on this site, beautifully appointed and spotless. We were greeted with fresh fruit, local coffee and a six pack of cervesas provided by the owners, Barbara and Gunnar. If you are lucky enough to be there with them, they are wonderful and will enhance your stay. The villa sits on the ocean and you hear the waves crash day and night. There aren’t any city lights, so the evening sky is full of bright stars. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with colorful blooms throughout the property. The infinity pool looks over the ocean. It couldn’t be any better. It’s like your own private resort. Absolutely magnificent! The emramadas, beach restaurants, are just steps from the property. They serve the most delicious fresh fish dishes. At night, you can wonder into the small village for real homemade Mexican food. You can lie by the pool, swim in the ocean and go for walks on the beach. That’s a full day in Barro de Potosi. If you want a little adventure, we took a boat ride through the lagoon, which was great. We also went horseback riding with Arturo, a local guide, to a deserted beach, wow. If you are looking for a relaxing, off the tourist grid vacation, look no further.

When the taxi arrived at the large signature gates, I knew we had picked something special! What a tropical paradise, beautiful palms and flowering bushes attracting Hummingbirds surrounded the compound. Jose greeted us and took our luggage to our casita. It was immaculate and beautifully decorated. We didn't even unpack before we headed out to see the glorious view. We were stunned by the sun setting and the beauty of the ocean, so serene we immediately sat in chairs provided by the pool and took it all in. The next morning we got our coffee and went back to find the ocean and shore filled with activity. People were walking on the beach, many young men fishing, the beautiful Terns and Seagulls & Pelicans all diving for breakfast. With that in mind we went for our fresh squeezed orange juice and breakfast of rolls and fruit. What to do this first day, we decided a walk around on the beach was in order. The entrance to the beach is just past the pool. Later in the evening we walked to the small village and had an outstanding dinner of pork tacos. The restaurant was full of families enjoying the tasty tacos. It was such a nice environment we joined in. On another day we took a lagoon boat ride and being a birder it was an incredible experience. My husband likes to play golf and that was arranged for. We truly felt we were having the best vacation ever! Can't wait for next time and refer it to our friends and family.

I could keep this very short by saying we are going back. If you need to relax and get get away, this is the place for you. i was concerned about not having air conditioning but it was not an issue. At night we actually turned off the ceiling fan as it was too cool. We loved sleeping in an open air villa, under a mosquito net, listening to the sound of the ocean. The pictures really don't do the place justice, the gardens are beautiful and the villas unique and tastefully decorated. Steps away is the beach, hang a left, walk 5 minutes and choose from 20 open air seafood restaurants, turn right and walk 5 minutes and have an oceanfront one hour massage for $30, walk another 10 minutes and there is a boutique hotel if you desire a fancier meal and setting. At night, you can walk into the small village and have simple, rustic but a good meal cooked by the locals. You can take a 50 peso taxi ride to Chula Vida, which I highly recommend, Sushi night on Wednesday and music on Sundays. Gunnar recommended the wood grilled octopus and it was spot on. They have kayaks and bicycles for your use. You might want to brush up on your Spanish, this is not a resort area.

My wife and I had previously stayed at Villa Tamarindo (see our review below) in June 2012. We loved it so much we came back in March 2013 for 10 days. This time we brought our teenagers, 14 and 18. This trip we stayed in Casa Paz, the large house located in the center of the compound. The house is beautiful, and the pool is large and deep, just a few steps from the beach. It was somewhat of a gamble bringing the kids for 10 days, as we were not sure how they would get along in BDP for that length of time. As you probably already know from reading the other reviews, BDP is a very small village with limited night life, etc. Many visitors leave on-line reviews stating things like "BDP is a nice place to visit for a day, but I wouldnt want to stay there", etc. Based on this having been our second stay in less than 12 months, obviously we don't agree, but still had concerns on how the teenagers would adapt for 10 days. Our concerns were quickly eliminated shortly after arrival. The kids loved Casa Paz and BDP. They settled in to the relaxed mood of BDP as quickly as my wife and I. I think they truly enjoyed releasing from the pressures of their daily grind the same as us adults do. The kids enjoyed boogie boarding and swimming in the ocean (that never gets boring) walking the beach to the enramada restaurants, and walking the road into the village to purchase snacks and daily supplies at the several tiendas. We took several day trips by pick-up truck/bus into Zihuatenajo, and the kids were thrilled with that. We also walked the beach to the north to eat at several other more fancy restaurants up there, and then got rides back after dark in the back of the owners pickups. Having Wifi access for the Ipad didnt hurt either, but it was a relief to see that the interent clearly took last place in their pecking order for entertainment. Our kids have made about 4 trips to Mexico prior to this one, never at the large resorts, but always at more low key locations with more of the local feel (Isla Mujeres). They clearly preferred BDP to the other locations. I guess each family would need to decide for themselves how their particular kids will adapt to the low key environment, but ours did very well. In fac it was very nice to have them there with us as we got to spend a lot of time with them without other distractions. That is not easy to do with teenagers!

We spent ten wonderful days here swimming, relaxing, walking the often deserted beach and exploring the area surrounding the nearby village of Barra de Potosi. If you're looking for a lot of low-key relaxation, you'll find it here. (The shopping and nightlife are in Zihuatenejo, a half-hour by car up the coast.) We stayed in Villa Tamarindo, a beautifully built palapa-style structure snugged neatly into the landscape behind the main house. It was comfortably simple, with everything we needed -- and just a dozen or so steps from the infinity pool and not many more to the beach itself. Hosts Gunnar and Barbara were welcoming and, like their neighbors and several other expatriates we met in the area, very interesting people. Caretakers Tito and Carmen were always there when needed, and always gracious in a twinkle-in-the-eye sort of way. Barra de Potosi is a small Mexican village. You'll find a couple of small markets open during the day and maybe a couple of small restaurants open on any given night. Basic Spanish helps, but there's a web of community there that we found our way into in just a day or two. The local people are wonderfully friendly and generous with their attention and time. While there we enjoyed a boat ride/wildlife tutorial/throw-net fishing lesson on the Lagoon, a trip to the Refugio (animal refuge), a walk to the south to Playa de Tortuga (you won't even find footprints on that beach) and a couple of half-day trips to Zihuatenejo.

We rented the cassita Tamarindo in Sendas del Mar for one week in late March/early April 2013. The accommodations were beautiful - we loved the use of wood salvaged from fall-down in tropical forests - so interesting. The architects and owners put a lot of thought into the comfort and ambiance of the property. As gardeners, we were so intrigued with the various tropical plants on the property - they are beautiful and we don't get any of them in our Northern climes. The infinity pool is beautiful and the beach is one of the best we've ever seen. The owners take particular pride in their property and are active participants in the community, trying to help the people of this rather impoverished area gain some semblance of economic stability. Nearby is a wild life preserve, which is very interesting. Long walks on the beach were the highlight for us. The one downside is that the dining choices are extremely limited - there are seafood restaurants nearby, but the choices are all pretty much the same and there are small family establishments within walking distance, but we found them to be very limited - a few burritos, tamales and enchiladas. While for many people this would not be a problem, we would have been much happier with more sophisticated and varied choices.

My wife and I stayed at Sendas Del Mar for 4 days early June 2102. It was our first visit to Barra de Potosi. We absolutely loved this trip. Sendas del Mar is beautiful, and in June we had it to ourselves. The infinity-style pool and deck were awesome, with a great view of the beach and sunsets. We stayed in the Villa Tamarindo, which is exceptionally stunning, with an open air concept and timber-framed palapa roof. The open kitchen and lounging area was great for relaxing in those rare moments when we weren’t at the pool or beach. SDM is only a few minutes along the beach to the enramada restaurants on the beach, yet far enough away to still get the privacy and quiet you are looking for. These are feet-in-the-sand palapa style restaurants serving delicious and authentic mexican seafood right on the beach. Likewise, SDM is the same short distance along the road into "downtown" BDP where there are several small tiendas to purchase your refreshments, supplies for each day's breakfast, and other basic needs. The town is very quiet at night. The streets become the locals’ living rooms. There are a few small restaurants in town for eating dinner at night. Don’t miss these! These are very local in flavor and you are really immersing into the local's culture when you eat here - and that is a good thing! One night when we were sitting at one of the restaurants my wife brought a bunch of bouncy balls that lit up every time they bounced. After she gave the first one away word spread fast that she had them. For the next 20 minutes we sat there as the local kids shy’ly and very politely came up to us in small groups and asked if she had any more balls. Then we sat there and ate dinner watching these lit up balls bouncing down the dimly lit streets. The next night when we walked thru town we could still see those flickering balls bouncing in the streets! BDP is laid back and relaxed to the max. Time really slows down there, and in a very good way. What did we do to entertain ourselves? Nothing! BDP and SDM entertained us. We were never bored, and we weren’t doing anything! Other than swimming in the pool, swimming in the ocean (best swimming ever), shopping at the local markets each day for stuff to cook for breakfast, sitting at the pool enjoying cocktails, smoking good cigars, watching the locals, young and old, hand-line fishing in the surf, watching sunsets, and so on. I highly recommend Sendas del Mar and Barra de Potosi.

It was wonderful to watch the pelicans and the fishermen on the beach and the birds that came to the pond in front of our casita each morning. It's remarkable how beautiful and yet relatively undeveloped this community is. We rented both Tamarindo and Mandala for our family (my husband and I and our two teenagers.) It was perfect for us. The property and gardens, pool and casitas are gorgeous and although perhaps the closest to town on the beach, the property is also very secluded. It takes about two minutes to walk to the place that sells fresh tortillas but you feel like you are in your own private little paradise. As we walked the beach, I felt so happy to be in exactly the place we were in. Tito and Carmen, the caretakers, were very kind and helpful. We used the bicycles to ride up and down the beach road and to the little shop to buy sea salt. We kayaked in the lagoon and enjoyed the fish at the enramadas. The beach walking is great here and it's amazing how few people you run into. We had a great Italian meal at Franca's (we saw a sandwich board advertising Sunday meals by an italian chef.) It is about a fifteen minute walk down the beach. The ocean can be a little rough, but also a lot of fun. Everything was immaculately clean and well cared for. We loved that we were able to experience a different culture here--it is truly still a fishing village that is more tuned into nature than tourism. I recommend it very highly if that is what you are looking for.

This truly is a beachfront paradise. We could not improve on this cozy, beautiful place. Gunnar and Barbara, the owners, who are on the premises, go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. I would recommend Barra de Potosi to anyone who wants a laid back authentic experience. Some highlights for us were; walking on the beach, fishing right out the front door, meeting friends at the nearby restaurants, having fresh dinners cooked outdoors by local women, taking a lagoon tour, purchasing fresh fruit, vegetables and eggs right outside our gates from the twice a week delivery, reading lots of books, and in general feeling blessed to be able to experience this.

The kind folks who own this property are lucky they managed to get rid of us at all. Put simply, this place is paradise. From the meticulously-maintained grounds and beach-front location, to the pool, billiards table and charming villa, it has everything you could need or want. The local family that works the grounds is very friendly, and our hosts also exceeded our expectations in every way. The accommodation itself is spacious and open, with a full kitchen, lots of closet space and plenty of room to laze about. We particularly enjoyed the fact we got to sleep under a mosquito net instead of behind glass, with nothing but the crickets and the sound of the surf to lull us asleep at night. Location-wise the place is also perfect. Just steps away from the "main street" in Barra de Potosi, fresh seafood and cold cerveza are always close at hand. There are many enramadas or restaurants along the beach, and the town is right on the edge of what is apparently the largest lagoon in the whole country, so there's lots to explore. A nearby wildlife refuge is also worth the 50 peso cab ride. Keep in mind -- this isn't an all exclusive resort, this is real Mexico. If you're looking to party and hit the clubs, you might be happier in a bigger town. But if you are craving a more authentic experience, a place where you can turn the hourglass over and lose yourself for a while, this it it.

About the owner: We are a retired American couple dividing our time between this beach property and our home in San Miguel de Allende.

Why the Owner Chose Barra de Potosi:
We have seen most of the coast of Mexico; this is one of the last unspoiled stretches that has easy access to international airports and is near developed tourist areas with all their amenities.

The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Barra de Potosi is the epi-center of laid back. It is a quiet village where most of the men are fishermen, launching their pangas off the beach every day and hand lining snapper and pargo offshore. Nature is everywhere from the pelicans diving in the surf to the turtles nesting on the shore. If you want to get away, this is away.
