We spent ten wonderful days here swimming, relaxing, walking the often deserted beach and exploring the area surrounding the nearby village of Barra de Potosi. If you're looking for a lot of low-key relaxation, you'll find it here. (The shopping and nightlife are in Zihuatenejo, a half-hour by car up the coast.) We stayed in Villa Tamarindo, a beautifully built palapa-style structure snugged neatly into the landscape behind the main house. It was comfortably simple, with everything we needed -- and just a dozen or so steps from the infinity pool and not many more to the beach itself. Hosts Gunnar and Barbara were welcoming and, like their neighbors and several other expatriates we met in the area, very interesting people. Caretakers Tito and Carmen were always there when needed, and always gracious in a twinkle-in-the-eye sort of way. Barra de Potosi is a small Mexican village. You'll find a couple of small markets open during the day and maybe a couple of small restaurants open on any given night. Basic Spanish helps, but there's a web of community there that we found our way into in just a day or two. The local people are wonderfully friendly and generous with their attention and time. While there we enjoyed a boat ride/wildlife tutorial/throw-net fishing lesson on the Lagoon, a trip to the Refugio (animal refuge), a walk to the south to Playa de Tortuga (you won't even find footprints on that beach) and a couple of half-day trips to Zihuatenejo.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.

We rented the cassita Tamarindo in Sendas del Mar for one week in late March/early April 2013. The accommodations were beautiful - we loved the use of wood salvaged from fall-down in tropical forests - so interesting. The architects and owners put a lot of thought into the comfort and ambiance of the property. As gardeners, we were so intrigued with the various tropical plants on the property - they are beautiful and we don't get any of them in our Northern climes. The infinity pool is beautiful and the beach is one of the best we've ever seen. The owners take particular pride in their property and are active participants in the community, trying to help the people of this rather impoverished area gain some semblance of economic stability. Nearby is a wild life preserve, which is very interesting. Long walks on the beach were the highlight for us. The one downside is that the dining choices are extremely limited - there are seafood restaurants nearby, but the choices are all pretty much the same and there are small family establishments within walking distance, but we found them to be very limited - a few burritos, tamales and enchiladas. While for many people this would not be a problem, we would have been much happier with more sophisticated and varied choices.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My wife and I stayed at Sendas Del Mar for 4 days early June 2102. It was our first visit to Barra de Potosi. We absolutely loved this trip. Sendas del Mar is beautiful, and in June we had it to ourselves. The infinity-style pool and deck were awesome, with a great view of the beach and sunsets. We stayed in the Villa Tamarindo, which is exceptionally stunning, with an open air concept and timber-framed palapa roof. The open kitchen and lounging area was great for relaxing in those rare moments when we weren’t at the pool or beach. SDM is only a few minutes along the beach to the enramada restaurants on the beach, yet far enough away to still get the privacy and quiet you are looking for. These are feet-in-the-sand palapa style restaurants serving delicious and authentic mexican seafood right on the beach. Likewise, SDM is the same short distance along the road into "downtown" BDP where there are several small tiendas to purchase your refreshments, supplies for each day's breakfast, and other basic needs. The town is very quiet at night. The streets become the locals’ living rooms. There are a few small restaurants in town for eating dinner at night. Don’t miss these! These are very local in flavor and you are really immersing into the local's culture when you eat here - and that is a good thing! One night when we were sitting at one of the restaurants my wife brought a bunch of bouncy balls that lit up every time they bounced. After she gave the first one away word spread fast that she had them. For the next 20 minutes we sat there as the local kids shy’ly and very politely came up to us in small groups and asked if she had any more balls. Then we sat there and ate dinner watching these lit up balls bouncing down the dimly lit streets. The next night when we walked thru town we could still see those flickering balls bouncing in the streets! BDP is laid back and relaxed to the max. Time really slows down there, and in a very good way. What did we do to entertain ourselves? Nothing! BDP and SDM entertained us. We were never bored, and we weren’t doing anything! Other than swimming in the pool, swimming in the ocean (best swimming ever), shopping at the local markets each day for stuff to cook for breakfast, sitting at the pool enjoying cocktails, smoking good cigars, watching the locals, young and old, hand-line fishing in the surf, watching sunsets, and so on. I highly recommend Sendas del Mar and Barra de Potosi.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

It was wonderful to watch the pelicans and the fishermen on the beach and the birds that came to the pond in front of our casita each morning. It's remarkable how beautiful and yet relatively undeveloped this community is. We rented both Tamarindo and Mandala for our family (my husband and I and our two teenagers.) It was perfect for us. The property and gardens, pool and casitas are gorgeous and although perhaps the closest to town on the beach, the property is also very secluded. It takes about two minutes to walk to the place that sells fresh tortillas but you feel like you are in your own private little paradise. As we walked the beach, I felt so happy to be in exactly the place we were in. Tito and Carmen, the caretakers, were very kind and helpful. We used the bicycles to ride up and down the beach road and to the little shop to buy sea salt. We kayaked in the lagoon and enjoyed the fish at the enramadas. The beach walking is great here and it's amazing how few people you run into. We had a great Italian meal at Franca's (we saw a sandwich board advertising Sunday meals by an italian chef.) It is about a fifteen minute walk down the beach. The ocean can be a little rough, but also a lot of fun. Everything was immaculately clean and well cared for. We loved that we were able to experience a different culture here--it is truly still a fishing village that is more tuned into nature than tourism. I recommend it very highly if that is what you are looking for.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with teenagers, romantic getaway.

This truly is a beachfront paradise. We could not improve on this cozy, beautiful place. Gunnar and Barbara, the owners, who are on the premises, go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. I would recommend Barra de Potosi to anyone who wants a laid back authentic experience. Some highlights for us were; walking on the beach, fishing right out the front door, meeting friends at the nearby restaurants, having fresh dinners cooked outdoors by local women, taking a lagoon tour, purchasing fresh fruit, vegetables and eggs right outside our gates from the twice a week delivery, reading lots of books, and in general feeling blessed to be able to experience this.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

The kind folks who own this property are lucky they managed to get rid of us at all. Put simply, this place is paradise. From the meticulously-maintained grounds and beach-front location, to the pool, billiards table and charming villa, it has everything you could need or want. The local family that works the grounds is very friendly, and our hosts also exceeded our expectations in every way. The accommodation itself is spacious and open, with a full kitchen, lots of closet space and plenty of room to laze about. We particularly enjoyed the fact we got to sleep under a mosquito net instead of behind glass, with nothing but the crickets and the sound of the surf to lull us asleep at night. Location-wise the place is also perfect. Just steps away from the "main street" in Barra de Potosi, fresh seafood and cold cerveza are always close at hand. There are many enramadas or restaurants along the beach, and the town is right on the edge of what is apparently the largest lagoon in the whole country, so there's lots to explore. A nearby wildlife refuge is also worth the 50 peso cab ride. Keep in mind -- this isn't an all exclusive resort, this is real Mexico. If you're looking to party and hit the clubs, you might be happier in a bigger town. But if you are craving a more authentic experience, a place where you can turn the hourglass over and lose yourself for a while, this it it.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

There could not be a more perfect beach rental than Villa Tamarindo. Every detail of Tamarindo is exquisite -- roomy, open air, natural wood, beautiful tiles, gorgeous views and a kitchen to boot -- nothing was overlooked. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. The beach and ocean are easily accessible and the waves are more gentle and manageable than almost anywhere else on the entire playa. If you don't want to deal with the sand, the infinity pool is a perfect place to lounge or to view the sunset over the ocean while sipping a cool tropical drink. The small town of Barra de Potosi, with its beachside enremadas or nighttime taco stands is just steps away. A visit to El Refugio de Potosi to see the amazing animals of Mexico or a bird tour of the lagoon is worth a few hours of your time and, if you visit at the right time, you can even book a whale watch or trip to the bird sanctuaries of Los Moros. A week in paradise!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Where to start with this beautifully designed beachfront property? From the infinity pool, where the spectacular view pours over into the gentle waves of the bay to the authentically designed main beach house and casitas, this Mexican getaway has it all. Every detail of our casita, from the large bathroom (incredible shower) to the cozy bedroom, to the indoor/outdoor lounge overlooking the attractively landscaped grounds, was right on the mark. If you're into natural design with all the creature comforts, this is the place for you. My wife and I stayed for 10 glorious days and we would go back in a heartbeat. If you are looking for a place to just hang out and cool you heels then you'll find no better place than this little piece of paradise. You can lay in a hammock poolside, read you favorite novel stretched out in the shade of a palm tree or take a quiet afternoon siesta. As for the beach, there are probably only a few beaches along the Mexican coastline offering better swimming, sunset walks and warm gentle waves. The quiet little village, a 5 minute walk down the beach, offers wonderful opportunities to soak up the local flavor and taste some fresh seafood. If that is not enough action from you, believe it or not there is plenty to do if you chose to leave your secluded hideaway: kayaking in the nearby lagoon, surf fishing (caught a couple of 20 pounders right in front of the property!), an Ecological Sanctuary, and only a 25 minute drive to Ixtapa for shopping, and plenty of restaurants. Another feature of this property is that it is only a short taxi ride from an international airport, making it convenient for traveling from the southwest or west coast. Last thought, having traveled in Mexico for over thirty five years, staying here will go down as one our top places of all time. I can only recommend that you go there and find out for yourselves. You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Mandala Casita at Barra de PotosiWe are always looking for the perfect place to relax and be one with nature. Beaches ofthe world excite us. The Mandala casita at Barra de Potosi was appealing and so easy toget to. Only 15 minutes from the Ixtapa airport. Even better Mandala Casita lived up toits web site billing and more than met our expectations! We seek peace, serenity and solitude to download from our busy life and we found it.A tranquil setting on a beach with only a few footprints in the sand, just steps to thewaters edge tempting one to walk on the beach taking in the sights and smells of the sea.Pelicans put on a show diving for fish. The grounds were so inviting, the water lily pondmesmerizing. The infinity pool a perfect place to swim and play. We lounged in thehammock overlooking the beautiful beach and ocean. It was a million dollar view whichserved up gorgeous sunsets night after night. It was truly a beachfront paradise.Mandala Casita was immaculate, a very large great room with screened windows, luxurious king bed, comfy chairs as well as a table with 4 chairs. It is an efficient set upwith dishes, coffee pot and a mini-refrigerator. Daily maid service is unobtrusive. Thelarge shower was a delight. There is a big closet & personal safe. The gentle breezesblowing the lovely white curtains and the lights and fans thru out the casita created aromantic setting. Outside our door patio chairs nestled near the colorful flowers andwater lily pond with hummingbirds and butterfly's all over the place. Photo Opseverywhere, what memories we have. The pool table was a lot of fun the hub of activityafter sunset with your favorite drink on the big patio. It is so tranquil you would think you were far from civilization but in truth you are only afew short blocks to the village of Barra de Potosi. We walked to our favorite seafrontrestaurant and just couldn’t get enough of the tasty fresh fish and tacos of every kind.It was difficult to choose from the many activities available. We took an early morningboat tour around the lagoon and were awed by the number of birds checking us out. Didsome kayaking and fishing. El Refugio de Potosi, a new ecotourism attraction is a ‘mustsee’ for photo opts. Reptiles and a large group of colorful Iguanas the Macaws, Parrots,Chachalacas ‘turkey sized birds‘, all communicating at near ear splitting volume. We could go on and on about Mandala Casita at Barra de Potosi, but fDid you find this review helpful? Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: We are a retired American couple dividing our time between this beach property and our home in San Miguel de Allende.
Why the Owner Chose Barra de Potosi:
We have seen most of the coast of Mexico; this is one of the last unspoiled stretches that has easy access to international airports and is near developed tourist areas with all their amenities.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Barra de Potosi is the epi-center of laid back. It is a quiet village where most of the men are fishermen, launching their pangas off the beach every day and hand lining snapper and pargo offshore. Nature is everywhere from the pelicans diving in the surf to the turtles nesting on the shore. If you want to get away, this is away.
